questions for gerda

Originally from Wauwatosa, WI. Miller’s where it’s at. Recently I gotta say I have a thing for Pabst.

Heineken is terrible. Forget anti-hipster cred, PBR is just a better beer. And if it also costs less . . . Well, that’s a no-brainer.

When I first started drinking beer (all used to be disgusting, mind you), my favorite was heineken. Maybe it helped ease me into it, no clue. But, I don’t drink it anymore, and haven’t for years. Rather the darker ones IMO these days. Some lighter ones (Newcastle, red stripe). I’d take an ale any day.

In general if you’re drinking a beer that’s not German, you’re drinking piss.

Even in the US there are a lot of kick-ass beers now that the micro-brewery explosion has taken place. I still haven’t seen a decent beer listed in this thread.

I completely agree. Heineken? Miller? Newcastle is fine, I suppose; my mom likes it. How did a conversation about beer get this long before mentioning microbrews?
Central Waters (Amherst, WI) is the first thing I’ll reach for, and it’s been getting pretty good exposure in Wisconsin. New Belgium (Fort Collins, CO) is widely distributed enough that I’m surprised it hasn’t come up in this thread. Or how about New Glarus (New Glarus, WI), North Coast (Fort Bragg, CA), or Boulevard (Kansas City, MO). Or if you want to get fancy, Avery (Boulder, CO) makes a stout that puts American Guiness to shame (The Czar).
For shame people! Unless you’re still drinking from a plastic red cup at a house party, you should be drinking better beer. Now pardon me, I’m going to tighten my cravat, put on my smoking jacket, and have a pint of Peruvian Morning (bourbon barrel-aged coffee stout).

I am self-admitted white trash, so I drink anything. Even those gross High Gravity beers. No beer snob here.

Though, I admit I do miss Shiner Bock when I was in Houston…

I didn’t realize a “beer” discussion had started. I thought we were just discussing cheap beer.

I’m totally obsessed with beer. I drink it all the time and try as many different types and styles as I can. Then I write long-winded reviews about them and post them on PB4PB.

Icepick and I exchanged a few words on beer some time back, but no one seemed to care.

Oh, and Belgium kicks Germany’s ass, in my opinion, when it comes to making top-notch beer, but there are some great brewers/beers in almost every country. You just gotta seek 'em out.

Right on.

Sorry I missed the last beer discussion; it was buried in the Smokers’ thread.
If this is only a conversation about cheap beer, then I’ll support PBR. It doesn’t taste completely terrible. Or maybe Blatz. Worst beer I’ve ever had was Black Label; it’s hard to find, and it tastes like tainted water.

This is distributed through Fresh and Easy markets for about $6.00 a 12 pack.

It’s really bad.

this just made my day.
though not necessarily agreeing with it. [laugh]

This thread just started to kick ass again.

I love beer. All kinds. I’ll drink anything that’s not PBR, any and all variants of Miller, Steel Reserve or (for some reason) regular Budweiser. All of those turn to piss and arsenic in my stomach and leave me less than okay.

I like my beer like I like my broads: short, pale, and cute… or tall, dark and nasty.

Question for Gerda! What’s Paul’s poison? This is important.

I like my beer like I like my women - cold and bitter

I like my beer like I like my women - cold and bitter

I had this one on Saturday. One of my favorite IPA’s thus far (Great Divide’s Titan IPA) . . .

Another really good one for the cold and bitter lover is this . . .

I’ll drink any old beer/ale/lager to be honest…but my two faves are…

OK, this thread took a dramatic turn for the better. All the drama gets tiresome.

I’m partial to Belgian Abbey style. I absolutely adore Chimay, in particular Grande Reserve (Blue), Premiere (Red). One day, I shall make a pilgramage to the Scourmont Abbey and drink beer that has been touched by God right from the source. If your gonna get you some Chimay, make sure you get the big bottle with the cork, not the small capped bottles.

Another great brewery is Unibroue out of Quebec. These guys can do no wrong.

If anyone is here in Detroit, I’ll take you to Dragonmead http://www.dragonmead.com/Beers.html. These guys are sublime brewers. 1st couple rounds on me. It’s that good.

Sounds like a plan, Bro! I’ll definitely hit you up if I ever end up in Detroit. I’ve not ever tried anything from Dragonmead (not sure if they distribute to West Coast – I’ll look into it), but they’ve got some tasty sounding offerings.

I LOVE Belgian beers. A few top choices being Delirium Tremens, Duvel, and Piraat. My all time favorite, though, is St. Bernardus Abt. 12 (a killer Quad).

And Unibroue is a superb brewery. Aside from their “Blanche de Chambly” (just okay) and their “Ephemere” (good, but not amazing), I’ve been ecstatic about everything I’ve tried (Maudite, La Fin Du Monde, Trois Pistoles).

I agree with you about the big corkers versus the small bottles too. It’s always better with the cork.

Only german beer I might have ever had was warsteiner. Which was very, very good. Had another one, but judging by the box, it might have been swiss (Kunig Ludwig, I think?).

I’m used to the high ABV’s. I drink a lot of the 10+ brews and rarely even buy anything under 7%. Here’s one I drank a couple weeks ago . . . . 18.2%!!! I thought it was going to be just gimicky and gross, but it was actually amazing.

Brewdog’s “Tokio”. An Imperial Stout that tastes to me like it was lovingly molested by a Belgian Quad. It’s incredible.

Erdinger. I always find it abroad, but rarely ever in the states. But being in college it’s mostly PBR, Rainer, Icehouse, etc. Everyone here’s bitching about Pabst and such… just think of Busch and Keystone Light.

Erdinger is good. If there’s a Whole Foods Market up your way you should be able to get it there.
