In dire need of a new tv. I’m thinking Plasma, because it offers deep blacks and really ideal for me since I’ll be using it mostly for movies and gaming.
I know LED uses less power, so that will save me $$ when the electric bill comes, they’re also lighter… but when it comes down to it I think plasma offers better picture quality. What do you prongers think? What’s your hardware LED or Plasma?
I saw the sexiest TV last week when I was in Bahrain. It was a big Samsung (about 52") and the whole thing was less than 1" thick and the picture went all the way to the edge of it (no thick border around the image area). It was so badass. I’m pretty sure it was LED. The blacks were quite black, but I didn’t really stare too close at it. The picture was amazing, but I was mostly impressed with how badass the whole TV looked.
I thought it was going to be like $5000 or something, but it was, I think, maybe $1,500.00 or so.
LED for sure…
There isn’t much difference between the darkerblacks between lcd and plasma anymore.
If you’re gonna go for plasma make sure you check your elevation because I’ve read after a certain heighth above sea level the plasma screens tend to hiss because the air pressure is condensing the gas or something along those lines… I thing the led is far superior to the plasma and the lcd, though

I have a Panasonic plasma HDTV and pretty much swear by it. LED-LCDs have made some good progress in even lighting and picture quality, and yes–plasma screens are heavy, but I think the benefits outweigh the disadvantages:
I’ve not seen a decently priced LED-LCD match the contrast levels of a similarly priced plasma
LCDs run natively at 60 hz, so you have to put up with judder , particularly with film-based video running at 24 frames per second. The new 120/240 hz functions create the annoying “soap opera effect” on 24 fps material. Plasmas, on the other hand, run 600 hz so it can natively run 30 fps (NTSC), 24 fps (film) and 60 fps (consoles, etc.) and not need to do stuff like 3:2 pulldown.
For what it’s worth, Amazon is busy clearing out their inventories for the new 2012 models, and you can’t sneeze without hitting a sweet deal.
I refuse to upgrade until my old tvs die, but the next one has to be greater than 60 Hz and at 1080p vs 720.
I’m not sure if advances in screen burn have been made recently, but I do know someone who left their plasma on and a certain station’s ever present logo burned itself in the lower right-hand corner.
I’ve noticed stores carry more LED’s than plasmas, weird cause I swear plasmas have better picture and viewing angles. and plasmas are ideal for night viewing, less glare. Not sure if LED suffer from bad glare? IDK I’m still thinking plasma. I’ve been eyeing this Panasonic Viera 42’ pretty kickass.
I’ll go against the grain here and say plasma.
LED is far better than ordinarily-lighted LCD but it produces highly inaccurate colors compared to plasma. They might look nice but they are inaccurate: too bright and the contrast is exaggerated. Plasma is definitely still the way to go if you want the best video quality.
