Yeah! Rasputin! Waaaaayyy back in the day when I lived in Davis, I’d occasionally get to stowaway with one of my homies one a Berkeley/San Francisco run and we’d hit Rasputin and Aaron’s. Great stores.
Terrible. RoboCop was just fine as is.
To Grumpy: While I WISH you would be right about that suit maybe just being a normal cop suit, I’m certain it ain’t.
I bet with that gay ass suit he doesn’t even move like a robot or make cool mechanical robot sounds when he moves.
He looks like a motherfucking power ranger.
Terrible. RoboCop was just fine as is.
Yes. In fact they should bring back RoboCop in 3D or something like they seem to be doing alot lately.
You guys were right. Batman reject.
Ouch!
How long before Michael Bay “re-imagines” The Godfather…with a sultry looking Zac Efron as the “new” Pacino!!!
[shocked]
The original x-rated cut of Robocop was trimmed mostly due to the painful death of Robo when he was human by Boddiker’s goons. Lot of cuts. I saw the Criterion version, it’s a good edit but I’m sure there’s a better looking DVD these days.
Thank you all for the insight on the director’s cut stuff. If I see something for cheap I’ll pick it up, but I’ll refrain from spending $50 for an extra 12 seconds of kneecap shooting.

Okay, let’s start talking about ROBOCOP again.
I’m slightly more optimistic, but more confused after seeing the new trailer.
There’s some shots of him looking like a proper Robocop with an adequate Robocop suit . . . . but there’s also suggestion that it was the prototype version and they update him to the stupid black scuba suit.
At least knowing that for PART of the movie I will have a decent-looking Robocop on screen is enough to make me see it. I’m going in cautious and skeptical, but I’m at least hopeful again.
I’m gonna hit this one opening night with the full-blown IMAX muckity muck and what not.
Come on, Kids! This is ROBOCOP, Dammi!!!
Okay, I just had a thought (trying to wrestle why they show the black suit and then a bunch of scenes with him back as the silver one) . . . . I would LOVE (yeah, this is how I would write it) if in the movie the corporate fat cats are like, “No, he’s gotta look hip and modern” and they give him that dumb black suit. Then Murphy is like, “F**K THIS!!!” and goes back to the shop with his homegirl who helps him get his proper rig fitted back on . . . . then he goes back to kickin’ some ass in a majorly righteous manner.
I also like the hinting at the “human factor” as the overriding power in Robocop. This is a topic that Rustyhacksaw has properly brought up in our Terminator/Robocop discussion recently and is an important theme which could add some additional depth if explored properly.
Anyway . . . let’s talk Robocop, y’all!!!
Love the first one. Kinda looks like Iron Man with a shit more of drama.

Yeah, I got that vibe too, unfortunately. I’m trying to put that aside though and kind of dismiss it (for the time being) as just the generic way Hollywood edits their generic trailers.

Meh. Fails to ignite any interest from me at all.
Anyway . . . let’s talk Robocop, y’all!!!
OK, but only if we get to talk Tarkovsky afterwards.
I’m slightly more optimistic too!! After seeing that trailer. Those last few closing seconds where his robotic gun holster pops open Ooooooooooo you know some real shit is about to go down. I jizzed a little. But I mean, I hope its good, I doubt it will be better than the original though it was flawless.
ok… so…
well, it looks like this movie is going to play up the cgi and the ‘digital impossibilities’ of our post-Avatar world… so, im bummed about that.
now, with Gary Oldman (who used to be an actor i respected, but now is clearly willing to work for a blowjob and a sandwich) Samuel L Jackson (as big a whore as you can find in hollywood) that guy who played freddy in the nightmare remake (and was in the viciously bad watchmen film) and michael keaton (who i thought was dead) i can safely say that this film will not wow me on the acting scale… im afraid. which is a shame, because in the original (even through the 80s camp elements) the actors all pushed and formed their archetypal characters SO brilliantly. the slimy executive is PERFECT, the corrupt ceo is EVIL, the heartless gang of capitalist[profiteering corporatist thugs are demented and fattened with Claigula-esque depravity and excess, and the good guys are believably solid. through all the silliness of the original, true skill and a WHOLE lot of rich and savory satire are presented.
this one looks like iron man 4. our villains get more screen time than Robo himself. also, a carbomb is what brings us the body?
the suit itself is really unfortunate, especially seeing as the original is so iconic, but at least they kept the suit SORT of similar…
now, this on top of the fact that it is HEAVILY rumored that the film will be a PG-13 flick, plus the footage from the trailer leads me to believe that it will NOT be the brutal portrait that the original one was (or even the two goofier sequels) but instead be another Transformers/Iron Man/Captain America/Insert Name of over-hyped comic or video game film/Thor/Hulk/Action-a-palooza that focuses not on the horrible toll of violence, but on the awesome destruction of big bangs and loud crashes.
the original film utilized hyper-violence and inhuman cruelty to illustrate its points. giving us a film that (like the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre) was uncomfortable, and PAINFUL from the moment it begins to the moment it ends. this film doesnt look like it will do that. it just has some cgi fire.
and as far as the human element, good call Gunney, the humanity of Robocop is what propels him to be more than the ED 209, so i can only hope that this film deals witht hat tactfully and with finesse, like Blade Runner did, or you know… the ORIGINAL ROBOCOP. but from the way it is brandished in the trailer, i fear that we may be in for a hand-holding lesson from the studio, which… is… not… great.
watching this trailer made me really want to sit down and watch Dredd again. now THAT was a new movie that ‘got it’ as far as satirical views of fascism and humanity.
I feel like I need to just let everyone know that I’m not even entertaining the topics of “measuring up” or being “better than the original”. That will never happen. It’s impossible.
I’m merely weighing this movie on the basis that it’s another Robocop movie (which I will attempt to remove emotionally from the original).
It’s not “rumored”. . .this will be a PG-13 film.
No balls + no satire = don’t bother
that guy who played freddy in the nightmare remake (and was in the viciously bad watchmen film)
Well, to be fair, Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach was easily the best thing about the “Watchmen” movie…

while that may be true, the film was awful and really missed the mark of the comic by a few thousand miles.
i actually have a pretty strong dislike for Jackie Earle Haley because of these three films. i feel like this guy keeps being in hideously cruel mutilations of art that i have loved. so its at the point now that when i see his name in the credit list for a movie, i figure it isnt worth sitting through. he may well be a gifted actor, but he keeps picking the worst possible roles. what he did to Freddy is atrocious.
I’ve haven’t seen the Nightmare on Elm Street remake, but Watchmen was… well, it sure looked nice, but the writing left a lot to be desired and Malin Akerman was probably not the best choice for Laurie.
