You have just been invited to the house party of the year (or something along those lines…) and you rock on up only to find that the dj has called in sick.
You put yr hand up and say “'ll do it…you bastards”.
What ten albums do you play?
In terms of ‘party’ music, I would choose…
The Cramps - Songs The Lord Taught Us
Beastie Boys - Paul’s Boutique
Panda Bear - Person Pitch
Underworld - Second Toughest In The Infants
Adrian Sherwood - Becoming A Cliche
Killing Joke - Pandemonium
Aphex Twin - 26 Mixes For Cash
Prince - Controversy
Herbie Hancock - Headhunters
The Smiths - Meat Is Murder*
Assume that it’s a ‘neighbourhood’ party and there are people representing all sorts of genres there. (ie it’s not just a bunch of yr mates who all like similar bands). So I’ve picked a mix that’s a little bit punky, a little bit heavy, a little bit dancey and a little bit dubby.
*this may seem like a weird inclusion, but I find this album to be rather ‘get up and shuffle yer feet’ -sy. Even though the lyrics are dour and depressing.
Not all of this stuff I’m necessarily a ‘fan’ of, but I would play nonetheless -
DJ Shadow - Entroducing
U.N.K.L.E - War Stories
The Stooges - Funhouse
Scorn - Refuse Start Fires
Jarboe - 13 Masks
Boris - Smile
Bad Brains - I Against I
Genius / GZA - Liquid Swords
The Stone Roses - The Second Coming
Peter Tosh - Legalise It
Here’s a list of college party friendly music that I’ve mixed with over the past few months.
Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours
PNAU - Embrace in particular
Justice - Cross
DVAS - Society
Skrillex - “Fucking Die 1” is worth checking out
OutKast - A group I’ve been meaning to get into
Miami Horror - The remixes for Illumination
Empire of the Sun - Remixxxes
Daft Punk - All the hits mix in great with Cut Copy
m83 - Dubstep Remixxxes
When I DJ, I throw aside my personal taste in music, but bands like DVAS and Miami Horror are amazing me right now.
Swans - White Light From The Mouth Of Infinity
Sunn O))) - Black One
Diamada Galas - Plague Mass
Current 93 - The Great In The Small
Whitehouse - Psychopathia Sexualis
The Cure - Disintegration
Bleak - Vane
Acid Bath - When The Kite String Pops
Mortiis - Født til å Herske
Various artists - New Years Trance Dance Party 2011
I only play 7"s, 10"s & 12"s at a house party[cool]
But if I was to play albums my party records would be…
Monks “Black Monk Time”
Schoolly D “Saturday Night”
Rezillos “Can’t Stand The Rezillos”
Scientist Meets The Space Invaders
Cramps “Off The Bone”
Marley Marl “In Control”
Freestyle Fellowship “Innercity Griots”
AC/DC “Let There Be Rock”
Kool G Rap & DJ Polo “Road To Riches”
Underground Resistance “Interstella Fugutives”
I dunno guys, I love a lot of the music you’re mentioning, but do you really wanna hear things like “Bleak - Vane” or Jarboe in a party enviornment? (I love both by the way, just not sure about how I’d feel about them at a party)
Anyways here’s a few I think might work

Boards of Canada - Music has the right to children
Coil - Love’s Secret Domain
Tobacco - Fucked up friends
Sonic Youth - Goo
The Slits - Revenge of the killer slits
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless

Whenever we have a house party I have it all worked out which awesome “rock the house” type of records I’m going to play…but as the night moves on and the drink gets consumed and tons of records come flying out the tunes tend to get more and more rediculous.
By the end of the night though it’s ALWAYS a marathon of Dub Reggae or ancient Hip Hop at this house.
House parties rule and old skool Hip Hop seems to be what people love the most round here.
I’ve been listening to a ridiculous amount of dub lately - especially Bill Laswell related projects.
That guy’s welcome in my house any time.
Great house party music too.
Good call. Laswell is a true master. Check out his Imaginary Cuba, Tabla Beat Science and Trojan Massive series if you haven’t yet heard them…they’re AWESOME!!! By the way…on youtube there’s a pretty awesome Dutch documentary on Bill Laswell…the narration is Dutch but the majority of it (interviews etc) is in English…check it out… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIKnf6siCGc

Oh by the way…I’m sure you’ve heard Rhythm & Sound/Basic Channel at some point through the years Amlux…but if not…Rhythm & Sound from Berlin are legendary when it comes to Dub over the last 20yrs. Their stuff is pure class and absolutely sublime… http://www.myspace.com/rhythmsoundmusic/music
