Im probably gonna get flamed for saying this considering we got some pretty big Godflesh fans here but, Ministry’s Land Of Rape And Honey completly prison rapes anything Godflesh has ever done. Dont get me wrong i like Godflesh to, im just saying, no contest.
I don’t know Pure and Streetcleaner come awfully close.
I’d rate LORAH over Streetcleaner. And let’s go with the original record releases. Both had bonus trax that didn’t belong on there. Well Hizbollah was ok but I prefer is one of the worst Ministry songs ever. As for Godflesh the 4 bonus trax that originally made up the Tiny Tears EP really throw the album off balance, although I have to admit I like Wound a lot. Side 1 of both albums are fucking phenomenal. I’ll even give my honest opinion track by track.
Like Rats=Stigmata
Christbait Rising>>>The Missing
Deity>>>Pulp
Golden Dawn=Dream Long Dead
Destruction=Head Dirt
So side 1 of both is about equal imo. But side 2 of LORAH kicks the shit out of side 2 of Streetcleaner. In fact here’s my opinion of side 2 of both albums.
LORAH>>>Devastator/Mighty Trust Krusher
You Know What You Are>>>Life Is Easy
Flashback=Streetcleaner
Locust Furnace>Abortive
Ok imo Streetcleaner has a better ending but the fact that the song LORAH kicks the shit out of 2 songs automatically makes side 2 of LORAH better. I don’t remember Pure all the way thru but I wouldn’t compare it to anything Ministry ever did.
Taking each band in a broad perspective, looking at their whole catalogue so far, I’d go with Swans. They had no stinkers unlike Ministry (but not unlike Godflesh). Godflesh, as big a beast as they are, owe much to Swans. Swans have had discernibly different phases (at least four) and have been excellent through all of them. Godflesh didn’t achieve as much diversity (but in saying that with stuff like Messiah maybe you don’t need to try something else to prove your greatness). And Ministry’s LORAH and Filth Pig are of the best (I’d say in top 5 of all three bands put together)
I don’t particularly like Godflesh or Swans, but I’d rather listen to either of them than anything put out over the last 6 years from RAMCO or Erie Load Presents The Human Mixxxipede Volume 666, or any such garbage.
Hey Gunnar, that story of you trolling the ppl on avalanchers was fucking priceless. The one about ur experience with Streetcleaner.
HAHAHA!!! That was a fun ride. Did you see any of the posts at the time or just heard about it after the fact? They got so emo it was just amazing.
I’ve never seen people get so hurt that someone didn’t like their precious band of choice. And for everyone that thought the Piss Army was overrun by buttkissers . . . that was amateur hour compared to the sucking up that the goons on Avalanchers would do to Justin Broaderick or any other band members.
It was a relatively short run, but IronsAtTheDisco! went out in a blaze of glory. My only regret is that they have the board set up in such a way that once you get banned you are blocked from even viewing the board from any device that you’d logged into from, so I wasn’t able to monitor the fallout after my departure (except for once or twice when I logged in from a library or a Kinko’s).
when i saw godflesh last month my girlfriend thought they were a bit shit cos the drums ‘sounded… shit’. ‘but that’s how they’re supposed to sound’, i said. didn’t help her much pointing that out. she preferred goatsnake since ‘they had real drums’. meh, women.
Just wanted to add my two cents to the topic, although comparing bands, or music in general is like comparing apples to oranges. One persons perfect idea of a sound is completely subjective, of course there are the exceptions, insert —> Miles Davis [cool]. I have always been a Ministry fan before Godflesh and like Gunnar mentioned everything after Animositisomina kind of killed it for me. Once I started really getting into Godflesh the only distinction I could make was that Justin takes his Low End seriously and keeps experimenting with different genres and sounds, which I have a huge respect for. Where Ministry were kind of always more aligned with a strict formula and had a more silver metallic color to the music. Filth Pig and Darkside were awesome albums in my opnion and it seems like Paul had more input and I enjoyed it because he took Ministry in a more slow baritone direction. Once Paul left Ministry, he also took the low end frequencies with him because Ministry even sounded more generic and trebly for me in the aftermath. While Justin keeps diggin and mashing shit up. I will say that regarding composition and arrangement Ministry has always had more depth than Godflesh, but then again Godflesh wasnt about being showy but instead pulverizing your skull to awaken you. There I go comparing apples to oranges, fuck it where is my Miles Davis …gonna go listen to the original “So What” …laterz
Swans, Godflesh, and Ministry all serve different musical purposes for me.
That said, I don’t think there’s ever been a band as relentlessly intense as Swans, particularly in their early years. I also like that where other bands toy with angst gothic melodrama, Swans just dives headfirst into nihilistic self-loathing. And it’s fucking scary.
It’s strange, I hadn’t listened to Godflesh (or Ministry) in years…a week or two ago, my friend hijacked my ipod in my car and played a Jesu song. I was like “shit, I haven’t heard this in years!” …and forgot how much I liked it! so since then, I’ve been on a huge Justin Broadrick kick, downloading all the albums I’ve missed the past few years, as well as some of his side projects from the 90’s I never was able to check out.
Man, the Sidewinder project with Kevin Martin is AWESOME…wish I checked this out years ago.
anyway back on topic. it’s really hard,and pointless to compare music. people say LORAH and Streetcleaner may be the bands’ best work, but those are two completely different albums. I still think Streetcleaner is better,but I also keep in mind that Justin was about 19 when he did it, pretty f’in amazing if you ask me.
The difference between Justin and Al (there’s lots of differences actually) is that Justin knew when to cut it off with Godflesh. for the majority of Godflesh’s stint, it was usually two band members. When Green left,Justin knew it couldn’t go on.
Would it have been cool to see a more mature Ministry after Paul left, but not called Ministry (i.e. Jesu being an evolution of Godflesh) ? I’m not sure it could have happened. Because to me, that’s where the talent stops for Al. Al simply isn’t as diverse as Justin (for instance, you’ll never see Al do ambient,or drumnbass, or hip hop) ,doesn’t have the ear for production like he does, etc. Not that there’s anything wrong with that,there’s an audience there who specifically likes the output and type of music that Al puts out,just as there’s an audience for Justin’s material too. For instance, I love Final (his ambient project) more than Godflesh and Jesu. I think the “Re-Entry” album from Techno Album is one of the best albums ever,and it’s a far cry from anything that sounds like Godflesh.
I also recommend the Blood of Heroes album that came out, it’s a collab Justin did with Bill Laswell and some others and sounds AMAZING.

Nah you told me about it once when I asked why you hate Godflesh so much. I can understand the hatred after Streetcleaner. But I wouldn’t call everyone on avalanchers a kissass. Most of them talked shit about Justin’s side project Pale Sketcher when it first came out. Mostly for the fact that he used a vocoder on one of the songs. They also totally shit on the last Godflesh album. But half of them also have a boner for the album Selfless which was a total letdown for me. Definatly safe to say I like this board better bc we don’t like everything Al has been a part of. I think we’re about as gay for Paul as avalanchers are for Justin though.
