Olympics Hockey

Anyone see the Canada vs. Switzerland game today which ended in a shootout to Canada’s favor? Great game.

No, I missed that one dog-gone-it! Saw some highlights and it looked like a great game!

I’m so looking forward to Men’s U.S. vs Canada on the 21st, I hear the competition is extremely fierce.

no I had it spoiled by the highlights. (the Canada game)
The game I want to see in its entirety is that female USA vs Russia game where the USA women won 13-0!!
Probably watches like your looking at pregame warm ups!
catching the rerun of mens hockey Russia vs Slovakia right now. pretty good so far. Slovakia just tied it up.

I cannot wait for US vs. Canada. I really can’t. Will remind me of Finland vs. Sweden that we saw last time.

I thought Canada Vs USA was tonight but the wife set me straight. Kind glad too cause we were out and would’ve missed it.
One thing I’m kinda disappointed in so far is that there is no intensity, this is the Olympics and it doesn’t even feel like play off games… it seems more relaxed like the all star game or something. Maybe US Vs Canada will be different.
Ah poor Brizgolov got beat in round 5 of the shootout! Man I wish the Ducks would’ve held onto that guy!

I thought it was just me in regards to noticing the lack of intensity in Olympics hockey. I’ve been watching this ever since I was a young lad and yes, I completely agree, it isn’t what it used to be. They seem like mid-season NHL games to be honest. However, they were playing in the NHL a week ago so maybe we should give it a bit more time.

I’m sure Sunday’s game will feel more competitive.

I’m sure Sunday’s game will feel more competitive.

Perhaps when we start getting to the medal rounds things will pick up(courtesy the wife’s speculation)

I agree, the intensity isnt there anymore. With that said, Olympic Hockey is still the most underrated event in all of sports.
And it still has a lot of meaning to the players. The upcoming Collective Bargaining agreement in the NHL will be intersting. The players love the Olympics and want to continue the current format, whereas the owners don’t like their greatest investments risking injury in non NHL game.

The NHLPA has said they would walk away if the olympic participation doesn’t continue.

That shootout game scared the crap out of me. Didn’t think we’d make it. However, the USA vs. Canada game will indeed be the one to watch (as it always is). Women’s hockey is a bit less interesting with Canada always winning 10 (or more) to 0.

Well so far USA Vs. Canada feels like a Playoff game and not disappointing! 4 minutes left in the first!

Yep, this is what I was talking about. That Olympics punch is back - it’s very present in this game. Great, great game. As well Finland vs. Sweden at midnight Eastern.

WTF?
Why did the refs stop play when the 3 Canadians ran into each other? THat’s bull nobody was bleeding… took away US’s advantage!
No matter US by 1 again just now!

That was the best hockey game I’ve seen in a long time. I hope this isn’t the peak or the olympics or the US team.

USA! USA! USA!

That was the best hockey game I’ve seen in a long time. I hope this isn’t the peak or the olympics or the US team.

oh yeah I was wondering the same thing. I hope the USA team didn’t spend all of their nickels in the prelims!!

BTW sad day today for me in the world of hockey:
I adore Scott Niedermayer, that guy was one of the main reasons I started following the Devils. ( and I was stoked when he went to the Ducks because now I could watch the guy play quite a bit instead of just waiting for the Devils to come to town) The guy made himself out to be the such a great sportsman, avoiding hits on people if it wasn’t necessary, skating with finesse, being a diplomat, avoiding fights, just being a gentleman and an athlete. But what does he do today at the end of the 2nd? he slams Jack Johnson up against the boards after the horn blew and Johnson didn’t even take a late shot on Brodeur!!! Then he skated away like he was completely oblivious to the whole thing

WTF was that all about? Scott has never really been one to take his aggravation out on players but here he was doing just that! Has Niedermayer always been dirty like that and he’s just super sneaky about it?

In the 10+ years I’ve been watching hockey I’d think I would’ve noticed before he was like that. Have I just been blind this whole time?

Maybe in the Olympics nationalism comes into play and players become extra emotional? Everyone is allowed to be an asshole every once in a while, and it’s obvious he’s not a full time asshole, so maybe I’d give him the benefit of the doubt here.

Not to defend him or anything, but there is an absurd amount of pressure on the Canadian players by the Canadian media (who can be very harsh on their players) as well as the fans. It gets to the players I am sure into high emotions. It happens. But no, he’s not a dirty player like that but seems like he may be learning a bit from Pronger.

he may be learning a bit from Pronger.

he he! Pronger is pretty dirty. It seems every team has one, along with the token Bully as well.
Yeah, I guess it could’ve been the pressure, (although not buckling made him great) wonder what the story is behind it though… like it’s hold over grudge from the league, like jack was talking shit about scott’s mom and this was the first time he had to defend her honor or if it’s something that’ll just get forgotten.

I thought it was cool that Langenbruener (former team mate of Scotts) Came too Johnson’s aid and threw a punch at his old team mate! Patriotism at its finest!

I knew Hockey was big in Canada but I didn’t know the media and Fans got down on them for losing… I thought Canadians were Jolly all of the time!
Thanks for the info fellas.

I’m kind of annoyed folks here in the U.S. aren’t really giving this that much attention, it’s the first time we’ve beat the Canadians in the Olympics in 50 yrs fer gods sake! I mean NBC didn’t even bother to put it on their flagship channel, they put in instead on MSNBC! At least the Chicago news media gave this story some decent coverage, but that was only because there were 3 Blackhawks playing on the U.S. and Canadian teams.

Oh well, I guess hockey will always be the redheaded stepchild of professional sports here in America. [crazy]

As far as Nieds blasting Jack Johnson - it’s part of the game. Should he have done it? Nope. Life goes on.

Yeah but it’s a part of the game that Niedermayer never used to be involved with. That is what really made me admire him. I wished all athletes could play like that, no matter what sport… Cal Ripken, in baseball, for instance. Don’t know why it’s bugging me so much, it’s just a stupid sport and guy I don’t personally know. I have no personal stake in how Niedermayer acts… Oh well.
