I didn’t think much of Devil In My Details…however Welt and Sunnysyop are two of my all time favourite albums. Will be picking this one up asap.
And fingers crossed there’s a new Skinny Puppy out this year. I am one of the few that loved Mythmaker. In fact…Mythmaker, The Process and Greater Wrong are my 3 fave Puppy albums.

Yeah sounds like it has potential, I especially like the 101 samples, sounds kinda like Bites era Puppy.
Funny though I pretty much feel the polar opposite about the albums you mentioned. Even though I liked WELT when it was released, I felt that DIMD was where he really came into his own as a solo artist. I thought DIMD made WELT and Sunny sound like amateurish bubble-gum pop by comparison. In fact, I like DIMD better than anything Puppy has put out since Process.
I really think Puppy should have stayed buried, I mean if Ogre and Key want to do a project together, that’s fine but call it “The Two Kevins” or something, just don’t call it Skinny Puppy, Puppy died with Dwayne, IMHO.
I’m afraid if I don’t like Puppy’s latest offering I’ll probably put them in my mental “ignore” list like I did w/Ministry after RGB.
This one sounds like it’s going to be pretty good. Some of the tracks sound like what everyone wants Skinny Puppy to be doing (“101” for instance).
It also sounds like they blended the sound developed with ‘Devil In My Details’ with the more rock ‘Welt’ sound and old Skinny Puppy. That is what I was hoping for.
I liked ‘Devil In My Details’ quite a bit but it did not stand up to repeated listens because the songs were more like sketches in one long journey. Still it was miles ahead of the latest Skinny Puppy.
These songs sound like they’ll be more fully fleshed out but they’re still retaining the atmospherics so that’s cool.
There is definitely an element of cheese to everything Nivek Ogre-related post-‘Last Rights’ (I think because of his changing vocal style moreso than anything), but I still enjoy some of the stuff quite a bit so I am looking forward to this.
I loved DIMD. It went in a totally different direction than the first two and I don’t think anyone saw it coming. This one, I’m not so sure about… A few cool songs, but it kinda feels like DIMD leftovers… And 101 sounds a lot like Assimilate.
I also loved DIMD but disliked the previous two Ohgr solo albums. DIMD sounded much more fleshed out and realized conceptually and less like Ogre doing stompy pop songs. I think DIMD is the best thing he’s done since Last Rights. The samples from this sound promising, I was a little worried after hearing that Collidoskope track he put out a few months ago as it seemed to be going back in that “spooky” pop music direction but this stuff sounds like it’s back on the right track imo.
Also, I heard from a fairly reliable source that this is actually the new Skinny Puppy album that was being worked on and is being released as Ohgr due to a bunch of inner band turmoil and financial hoo ha.

That sounds about right. Poor cEvin Key. I think he must feel pretty outnumbered doing “Skinny Puppy” music with Ogre and Mark Walk obviously having more creative input and control.
This totally sounds like it could have been “the new Skinny Puppy” and instead gets the OhGr stamp. The two brand names are kind of becoming interchangeable at this point…
I used to be a fan. I remember seeing them at the Paladium around '92 or whenever the Last Rights tour was. Fantastic show, but man, just getting in was like walking the gauntlet with all these dang hippies jumping in my face with clipboards and pictures of monkeys in cages and cats with wires in their heads . . . . "Hey man! Sign my petition for . . . " “Hey, take this newsletter about Animal Libera . .” “Hey, don’t you care about the Republicans trying to annhiliate the spotted owl . . .”
It got really annoying and I’d just push them away. “Get out of my face, Bro! I’m just here to rock!”

Last two ohGr albums sound more like puppy than the last actual puppy albums. I’m doubting this is the puppy album though. I remember an interview that ohGr was working on another album during the legal hiatus with the label (who doesn’t seem to want to let them go). Plus, ohGr is/was supposed to release a disc of outtakes and another of bsides. Assuming by the name, my guess is DIMD outtakes that turned into another album.
I’m bittersweet about hearing new puppy though. Didn’t really like the last two and am skeptical to hear any more.
Haven’t enjoyed post-return Puppy at all but really dug DIMD, though it’s been a while since I spun it. I started listening to the samples here but then realized yet again that I hate listening to minute long samples and I’d rather keep a surprise for when it comes out (it’s not like I won’t buy the album). That said, the 101 clip really did sound like Bites which was cool.
This is not the new Puppy album. It’s been mentioned before that he was working on solo material while the Puppy album was in label limbo. From what I hear, new Puppy will possibly be out before the end of the year.
And still don’t see why last couple of albums are looked upon with contempt. I actually much prefer them to the nasally whining and random chaotic noise of ‘‘classic’’ period Puppy. They’re certainly better than Too Dark Park and Last Rights which I find way too dense and impenatrable. I prefer my Puppy to have melody and cohesiveness…even if they do get a little too “rock” at times.

While Last Rights and Too Dark Park may be “noise” I’d argue those are the two most cohesive albums. I don’t see anything cohesive about the last two Puppy albums other than the songs sounding more poppy and accessible.
Also, I don’t wanna be some jack ass who’s all “this person told me this was the new skinny puppy album but I can’t tell you who it was”. But seeing as I have no history of doing that here and no interest in lying to ya’ll about the dude who told me, you can make the call. Regardless of what it is or was, the samples sound tops.
Yeah, it was worked on during the new SP. Actually, there was to be a throw-away SP album to get out of SPV’s content - but they went under before they could do so. Oops.
They’re mixing some of the new SP songs now…I am excited for new ohGr too
Listened to this yesterday…sounds a lot more like Welt than the direction he was going with on the last album (which I didn’t really care for). Definitely worth picking up.

Nasally whining? Really? To me the nasally whining really came out in Process. David “Rave” Ogilvie was the guy who applied the vocal modulations to most of the Puppy Albums and worked them into Cevins beats, from I believe MIND:TPI onward to Process, where I believe he worked on part of the album before quitting in frustration. But once Ogilvie was out of the picture Ogre’s voice was less distorted and effect modulated, and to me that’s where the nasally whine really came out, Process and forward. That’s another reason I don’t consider the last two Puppy albums true Puppy, because not only was Dwayne missing, but “Rave” Ogilvie, who was practically the 4th member, was also missing. And Mark Walk is okay on Ogre’s solo albums but I really don’t want the guy involved in Puppy. I would call the latter albums “Puppy in name only”.
They’re certainly better than Too Dark Park and Last Rights.
No.
And while you’re certainly entitled to your opinion, I doubt too many Puppy fans would agree with you.
Oh, I remember this buy posting a review of Mythmaker on Amazon, and it perfectly captures the way I feel about new vs. old Puppy:
The vanguard becomes the rear-guard, December 26, 2007

"The innovative techniques that made SKINNY PUPPY sound edgy and subversive twenty years ago now sound tired and lo-tech…
SKINNY PUPPY was fun to listen to. You could even dance to some of it. The early albums were fun; they were sinister with a hint of camp, like the dopey thrill of watching horror flicks with friends while getting high. The thrill is gone."
