NIN - Pretty Hate Machine (Remaster)

I’ve gotta say, this sounds pretty decent [cool]

And the inclusion of the Al produced “get down make love” definitely sweetens the deal !

It came out awesome was jamming in the tahoe to it the mastering job is insane the way it should be for such an awesome and one favorite albums…

new cover aint impressive, as is bonus content.

the remastering job fell as another victim of loudness war.

thanks for more clipping, trent

Yeah, that’s pretty apparent, now that i’m listening to it via Sennheiser 595’s.

Oh well, I still have the original. [:/]

You know, it’s really not that hard to use the url tags here.

Also, Trent should really be above this nonsense.

They really should’ve hired Erie Load.

Trent’s only good record needed no remaster.

well it is indeed louder - maybe a touch too loud, it is also way more ‘clear’ in the synths/samples area. it was still very nice overall (not the best job i’ve heard, but not the worst). assuming i’m not at home (car/iphone or something) i’d take the remaster over the original. at home where it might bother me - the 1989 for sure, since i can just crank that shit up.

the artwork re-do is silly, but at least you won’t mistake the two.

Not sure how i’m feeling about this one. It’s definitely louder, but feels a lot more hollow than the original was. The original was muffled at times, but that’s one of the things that helped it stand out these days. Now it’s just weird. I’ll listen to it more and try to grow on it, but I dunno…

Guess i’m 0-2 right now with remakes/mixes/remasters today.

Here’s Pitchdork’s glowing review http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/14890-pretty-hate-machine/

I’m still a bit baffled by y’all who think this is the only good Nine Inch Nails album Trent ever made. There’s good stuff on here, but the best? Hrrmmmm.

Eh, just another example of musical arrogance (I realize I’m kind of doing that myself in the KMFDM thread, but I can defend my position if I need to).
I actually think it’s probably the WORST NIN record. It’s very dated - essentially it’s the last gasp of '80s synthpop.

I like the bit in the Pitchfork review where he calls Trent an “internet-friendly cool uncle”.

WHOA!!!

The worst? I don’t know about that buddy boy, that honor goes to With Teeth. No doubt.

Well I don’t think I’ll be picking this up if its another case of “loudness war” :frowning:

For me, PHM is angry, honest and very blunt, whereas TDS was plastic and hot topic-ee. Admittedly, I haven’t listened to much after TDS but as dishonest as that album was(Save for hurt not so much the lyrics but the music is fantastic), the perfect drug was even worse and I really have had no drive to check out anything else by Trent since. I could see why others like it but I don’t think Trent has ever put out as anything as honest as PHM.

Why does everyone hate With Teeth so much? Yeah it’s pretty different from everything else he’s done but that album’s really got it’s moments. Those moments being You Know What You Are, Sunspots, Getting Smaller and the title track. Only was the only single I really liked off the whole album. The Hand That Feeds is a fun one for karaoke. If I had to say any album is the weakest I’d have to go with The Slip. The first half of the album is better live, but the real highlights of the album are the last 2 trax

There’s good stuff on PHM, but it’s easily the most “wimpy” album, full of angsty woe as me lyrics and sonically it’s nowhere near as heavy, or good, for that matter as Broken or TDS. I get that TDS was the album that made them huge and shot them into mall crowd fame. That doesn’t make it a bad album. Was it that attitude of “Nine Inch Nails arent underground enough” from the mid 90’s that drove ya’ll away? Not sure what you find dishonest about TDS grmps. Maybe lyrically you think it’s crap. I’d say sonically it’s quite creative. I think the sampling on that album is pretty brilliant, but to each his own I spose. I do like tracks off PHM, I just don’t think it’s solid or musically as interesting as pretty much everything that came after it. Not trying to flame here, just tossin’ in my two cents. Whoop there it is.

yeah the lyrics for TDS, I think, are more angsty than PHM. PHM was inspired by Trent walking in on his best friend and his fiance. very raw and angry. TDS “Hey, let’s get angry at the man!” just didn’t seem very honest. kinda hard to still be angry when you’re a millionaire. I was really expecting something more personal from the dude. I really didn’t dig the hooks either. “hey I’ll make the drums louder than every other instrument that will really drive home that I’m angry.”

Not trying to flame here, just tossin’ in my two cents. Whoop there it is.

me too.

to me TDS is certainly heavier as far as sound goes and PHM is very thin sound wise but I really think the honesty and the subject matter really makes PHM much heavier than anything he’s done since. my two cents

I think PHM is a great album if you’re a pussy-ass bitch, otherwise it has it’s moments but is mostly middling.

That’s not what it is at all. It’s literially the self destruction of a person. Not sticking it to the man. There’s an album or two for that though. Those pussy ass bitches or whatever probably adore Twitch too. Guilty.

Guilty as charged.

[cool]

I’ve tried, honestly tried, to get into the other stuff. Broken/Fixed, from what I’ve heard, is pretty cool, but just didn’t grab me the way PHM did. Downward Spiral would be decent enough, but it’s one of those records I can’t listen to because of the people and places it conjures up, you know? Never listened to the Fragile. With Teeth is decent, I love the FUCK outta “Only.” I wound up giving away my copy of Year Zero to some kid because I thought the record sucked.

PHM is my favorite NIN record for two big reasons:

I. It just resonates with me in that snarky, playful, and semi-mysoginistic kinda way, and

II. I spent a week doing nothing but getting REALLY high and playing Super Mario World to this album and for some reason, something magical happened and everything just kinda clicked together into one crazy, cohesive whole. You know those guys that insist Dark Side of the Moon and the Wizard of Oz synch up perfectly? That’s PHM and Mario Bros. I have NO fuckin’ clue why.
