In san diego there was a place (Maybe it’s still there) called the Museum of Death and they had a whole wing on serial killers. very VERY disturbing shit. the museum I mean, not necessarily the serial killer section, although the serial killer artwork was amongst the creepiest shit I’ve ever experienced.
Ramirez had a metallica Bat to the skull from Damage Inc (from the shirt that I always see) drawing but way more crude than Metallica’s and I think he drew it before Metallica drew theirs.
But I’m pretty sure I remember this one there as well, and I think it was the original or so they claimed it was. they openly said when they had reproductions.

Aside from the most recent Christopher Dorner case (the rogue cop-killer / manifesto jackass) Richard Ramirez’ case is the only one that I recall really having a public impact in my community DURING his spree/ capture, etc.
I was only about 12 years old at the time, but I remember everyone talking about it, being extra vigilant, locking doors, etc. And it was huge news on the playground when they caught his ass. He was trying to boost a car in East LA when he was spotted and recognized and he was circled and the angry mob beat the everliving crap out of him. Right as it went down, one vigilante (I’ll just call him Sir Awesome) pulled out a loose fence post from a yard to use as a proper thrashing stick.
About 7 years after, I dated a gal whose Aunt was raped and murdered by him. Also, goth rocker Eva O (ref: Christian Death/ Super Heroines/ Eva O Halo Experience) dated the man himself and wrote a song about it.

Merle Allin (yeah, GG’s brother) has kept communication with the guy for quite some time (because he’s weird and likes to talk to serial killers and get their artwork). I was pretty pissed off when I saw a letter in Merle’s collection which had personalized NIGHT STALKER (complete with pentagram, etc.) stationery from Ramirez. I don’t know why, but it really made me mad that the prison allowed him to have and use this stuff and play this celebrity rockstar roll.

Yeah,Ramirez was oblivious to the fact that his picture was everywhere and when he went in to a convenience store the clerk recognized him and made a scene about it which led to people chasing him and cornering him…by the time the cops showed up he was basically pleading for their help…the mob were kicking the piss out of him…

Anyway, regarding my past girlfriend . . . no, I didn’t know who the aunt was and I didn’t know any of this before we were dating. It came up one time when she was talking and I don’t even remember how the subject arose. I NEVER asked about it again, though. As curious as I was, I don’t know how to deal with such awkwardness with any sort of eloquence, especially since I would be asking purely because of morbid interest (it’s not like me knowing would enable me to help anything or change anything, so there’s really no value for me to ask). I know. That’s one of the aspects that make those cases so creepy. It makes me look at everyone with a different lens . . . my neighbors, friends, relatives, co-workers . . . they are all possible suspects in my mind.
I liked when he was finally sentenced and he flashed his pentagram hand and said, “See you at Disneyland”. He had some serious media star power. And as far as serial killer nicknames, his (“Night Stalker”) is pretty hard to beat. I think “Jack The Ripper” might be the only one I would rank higher.
