New Skinny Puppy Tour

voidhead and I went tonight, was fucking killer. Great setlist, great sound - the mix was perfect. Stage show was kind of similar to the one early this year, but I gotta say Ogre’s voice is the strongest I’ve heard up until now. This is my 4th show of theirs, that bastard sounded MEAN and RAW.

Stealththought, you will love the setlist and the new-ish tracks.

P.S. FLA and Haujobb were eh

FLA was boring. Their songs just aren’t very good and the guy doesn’t have the charisma to make it work despite that. Skinny Puppy was great! Though I will say a lot of their new stuff was a cavernous blob of sub bass live…for example “Village” which is a song I actually enjoy was not good live

Apparently I’m the only one here who prefers VNV Nation to Frontline Assembly.
Ah well. Shrug.

I do as well.

After seeing both bands live, I may actually have to agree. Frontline Assembly live was just a poor man’s Skinny Puppy. It felt especially pointless when the real thing was playing right after.

In fact the entire tour was basically comprised of Skinny Puppy and a pack of clones.

VNV Nation would have made more sense in hindsight, with their more straightforward melodic approach providing a nice counterpoint to the more bizarre stylings of Puppy.

This has always been my opinion about FLA in general. I do like some of their tracks though.

Yeah, I caved in and checked out the setlist, and it’s looking pretty good! And I actually heard Weapon a bit after it came out, and was surprised that I actually liked it, for the most part. I guess using all that old gear was a good idea.

Tonight is the night, and it is O’s birthday.

SKINNY PUPPY Setlist - Fox Theatre, Pomona, CA 12/20/14:

Fritter (Stella’s Home)
Convulsion
Illisit
VX Gas Attack
The Choke
Wornin’
Deep Down Trauma Hounds
Testure
Village
Hexonxonx
First Aid
Pasturn
Worlock
Paragun
Solvent
Encore
God’s Gift (Maggot)
Smothered Hope
Glass Houses
Assimilate

Great show, slightly arranged set list and visuals from the January show in Tempe. Ogre’s vocals on Testure were the best I’ve heard live in the past ten years (sounded a lot like the album version). The sound in Fox Theatre was very good. FLA sounded great, though their set was way too short. Dino Cazares from Fear Factory joined the band onstage for “Millenium” for the closer. Rhys Fulber was also in the FLA lineup.

Here is footage of “Solvent” by SP, shot by someone else (I didn’t take pics or video):

They have so much material, they could easily do another tour with a completely different setlist. This most recent Pomona show might be the best show I’ve seen them do since they started touring again. It would only be second to the LA show where Ken Marshall was working the soundboard.

Did you and tenoh meet up? If memory serves he’s out of Az. I was wondering what he was doing at Amoeba but now the Skinny puppy post it makes sense.

Pomona was such a good goddamned show.

I didn’t meet up with anyone, unfortunately. I was on a much needed mini-vacation for the weekend with my girlfriend. We actually bought tickets for the tour when VNV was still on the bill (so glad VNV bailed and FLA was added). I would like to have heard some Caustic Grip/Wax Trax-era material, but we did get “Mindphaser”, and the band sounded great. Missed Youth Code because we stood in line for a half-hour at a parking meter that was malfunctioning. Haujobb was just ok. I don’t care much for the vocals, and their music doesn’t have any memorable melodies or hooks a la FLA or Puppy.

We stayed in West Covina, and just bummed around Hollywood and surrounding areas, and also found a great brewery taproom in Pomona called Sanctum Brewing (a couple of blocks from Fox Theatre, perfect pre-show drinking spot). Amoeba and Pink’s are always must-stops for me when I drive to Cali from Phoenix for a concert. Possibly going back to L.A. in March for Clan of Xymox at a venue called Complex (never been there?).

The Complex is a new industrial/EBM bar in Glendale. Tiny place with a tiny stage.
