New Pantera

New single is out today. Meh.

They used part of it for Strength Beyond Strength from Far Beyond Driven.

Kinda nice to hear something unreleased though…

Nascar Metal…[sly]

“Pantera: Serving all your trailer parks’ metal needs since 1985”

Yep,back when he was Diamond Darrell…

I actually like the pre-Phil Pantera. There’s a fun energy to it. I hate that stupid macho doucherock that came after, though. And I don’t know what Pantera concerts are like in your neck of the woods, but when I saw them do Ozzfest down here (circa 2001) it was like a Klan rally. I’d never seen so many stupid drunken fat rednecks and wannabe skinheads in my life. All marching around, Sieg-Heiling and being fat and drunk. It was gross.

Yeah,it’s the same shit down here…

Yeah, it’s metal for bullies. That’s when people started getting into mosh pits with the express purpose of hurting other people.

Pick 100 rednecks from a trailer park that you LEAST want to ever see without a shirt. Now take off their shirts. There’s nothing more disgusting than a Pantera pit. The violence is one thing. I mean, sure, it sucks getting kicked in the nuts by a 400 lb. gorilla. But I think getting shoved against their hideously disgusting sweaty hairbacks and beer bellys is far worse. Honestly, just thinking about it makes me want to puke.

I love(d) Pantera. Thought they were great back in the day. Still play it rather frequently.

Hardcore shows have some nasty pits. I’m thinking Sick Of It All, Madball, Cro-Mags, etc… Basically most NYHC.
I love the music, just am too scared of the pits.

Saw Madball up here once, and they brought some friends from NYC with them. They basically went in the pit and annihilated anyone in there.

Saw Patera quite a few times too. Their pits were pretty bad. Lots of shirtless, hairy, sweaty, fat guys. Good times.

Slayer pits are pretty brutal as well.

Too old for that stuff nowdays.

edit: for those of you that want to hear it:

The last time I ventured into a pit was the Ministry tour for Rio Grande Blood (whatever it was called, can’t remember). I’m a big fan of Senor Peligro, so I had to jump in for that one.

The whole time I was just thinking “Oh man, I hope my knee doesn’t pop out of joint!”

And that’s how I knew I was too old for moshing.

It was actually 2000. Saw the show in Mountain View. That was the first time I saw fire in a pit and it was filled with big dudes. Makes me think of Slipknot at Ozzfest '05. There were nazi skinheads in the pit and I ended up getting burned with a cigarette. Yeah Pantera’s heavier stuff is kinda elementary for me, but I still like the first two albums with Phil (Power Metal and Cowboys From Hell). But if you wanna see a pit full of sweaty dudes go to a Skinny Puppy show.

Seen Puppy live (with Godflesh, actually, so if Peligro’s reading he can get all giggly) on the Last Rights tour in 1992. The so-called “pit” was really docile. A lot of gothy goths and industrialized creepoids doing the zombie walk around in a circle with some faggy flair thrown in here and there.

I have a biological need to go in the pits. Once the music is rockin’ I just can’t stop myself and I feel like I NEED to thrash around. I don’t mind getting elbowed and banged around, but the problem is I have ZERO stamina and endurance (are those even different things?).

Nowadays I have to carefully plan out my pit time. Hmmm, looks like they’re gonna play “song X”. That’s a 3 minute song, so once it gets to the first chorus I’ll jump in and be able to make it to the end of one song.

I look cool for about a minute but find myself gasping for air before too much time has passed. I’ll often just help hold the wall now. I get enough peripheral action with the kiddies bumping into me and me throwing them back in and helping up the occasional stumbler.

I’m old.

That is absolutely spot on. I love the tattoos too.

I’ve never seen a pit at a SP show. It’s all like how Gunnar described it ^. Still LOVE seeing them live though.

And about stamina… saw The Casualties a few months ago, and it’s the same thing. Run in for a song, get banged around a bit, then leave.

Long way from my running distance track in high school. =(

Capt Url,my hero!!!

Go see SP in San Francisco some time and you’ll get a legit pit. At least I got one in '07 on the Mythmaker tour. It wasn’t a very big pit from what I remember but there were a couple of sweaty dudes and I remember a guy in a Neurosis shirt singing along to almost every song. I got that pit going when Fascist Jock Itch came on. That was the first tour they played that song. That version made me love Justin Bennett as a drummer. The majority of you guys hate Mythmaker but those songs kicked ass live. Better show than Pantera anyday.

I could have sworn Pantera was shot to death back in '04
