[reply]With all the jaded attitudes abounding here (and no doubt elsewhere), it’s a wonder someone like Trent even bothers trying to continue with NIN.
If artists based their career moves on what jaded people on the internet say then there would be nobody making music…[/reply]
Oh believe me I know! The whole “Industrial Rock” scene seems to attract this particular type of person because of the combination of the negativity in the music and the more “high brow” technical elements.
I remember before NIN got it’s own message board he would sometimes pop into ETS and talk shit to random people who’d posted something negative about his newest album. So, at one point he did read what people on the internet were saying and had no problem giving them shit for it.
I highly doubt he gives a fuck anymore though or ever cared enough to where it would make him quit making music or cater to a certain audience. Otherwise every album after 1994 would have essentially been The Downward Spiral Part 2 and so on.
Been following Trent and NIN since the pre-Fragile days, and I can’t help and greet this news with apprehension. Some points that definitely raise my eyebrows:
The touted addition and subsequent departures of Avery and Belew doesn’t exactly scream “reinvention”. On the other hand, if the new album takes NIN in daring new directions, having what’s essentially the same lineup from '09 isn’t necessarily a drawback. They have the talent to bring to life whatever he’s been conceiving in the studio, including Belew’s contributions. It’s the insincerity of hearing songs like Terrible Lie for the 1000th time that bugs me.
No fresh blood. Reznor’s been collaborating with sirs Ross and Moulder since With Teeth and The Fragile respectively. I think if trying to find new sounds without sounding like rehashing himself, common complains lodged toward the How to Destroy Angels LP earlier this year, Reznor would greatly benefit from either going it alone or not being so tight knit with these two gentlemen. With all the negativity pointed towards Reznor through the decades, it’d be very rare to hear someone complain about NIN songs sounding alike. This brings me to my next point.
Is it fair to expect the new album to be a gamechanger? NIN is now a 25 year old creative entity. Even Bowie, ever the sonic chameleon started dog paddling in stagnant waters around that many years, and if i’m going to indulge and contrast to his “industrial” peers from the same time period, he’s given it a far greater whack. Maybe that’s the commercial success he’s enjoyed. It’s just hard for me to imagine what roads he could take Nine Inch Nails at this point without sounding like he’s retreading old ground. Personally I’d like to hear more left-field experiments in the vein of a “Perfect Drug” or “All the Love in the World”. Songs with no antecedent. Reznor is a HUGE music fan and it’s interesting to hear him get playful with his influences instead of rewriting “Wish” or “Closer” again.
I think he’ll put out something interesting. I have no doubts that there will be some of the modern NIN sound on there, as well as soundtrack type stuff. I’m expecting it to have some new avenues as well. With the exception of With Teeth and The Slip, his work has always explored new and exciting territories.
I’ll never understand the With Teeth hate. It was the album I didn’t expect and I loved it from day one (maybe in large part because it was so unexpected). Still one of my favorite NIN albums. It’s fucking solid. The Slip is far weaker, in my opinion. It was exciting at first because it sounded like “heavy NIN” but that wore off rather quick.
Every NIN album sounds drastically different from the one before it though. So, I’m always a bit more excited just at hearing what direction he decides to go with on a new album. I would be more interested in another Year Zero themed album had HTDA not released an album with so many YZ similarities recently.
Honestly, all I want are more motherfucking guitars on the new album. And hopefully it’s not a Ghosts album. Fuck, that would suck so bad after two soundtracks, Welcome Oblivion, and no new NIN since 2008.
I don’t understand the With Teeth hate either. I’m hoping he and the band bust out a few from it that aren’t singles. As for The Slip, the first half needs to be experienced live.
People that are into supposedly cutting edge or quasi-underground bands have to hate any inkling of commercial breakthrough and success. The “Bite The Hand That Feeds” song was all over the damn radio, Guitar Hero, etc. etc.
That’s probably the only NIN song from the last 20 years that I can name or recognize. It killed any interest I might have randomly had in checking out what Trent and his buddies have been up to then and continuing on forever.
That song always cracked me up. It just sounds so perfect for Jazzercise/ Aerobics that whenever I hear it I want to run in place or do some jumping jacks.

Trent’s other mastery is making damn beautiful music. I want more of that than the “pissed off” sound of the Broken EP. He’ll never top the heaviness of that album anyways.
It’s probably not going to be a very angry record. He’s married, he’s got a kid, he’s winning awards, Bush is out of the White House. What’s he got to be mad about?
I just want something new and interesting. If I want to hear heavy NIN, I’ll throw on Broken. If I want epic prog rock, I’ll listen to The Fragile. I’m all for new directions rather than repeating, because when you repeat you have to match or top the previous effort, it never turns out well.
I’d like to hear a heavier rock-oriented record, but like you guys said, what’s he got to be angry about?
If he does go the more rock route, I can’t imagine him something much different from ‘With Teeth’ or ‘The Slip’, which is fine.
more rock oriented like “with teeth”?! i fucking hope not. that album isn’t terrible on it’s own, but it is when you compare it to the rest of his output. that’s the worst possible scenario imo.

It also rips off the riff to Peace Sells by Megadeth.
well lets be fair; nin has been “tame” starting from, say 1997 or so? not dissing anything but anything after downward spiral just wasn’t as intense as before, and i aint a fanboy of that album.
fragile was cool at the time, sure. it still is, but now i look at it as just a slower more “older” nin that was just also bloated and kinda blurry. nothing prog-rock about that record. with teeth was ok and playing it “safe”.
year zero was attempt to change direction (after playing it safe). slip was just like an afterthought, it had same “sound” and feel as year zero, just like it was some sort of b-side and outtake collection. but hey, it was fuckin’ free!
most exciting thing about ghosts release to me was the distribution of it and the way it was presented for people to buy. musically it was forgettable, just like that ‘acoustic’ extra cd called “still” from live release. just fucking borig…
saw them live only once, cuz they been in Russia only once. it was easily top 3 live shows i’ve ever seen. not holding much hope for reznor’s new output, but would be nice to see them live again if they come by.

whaaaat
riff? maybe one phrase from the chorus part, sure
but thats like saying that mustaine ripped it off from “you’ve really got me now” (which actually is what comes to peoples minds when they hear that “hand that feeds” nin song)

I Don’t hear the peace sells rip but I certainly hear the jazzercise connection.

the period encompassing the fragile is definitely his high point imo. still (the album) is the last truly amazing piece of work he put out, and the fragile is just a fucking epic masterpiece.

Dammit, now the song has been tainted. And that was a favorite back in the days of playing Rock Band.
Ever really listen to the song 1,000,000? Doesn’t the opening drum beat make you wanna scream Just One Fix?
