I’m a big fan of Year Zero, but didnt like With Teeth or The Slip. With Teeth and The Slip were half assed and had a commercial sound and feel to them if you ask me.
Year Zero didnt have an edge to it, but it was still catchy yet kinda heavy, it was experimental which is were Reznor’s talent shines.
I didn’t really care for With Teeth either. Had a few songs, but that’s about it. Year Zero was prety damn good for what it is. Very noisy, very experimental. That crazy synth part at the end of The Great Destroyer is priceless. It’s like he wanted to do do apeshit synth solos. I actually like The Slip a lot. The second half is a bit weak, and it probably would’ve been better off as an EP. But, to me, it’s a more realized version of what With Teeth could have been. The second half is bland though. I wouldn’t ended it after Lights in the Sky. The other three after that was just dragging the dead horse. The first half of that album though was priceless imo.
I can’t believe you guys like something I dislike! I mean really, the nerve of you all!
I’m pretty much with Amlux on this one. Except I wholly support PHM. Other than that NIN is over hyped pish! but this is the first I have posted in this thread and probably the last unless it takes a funky turn and we start discussing athlete’s foot or something… no need to get up I’ll show myself out.
Occasionally…just occasionally…you say something that is so spot on it makes my head spin.
Which is interesting because 95% of the time you are talking absolute gibberish.

Trent is a king among men (or a king amongst drunks, lardos and all the other aging rock stars) when it comes to keeping his head above water, esp. with his fans. He released 4 full studio albums (1 given away for free another at cheap price), a remix album, a live DVD and toured at least 3 times within the space of four years. The music on the recent albums is arguably not up to the standard of the early 90s output (some may disagree). Regardless they were still pretty good. I saw NIN play last summer and they were fucking amazing. His music may not be as exciting as it used to be but the integrity of his character cannot be questioned. He’s a smart and decent guy and I’ll always check out what he has to offer.
I’m with you Mick.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Wow…that was the gayest thing you’ve ever posted Mick…RESPECT!
“Trent is totally cool. Trent is a nice guy. Trent has integrity. Trent is even nicer than Paul Barker (although his music is about as exciting). Trent is nice to his fans. Trent released 26 albums, 15 EP’s, 17 singles, 12 DVD’s 18 VHS tapes and 29 graphic novels over the last 3 weeks. I saw NIN live and they were totally awesome (even though they were really pish). I am totally NOT gay for Trent.”
Sorry…but your on your own with that one Mick.

I totally went all Crusing on that one but I stand by it… mainly cos I can’t sit down after it.
EHEHEHEHEHEHEH
Trent is famously nice to his fans, but word is he’s kind of a dick to his bandmates.

Well to be fair…his band mates don’t give him millions of dollars like his fans do.
Those of you crying about how NIN is pop for 16 year old goths are more than 10 years too late first of all and second of all, do you even listen to the fucking music?
There is also a lot of musical and technological sophistication in Reznor’s work, and his lyrics have improved (though it was never his strong point). People could say the same about Ministry, how it’s goth metal for pierced drug addicts. Blanket statements are so easy to make, yet these artists are more complex than that.
And grmpy, you think NIN is whiney goth teen shit and yet you like ‘Pretty Hate Machine’, the whiniest most new wave pussiest album in his catalog? Ok.
I appreciate experimental music but honestly it’s nice to have experimental and rock/pop blended so seamlessly and that’s what I look to NIN for when I’m sick of endless hours of Merzbow feedback with no quality control and want something more refined and polished with the occasional melody.
I think once again the haters on here are just an example of people who grew up eschewing anything that was popular to the point that you automatically hate anything that had any real commercial success and that attitude is just boring…

Damn, right on for every single point Voidhead!

I never said it was whiney goth kid stuff. I said it was over hyped. I rather like PHM specifically because of the lyrics. I think most of those lyrics are the most heart wrenching lyrics ever put to music. Very visceral.

Gay.
You are such a moron.

I knew deep down that smurfy was a bigger emo than Voidhead.

Ten years too late? Why is it too late to voice your disliking for an artist? Can I not voice my dislike for The Rolling Stones because I was born ten years after they began?
And yes, I have listened to and have even bought Nine Inch Nails. I tried to get into it, tried to buy into the hype, tried to find something of value somewhere in the murky depths - but I failed each and every time.
I gave up on the band. It’s not my thing and never will be.
There is also a lot of musical and technological sophistication in Reznor’s work, and his lyrics have improved (though it was never his strong point).
Musically…don’t have a huge problem with it. It’s the vocals (atonal, breathy and just plain awful) and ESPECIALLY the lyrics which make me howl with uncontrollable fits of laughter.
‘Emo’ wasn’t around when I first became aware of NIN - but it fits so snugly, so perfectly now that I have had time to dwell on it.
It’s so FUCKING EMO!!!
“Dear Diary…today I looked in the mirror and saw an empty void…my life is pain…I need to hurt…you don’t understand me…there is no god…there is nothing…I am empty…I deserve nothing…I cannot connect with myself or those around me…well then, it’s a good thing I have a legion of hot chicks at my disposal and millions in the bank and at least a dozen websites devoted to my existance else I’d top myself after morning tea…”
Now, that kind of thing works from time to time if one is particularly well versed and witty enough to pull it off (hello Morrissey). But Reznor has all the skill and grace of an ADD afflicted teenager with serious delusions of grandeur. His efforts are only slightly more credible than Fall Out Boy or Good Charlotte - bands which incidentally NIN have more in common with than most fans would dare to admit.
People could say the same about Ministry, how it’s goth metal for pierced drug addicts. Blanket statements are so easy to make, yet these artists are more complex than that.
NIN fans are such easy targets…but I have little time for nitpicking them. Live and let die etc. Feznor’s music does sound ‘teeny’ and ‘whiny’ and ‘goth pop industrial’ regardless of who listened to it - which is why I constantly label it as such. If gay wrestlers made up the majority of Feznor’s fanbase I’d still be slinging the same shit at him. I don’t ‘hate’ the fans!
I appreciate experimental music but honestly it’s nice to have experimental and rock/pop blended so seamlessly and that’s what I look to NIN for when I’m sick of endless hours of Merzbow feedback with no quality control and want something more refined and polished with the occasional melody.
I agree with you here. I get sick of noise too. Which is why I turn to ‘poppier’ music from time to time depending on what mood I’m in.
I think once again the haters on here are just an example of people who grew up eschewing anything that was popular to the point that you automatically hate anything that had any real commercial success and that attitude is just boring…
My dislike for Reznor has nothing to do with commerciality or popularity or success or whatever. If it did I’d be inclined to dump my entire Led Zeppelin collection in the bin and run out and buy the latest CCCC or Sutcliffe Jugend releases seeing as the are so ‘cult’ and so ‘underground’ and devoid of melody and pop sensibility.
