New Metallica Song

Has anybody heard it?

It’s been quiet around here lately. Metallica always starts some good fights. Let’s bicker!

I’ll go first: I don’t hate it. As Gunnar can attest, I am very critical of Metallica’s post-Justice output. But this isn’t too bad. Perhaps a little generic lyrically, but I kind of dig the tempo.

*Edited for clarity

Pretty good…short and reminds me of holier than thou.

Tom

I listened to it the other day and was smiling for the first 90 seconds or so but the lyrics are terrible. It’s short at least. It sounds like something that didn’t make it onto Death Magnetic. I don’t dislike it or anything, it’s just not great.

I listened to it for just a bit last week at low volume on a shitty laptop speaker . . . . sounded lame, but it wasn’t a fair assessment.

I had planned to do a proper listen this last weekend and totally forgot. I’ll try to give it a test drive tonight.

nah, lame is a dead-on assessment here. the best thing about the new metallica song is that a new Darkthrone track hit the internet at the same time.

It’s ok. It reminds me of their early stuff, sans the melodic sections and lengthy solos. James’ voice sounded better than I expected.

I finally got a proper listen.
I fucking hate it.
It sounds like a big 'ol pile of shit to me.

I’m sure it would sound pretty cool live, but this . . . . no, it’s trash.

Metallica still rules.
But 8 years . . . . for this?

Hahahahahaha!

sound is very death-magnetic’y
its short, so it’s a plus

i mean if anything that album (death magnetic) could use is better production (not overcompressed constant digital clipping piece of shit sound) and better and harsher editing of the whole thing to ~45 minutes, shortening some songs and removing some tracks completely

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. People are calling this a “return to form” or whatever, but it just sounds like Death Magnetic.
I guess Metallica are the new Danzig, where every album is their “best since 1990!”

Never been a fan of this band(I think it’s the vocals and shitty sounding drums that always turned me off)…I haven’t listened to this song(and most probably won’t) just out of lack of interest…but I am curious, because I hear the same critique about them over and over…what could they do at this point that could possibly make you like their output? I hear people complain that they should get back to their thrash roots and then when they seemingly do,people complain that they are trying to ape their old sound with unsatisfying results…not sure what they are supposed to do…is it just bad songwriting? bad production? This band is obviously a completely mainstream act at this point in their career…just not sure what people expect from them…just an outsiders curiosity…

Now excuse me while I go listen to some Painkiller[mad]…

I think a lot of it definitely sounds too modern and sterile. Like it was made in some shitty millennial technological vacuum. “Hey, everyone set their PC’s to ‘metal sound’ and let’s all bang out our tracks so Joe Blow can put them all in and turn it into a song.”

It just sounds kind of soulless and tired to me.
Metallica is still a helluva force live and I think if they just blocked out time to do this shit all together as live takes . . . it might be cool. But it just sounds so generic and cold to me.

I evaluate all Metallica on its own. I’m admittedly a jaded old bastard, but I’ve also eventually moved past that. I can find a lot in even Load/Re-Load that is redeemable and even good. I don’t expect any albums to be the next “Puppets” or “Lightning”. I just want something that’s GOOD and touches me in my special places.

“Death Magnetic” had about 4 or 5 songs that I thought were really great. In this day and age that’s more than enough to make me happy.

I think Metallica is still a great band. They just aren’t necessarily making great albums. And, I can’t give any excuses for that.

Seriously, they’re not touring like normal bands. They don’t have side projects. They just putter around doing occasional festival and stadium shows. So I get a little frustrated when 8 years after their last album they give . . . . . THIS.

lf they’re happy with it, so be it. But I can’t imagine they listen to this and go, “Oh, yeah, now THIS is what we’d always had in mind.” Because it doesn’t sound unique, different, or special (this pisses off the “Metallica doesn’t try new stuff” crowd) . . . . . but it also also doesn’t particularly sound like “METALLICA” (pissing off the grumpy traditionalists).

yeah it’s also kinda funny that this thing affects many modern bands that in the past always had something in their sound that set them apart from others. even ministry, i mean all the later albums sound the same with overjuiced guitars and that drum sound. and it’s al who said something like “nowadays there are so much instruments and stuff available and everyone sounds the same” (including him i guess).

yeah i am familiar with that. the whole fact that somebody did this just kinda proves my point… metallica are not the only ones though. nowadays i guess the typical album has to be 60-70 mins long, therefore has alot of filler or weak tracks. at least the trend seemed to be that way. since the digital distribution gets more and more power this thing seems to go away a little bit though.

Metallica AREN’T Australian.

That is
God awful God!
Is there a melody trying to escape somewhere in that pile of static?
Usually if one of their songs blows you can still find ONE redeeming thing within the song, whether its a cool riff or a decent drum fill, or even just the sound of James’ voice. So, i guess theyre breaking new ground by getting rid of any of that.

Edit:

Almost sounds like theyre trying to make the rhythm to Holy Wars “better”

I am shocked by all this.

This is easily the best thing I’ve heard from them since. . . Well, that one song off Death Magnetic. I liked the one song on that album.

Otherwise, it’s back to Justice for me.

What? Were you guys hoping for “Hero Of The Day, pt 2”?

Wasnt really hoping for anything since i didnt know anything about it until the link was posted. But anytime i hear there’s new metallica im always hopeful for a return to form; so anything pre '91. Cool/relevant lyrics. Big crunchy guitars, melodic two hand tapping solos. Head bobbing drum patterns. But no. They keep making the next album shittier so the last album doesnt seem so bad in retrospect.

This is a great pull quote for this album. I really hope they use it.

You know people in the Biz. Tell 'em they can have it.
