I saw Priest in 1982 on the Screaming For Vengeance tour. I was 14. They rocked.
Afterwards, when I was walking through the car park to take the bus back to my hometown, some idiot threw a bottle at me. Luckily it missed - however it hit a young woman in the side of the face and cut her up real bad. I will never forget freaking out and running at the sight of so much blood.
There were a lot of red neck fuckwits at metal gigs in those days. I’m sure you’ve all watched Heavy Metal Parking Lot?
No wonder metal heads got a bad rep back then.
I almost got punched when i saw Black Sabbath (whose last album was great, Gila [:)]) in December, most of the crowd were great but there were a few arseholes shoving people and so on. I was standing with a few friends, side by side, and this guy shoved between myself and one of the others, no “excuse me” or “sorry, can i get through”, just fucking pushed me and walked between us. I gave him a good shove in the back and he turned around and threatened me. There’s some ignorant cunts at shows. If i need to get through people who are obviously in a group, i excuse myself and apologise, not this guy though. I probably shouldn’t have pushed him, but i’m sick of the macho bullshit and total lack of manners/etiquette from some of these morons.

We still get a share of 'em here and there (thank God, Pantera is defunct!), but they’re certainly not the norm. Most of the folk are good natured and even the rowdiest of us still look out for the rest and try to maintain some order.
But any time you have hard-edged or extreme music you kind of take a bit of danger along with it.
I was at a punk show in November, and (I just have no self-control) jumped in to the pit (old OC punk band, D.I. – love them!) to mix it up as I do. I was having a blast, but there were some skinhead goons that were just there to hurt people. I wasn’t really thinking how stupid it would have been if I’d gone through with it, but I considered clocking some fool at one point. It’s good I didn’t, as some other cat apparently got a little lippy and (as is to be expected with skinheads) all his goon brothers jumped in to beat the crap outta the kid. I didn’t see this go down as it was between sets and I was getting beer.
The Misfits (headliner) came on and things were just majorly packed and shovey and uncomfortable, so I went to a spot further back.
The next day I took my jacket out of the car to see that the back of it had blood splattered on it. I honestly don’t know if it happened during D.I. or Misfits or something else, but it was a little unsettling (and also kind of rad).
I hate trolls that go to shows to cause violence. It just makes me want to do violence too. But . . . . the jerks that come to shows to do violence typically come with 15-20 friends who also came to do violence, so it’s kind of a lose-lose situation.[/reply]

I think it was called the Metal Masters tour, or Masters of Metal or something. I actually had a ticket for it but couldn’t get back to the US in time. The US version had Priest, Motorhead, Testament . . . .someone else too. Maybe it was Megadeth. This was around 2008 so right around the same time frame you’re thinking of.
I would’ve preferred Megadeth. With all due respect to Dio, but he was rather boring. I’m only glad I saw him for 2 reasons. 1 being it ended up being his last tour and 2 I can say I saw both classic lineups of Black Sabbath. Dio was better than Ozzy, but that’s not saying a whole lot.

Megadeth were good, probably the least of the Big 4 for me and definitely the least enjoyable show i’ve seen by any of the Big 4 (apart from maybe the first time i saw Metallica and the fucking crowd just kept screaming for Whiskey in the Jar). I’d like to have seen Heaven and Hell, but i’m only a fan of Ozzy-era Sabbath really. I’m not sure if, when i saw Sabbath, Ozzy was actually in decent voice or whether i was just so overwhelmed to be seeing Sabbath that i imagined he was singing in an acceptable manner.
Dio ruled as a singer and as a person…end of story…

This.
I actually am a relatively new convert to the church of Dio. Sure, I knew of him and had heard Holy Diver and such, but up until about '01 I was pretty apathetic and kind of just thought of him as a bit of a joke . . . funny little troll singing about dragons and swords and whatever.
Then he was slotted as the middle act on a bill that was Motorhead, Dio, and Iron Maiden. My buddy and I were joking up until the gig about how Dio would come out in a cape and we’d be at the nacho bar. I figured I wanted to hear “Heaven and Hell” and “Holy Diver” and that would be all I needed. But HOLY CRAP!!! That leathery little bastard rocked the heck outta that place and just put on a show like nobody’s business. The other jaded skeptic friend and I became INSTANT fans. Then when we saw him in “Headbanger’s Journey” we were doubly pleased to see how great of a dude he was off stage as well.
I’ve never heard anyone have a bad experience meeting Dio. He just seems like one of the coolest cats ever. I’m sorry it took me so long to warm up to him, but I got nothing but love for him.
Yeah, nobody has a bad word to say about Dio, except for Vivian Campbell. Now, is everyone else who has ever met Dio wrong, or is Vivian Campbell just a cunt?

I’m not familiar with this little fallout, to be honest. I guess I’ll have to do some more research.
But, yes, I’m sure it is because Vivian Campbell is a c**t.
Oh dude, you have to watch the youtube vid where Dio is signing shit and someone mentions Viv Campbell and Dio just goes off and rips the fuck out of Viv…he also utters the immortal line “Def Leppard now there’s a band to get diarreaha with”…
Ha, Gunnar, i’m sure you’ll like him even less after reading about it. This is also the man who claims to have used his karate on Danzig (or something like that), so he may already be in your bad books.

Well, actually . . . you’re making a pretty strong case for me thinking he’s awesome, haha! Def Leppard can derelique my balls, but if someone is shouting their mouth off about using karate on Danzig they’ve gotta have something going on.
If any of y’all have any good story links or videos regarding this feud, please share them.
I thought the whole “Gene Simmons v. Dio” battle about the metal horns thing was always obscenely retarded. IT’S A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT HAND SIGN, YOU BUTTHOLES!!!
Dio gives the proper metal horns (which he tells us is derivative of some Italian gypsy sign called the “maloik”).
Gene Simmons just throws the ASL “I Love You” sign.
