Got the record. (Had a lousy download version since 4/14, but whatever.) Fucking brilliant. Could’ve come out in 1999. As close to Goth-punk as it gets. Also saw them both nights at Webster Hall. Fucking revelatory. Patton is God. And I must be praying polytheistically, because Gould, Hudson, Bottum, and Bordin are also Gods.
Just listened.
I know I’m in the distinct minority, but for my money they’ve never done better than The Real Thing and they should never have kicked out the metalhead guy who was in Bill & Ted.
Just picked up the 2CD re-issues of “The Real Thing” and “Angel Dust.” Both are remarkable albums, as you already know. The remasters sound amazing, and several of the b-sides (especially the live tracks) are extremely hard to find. Highlights include a Patton-sung live version of the old chestnut “Chinese Arithmetic” (on “The Real Thing” reissue) and a great live rendition of “RV” (on “Angel Dust”) that has Patton belching at a perfect moment.
One interesting note: each re-issue is divided by the original album (disc 1) and the b-sides/rare tracks (disc 2). “Angel Dust” now has “Easy” appended to it as the final track. I wonder if they did this for time purposes, or if the band truly feels that the cover belongs on “Angel Dust.” <shrug> Just a thought.

I think they did that, in the UK anyway, after the single was really popular, pretty sure it was on the releases after that single came out.
That video actually pisses me off.
It’s like, here’s an amazing very special intimate rock-and-roll-badass moment with Mr. Patton (I assume) up close and personal and putting his body and soul into a spontaneous performance and, at age 60 (or however old he is) CROWD SURFING . . . . .
And all these dildos, instead of being part of the experience and being at the ready to keep his fat ass lifted in the air properly . . . are standing around with their stupid cell phones in their hands.
“Oh, cool, it’s Mike Patton 8 feet from my face at a very special secret show. Too bad I can’t even see what the hell is going on because of an ocean of iPhones and Galaxys!”
Seriously, though, Acid . . . that looks like an amazing night!!!
It was an amazing show. And I didn’t pull my phone out for that exact reason.
When Mike gets to the end of the bar and takes the sip of whiskey, I’m the guy right in front of him head bobbing with a black hat and patting him on the shoulder. He then motions to me that he’s going back in and jumps right over me.

Patton’s stage presence with FNM is downright psychotic. I saw them in 1995 (I think) for the KFAD-FFAL tour. First song, Patton does a back flip and nails his head on one of the monitors. Do they stop the show? No fucking way. He played with blood dripping down his face for the whole show.
However, I’ve seen Patton with his other bands (most notably Tomahawk, Bungle and Fantomas) and he’s downright sedate when he tours with those guys. I think part of that is the array of electrical equipment he plays with when touring with those bands. Which is a shame, because I like untamed Patton over mad scientist Patton any day.
