I’m interested to hear what they sound like these days. Is it more the older clanking industrial percussive style, or the more austere stripped down musical later style? Something in between? Etc.
I started with Perpetuum Mobile, then went to the old stuff. Two totally different bands almost. The stuff from 80-92 is very experimental and pure noise, while the stuff from 92-current is a bit more music/melodic based. If you had to check out a newer one i’d say Alles Wieder Offen or The Jewels. Silence Is Sexy is also another good one. Older stuff, i’d say Halber Mensch or Haus Der Luge. There was a definite shift though.
Brilliant band, one of the few who I’d actually call genius. Blew my mind when I first heard them at the age of 17. Saw them live on the Perpetuum Mobile tour. I’d really love to see them again live, but it doesn’t seem like they’re ever going to come back to America [:(]
Favorite album would have to be Fuenf Auf Der Nach Oben Offenen Richterskala.
This is a true story, five years ago I once saw Blixa pushing around a shopping cart at a Whole Foods in Berkeley, CA. I stepped out of the bathroom and looked to my left, and saw him looking at vegetables with his wife. Certainly one of the most surreal moments of my life.
That’s awesome. Does he live up to the blixa bargeld lifestyle, or is he
a regular guy who does a character. He seems to strike me as one of those guys whose totally legit and there’s no schtick about him. Still saddening he left the bad seeds. Blixa’s certainly one of a kind.
Blixa seemed very flustered. He was in the checkout line next to mine, and he forgot some vegetables I believe, and ran to get some. And of course he was wearing a suit. I wanted to say something to him, but I didn’t want to bother him. Sort of like disturbing a rare bird…
Oh yeah, I also saw the singer of AFI there the year before. Not nearly as cool obviously…
I like everything I’ve heard or EN, and that’s really not too much. About half of Haus der Leuge (sp?) and “Yu Gung.” Need to get more. I’m probably gonna like pretty mucheverything they do, though, as loud, clanky industrial is <3. (I LOVE old-skool Die Krupps.)
I will say this, though. Blixa Bargeld is without a doubt my favorite rapper of all time.
I saw Jarboe at Target. I didn’t peak into her cart.
An acquaintance of mine saw Michael Gira buying black t-shirts at The Gap.
Swans was based near Atlanta for awhile in the '90s, and I think Jarboe still lives here. The last time I saw her around was at a Legendary Pink Dots show.
Speaking of which, I once ran into Edward Ka-Spel outside of Galaxy Music (if you know that shop Rev) and it was quite surreal. He was sitting on the sidewalk outside the door, and I did a complete double take while going in which made him laugh. The rest of the Dots were inside buying gear. Nice guys.

Yeah, Jarboe’s still here. Several friends/acquaintances of mine have performed with her in the past. I saw her at Sunn O))) several months ago. She was one of probably 5 females at the show, and she sat in the v.i.p. section.
I assume you mean the old Galaxy Music? I got my keyboard there. They moved to Dawsonville a year or so ago.
Wouldn’t recognize Ka-Spel if we walked through the door right now.
