Good luck with the upcoming gig, I’d be there if I were close by. If you can get one of your friends to tape a bit it would be cool to see some footage.
The story of your last show reminded me of a show I did over a decade ago where one of the acts was a guy who arrived onstage in a body bag, and proceeded to crawl out of it. His whole act consisted of him recitiing wretched poetry while he typed on this old typewriter that was miked up. He also had the adidas symbol shaved into his chest hair (???) I cannot for the life of me remember his name, but we still talk about ‘Body Bag Boy’.
Thanks for that. [:)] I taped the last one, but my friend is very lazy and I am STILL waiting for her to put it on the net. This one will be taped, but just on VHS until I figure out how to get it on the net.
This past gig of yours sounds AWESOME. Is that taped and on the net by any chance?
I have to admit, a lot of my friends were saying ‘this guy is insane’, but I have to disagree. I don’t think people who do this sort of stuff are genuinely insane or unstable. They planned it to the extent of buying the props and choreographing what they were doing to some degree. To me, that lack of spontaneity sort of nullifies whatever qualifies as genuinely ‘insane’.
I will say this though, anyone who does this stuff is a genuine eccentric though… and hell, at least it’s entertaining and gives people something to talk about. If more bands thought like this, maybe so many venues in Melbourne wouldn’t be closing down…
Have your recorded any of this new drone stuff? It seems like a 180 from your Mr. Bungle type stuff. Plans for a future release?
It is, and some friends who’d heard the stuff on the myspace who came to the gig were totally taken aback. They did not expect it, yet they didn’t exactly rubbish it. I think I managed to win over at least a couple of people… I think…
Anyway, I’ve become obsessed with this type of music and the effect it has on people watching it. Seeing sunn o))) live was definitely something which changed my attitude; plus, it was nice getting a full body massage for two hours [laugh]
However, I didn’t like much of sunn o)))'s recorded stuff (except for their latest album). To me, it didn’t capture the volume and intensity of the live show, and just sounded overly repetitive. The lack of volume really mitigated the effect of the music.
So, I figured I’d do this stuff live, but never record it. The recorded stuff however, cannot be done live; I don’t like telling people what to play, and hate the rehearsal process, and I prefer live music which is improvised and spontaneous to some degree.
It also has the perverse effect of alienating and pissing off anyone who comes expecting to see poppy rock songs, or better yet, opening their eyes to something they might even like. I didn’t see the point in preaching to the converted. For that exact same reason, I’ll be doing a solo piano performance… but supported completely by metal bands, who’s audience will probably expect noise or whatever…
You fucking had me at “angle grinder.”
WHY THE HELL ARE YOU IN AUSTRALIA FUCKIN AAAAAARRRGGH
Because my ancestors are convicts. I think this ‘angle grinder’ is potentially going to see me blacklisted from the venue… [laugh]
