So my wife is a big fan of Mumford. So for our anniversary we went to go see them at the Hollywood Bowl. I like more than just a few of their songs and I gotta say their show was pretty fucking good.
They sounded like their CDs. Their lead guitarist has got a powerful voice and he was on point ALL last night.
All of My favorite songs by them got played, which was awesome. I think Thistle & Weeds is my favorite by them and they played a powerful version of it. White Blank Page is probably my next favorite followed by Broken Crown and Little Lion Man. All of them played, all of them sounding amazing live.
I know they made the hate thread but if you’re into them you will not be disappointed with their live show. The singer’s voice hits a level of emotion that just isn’t captured in the CDs. The only complaint I barely had was the almost nil crowd interaction. but really they didn’t have to interact with the crowd the music spoke for them.
Didn’t you say they did a crappy Simon & Garfunkel cover awhile back?
I did. and I still stand by that. Their rendition of “The Boxer” was horrifically bad, but it is no where near representative of their entire body of work and is easily the worst song they’ve recorded. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if “The Boxer” was a first take recording put on the album as an after thought, but the rest of their catalogue is very solid. Plus they didn’t play that song at the concert.

No need for dramatics. I gave them a chance, listened to a few clips and found them trite and unconvincing. This kind of thing leaves me cold.
If twee, folk pop with rollicking guitar chords, upright bass knob twibbling and “diary confessional” musings on life and love is yr thing, then as you were.
Personally, i’m gonna sit back and wait for the new Scott Walker lp to mosey on in.
Talented enough players but i always just refer to them as Bumford and Sons, they’re quite mediocre and i wouldn’t find them interesting enough to listen to. That said, they are making a great living from their own talent and hard work, so i can’t really criticise them just because it’s not my cup of tea. Fair play to them.

Can’t believe you didn’t mention the redneck banjo!!
Also, the fact that he’s singing about Shakespeare, Plato and Steinbeck is probably way above you anyway. So it’s not a shock that you don’t dig it. Especially after a “couple of clips on youtube.”
Try to introduce culture to some people and they go and get a gun sheesh! [rolleyes]
Above all of that this really wasn’t a convert you thread, just a little concert review. Like most things Peligro, we aren’t gonna agree. So there really aren’t any dramatics, it’s just me responding to your snobbery as usual.

What do you mean mediocre? mediocre as far as what? I know they have an odd sound to them. They’re certainly a guilty pleasure from what I usually listen too. I find the guy on the banjo mesmerizing and and the dude’s voice sounds beautiful.
For the record I’m not batting for Mumford, I don’t need to convince people to like what I like to lend myself credibility. Just wondering where the mediocre part comes in with you.

I like the banjo too. There’s a real organic and genuine feel to this band’s songs that sounds really fresh and easy to connect with. It’s out of my normal musical diet too, but I like it.
I would describe them as a festival band that your girlfriend might like and you along to see because she wants to see them and you don’t kick up too much of a fuss because at a festival amongst everything else you don’t find them too offensive to your tastes and it will please the gf and probably make her horny…
They are the most banal & hideous excuse for folk music to come out of the UK for at least one million years. They make Nickleback sound like Hendrix jamming with Miles Davis.

I’d say they were a little better than that. but sure!

I wouldn’t classify them as folk music. nor progress nickleback up any ranks because of their existence, but hey to each their own.

I shouldn’t have expected anything different from Peligro. it’s his normal no talent music. Some kid with downs has a stuffy nose and is singing while snapping his fingers and running a fork on the outside of the fan.
I think they’re just very vanilla if you know what i mean, i find them unextraordinary and quite middle of the road. Definitely festival girlfriend music like Zick said, but as i mentioned, they’re making a fortune and i’m not so what the fuck do i know.
