Is it just me or does he look very much like the Dude (Big Lebowski) in that photo?

He looks like how I’d imagine the ‘dudes’ from Sum 41 or Sublime will look like 10 years from now.
Rimshot
I just heard an instrumental off this album which is by and large the best thing they’ve done in twenty years. It actually took some effort to convince me that I was in fact listening to the same band who churned out…um…Invisible Kid!
And to think I’d written them off
Anything like “Orion”?
It’s good enough that I stopped calling them Selloutica. It’s not a perfect record, but really enjoyed a good percentage of it.
Icepick, track 9, “Suicide and Redemption”, is a near 10-minute instrumental that speeds up, slows down, etc., so it’s similar in style to Orion, but also doesn’t really sound like it. Seems like they were going for it…second to last track, instrumental, rhythm changes, etc.

To Live is To Die is also the 2nd to last track on AJFA

Bitchin’. I REALLY need to DL the leak…
I really like Death Magnetic, picked it up Friday. Great effort to put all things that was Metallica into this release. It’s still new Metallica but this works. Unfortunately it was mixed to be LOUD which sucks (just like Rush’s Vapor Trails which suffered due to the mix… My least favorite effort by them.) Anyway Death Magnetic has such a Master/Justice feel to it that it has made me interested in Metallica again. Totally skipped St Anger & didn’t like the Load releases or strings thing. I’m going to the Nassau Coliseum show in January; my first show since 91, I’ve seen them 5 times.
At first I didn’t like the length of the songs but now it’s been growing on me. The Unforgiven III I could totally do without but I’m giving it a chance; probably the best gay song since the Black release. Sadly, other the instrumental, the bass is hardly heard. I could care less about the lyrics but Hertfield does sing with an older feel to it. Kirk seems to be quite involved with the making cause he’s all over it. Some cool riffs & soloing you would expect from Kirk. The drumming makes sense with the songs but nothing outstanding (Lars is a great double bass drummer).
Playlist on my Zen:
Judas Kiss (the wah-wah change in the middle reminds me of Sabbath & the last solo you can hear a little Satriani influence)
All Nightmare Long
Broken, Beat & Scarred
That Was Just Your Life
The End of the Line
My Apocalypse
Suicide & Redemption (similar feel as from Master & Justice…it also fades at the end too.[tongue])
Demos were released:

The Day that Never Comes…I like this version much better.
( apoplectic )
No! Dear God No! Hot Topic had this disc in their store front for 5 clams last nite!!!
What is this shit???
Yeah, I know.
I paid $9.99 at Best Buy.
It’s still new Metallica but this works.
I agree. It feels like the logical follow up to Metallica.
It isn’t perfect - the lyrics are tripe and a few tracks go on pointlessly for about three minutes too long. The Unforgiven III is good but DOES NOT need that angry release bit that ruins the last couple of minutes. The Day That Never Comes is simply horrid and The Judas Kiss is far too Load for my liking. There are also few vocal hooks to be found especially in the choruses. A great deal of it is sung in an all to forgettable fashion.
Other than that - not too many complaints.
aside from all that, the biggest problem with the album is the digital clipping and absolutely no dynamics. there was hope that vinyl versions wouldn’t be as compressed, but they are the same, totally brickwalled. you can clearly hear the clipping noise i’d say at 30% of the album. this is a total disaster, because the material isn’t bad actually, but unforgiven 3 is totally forgettable, as well as couple of other tracks… but the clipping, oh man… impossible to listen in headphones. worse than animositisomina actually, but that one had different problem.
I totally agree with this. Whoever mastered it should be shot.
I was expecting to totally not even get through the cd. I mean, st anger i didn’t even WANT to finish first listen. and this cd is not bad at all. I thank all the bad reviews saying it was terrible and made me expect the worst… So i went in with low expectations… so getting a good cd… not amazing but good cd was accentuated by that low. I don’t know if i’ll be listening to this cd as much in a month or next week. but right now i’m definately feeling the cd. I don’t know if this has anything at all to do with rick rubin’s involvment or whether the would have given us the same with bob rock or whomever…
What exactly is meant by ‘clipping’?
Since I’m not qualified to discuss it, I’ll Bob Weston of Shellac answer your query:
http://www.chicagomasteringservice.com/loudness.html
and this is the short bit, but the article is great:
CLIPPING or purposefully overloading the inputs of analog to digital (A/D) converters is the latest in “loudening” technology. Some A/D converter devices can handle this questionable use better than others, but in all cases the result is that the peak of a waveform is simply lopped off. This is probably the most dubious way to remove the dynamics from music…certainly the most ear-fatigue-inducing way to get things loud.
Check this out!
“The End Of The Line”
jesus!!! that’s TERRIBLE.
haven’t heard the album, but the slight praise you guys are giving it makes me want to give it a listen, maybe. I’m one of those 91 and before Metallica is the only worthy Metallica people
Jupitreas: GODDAMN. Since when did Metallica become Merzbow?
