Metallica!

“I don’t know — in a way, yes, and in a way, no,” he told MTV News last week. “The last thing I want is someone to think, ‘Oh, they had to go back to Puppets because that was the best album, and they’re doing it because we want it.’ If we start writing songs for our fans, something’s gone wrong. The fans may think they know best, but hey, I’m the armchair quarterback when I’m watching my team too. At the end of the day, we have to write it because we love it and it’s coming from our heart. That’s why people connect with it. If you start doing it for the fans, you’ve lost the plot.”

Whatever you say, James.
Just like George Lucas put less Jar Jar Binks in his next two Star Wars movies because that was the plan all along and not because everyone hated the character.

At least Al didn’t have to worry about this. He will never have to say:

‘I went back to good music because that’s what the fans asked for’

Smart fish.

In other words “we made another shitty record, and fuck you if you don’t like it”

I do have high hopes for the release & the tour!

In other words “we made another shitty record, and fuck you if you don’t like it”

Exactly.

I’m guessing ‘Death Magnetic’ isn’t going to be exactly what was hoped for.

For a straight forward metal band like Metallica, to say to do it for the fans is to “lose the plot” is complete nonsense. For very popular, touring bands like these guys, its daft to think that what they are doing is not influenced by the fans. James , the musical maestro that he is, should not bite the hand…

Whether the album sucks or not metallica is absolutely amazing live. They can really carry a show to a new plateau. I’ve seen them on every us tour since load came out and i’ve never been dissapointed even though i may not have been particularly fond of some of the material on their post black cds.

Awwww fuck yeah, G.
Metallica with Down

Hope the North American tour goes the same way.

Looks like AZ gets the opening date, which means we get all the fuck-ups and problems:

NEW YORK - Metallica will begin an extensive fall/winter arena tour Oct. 21 in Glendale, Ariz., in support of its new album, “Death Magnetic.” The Sword will open all dates, with Lamb of God, Down and Machine Head joining the bill on separate legs.

Members of Metallica’s Met Club and Mission: Metallica Platinum organizations will get first dibs on tickets, with on-sale dates to be announced. The full itinerary can be found on Metallica.com.

“Death Magnetic” is due Sept. 12. The first single, “The Day That Never Comes,” will hit radio before the end of August.

In other Metallica news, the group will host its own show, “Mandatory Metallica,” on XM Sirius beginning Aug. 16. The program, which will run through Sept. 30, will feature non-stop Metallica music plus interviews conducted by band members with members of Linkin Park, Slipknot, Disturbed, Guns N’ Roses and Mastodon, among others.

lamb of god pulled out to finish their new album instead

aw cheap. No Ontario or Quebec dates.

Bastards.

The Sword tho? Fuggin hate all that trendy box framed glasses and skinny jeans hipster metal. The day I sit thru a Sowrd set is the day Bush receives a Nobel prize for Truthiness.
Ever heard about stoner? Ever heard about the mighty band Sleep, whose members play now in High On Fire and OM? The first of The Sword albums sounded very close to Sleep (not as good I must admit but very interesting). So nothing to do with trendy metal…

well at least that hipster band wolfmother who was heralded as the new sabbath wised up and broke up.
they got a great interview with mike patton talking about them sucking at a lollapalooza a few years back, on youtube for those interested.

I enjoy Patton’s work a lot and did find the video funny (saw it before):

I don’t like wolfmother (though I can see why older metalheads would) but when Patton asks “What year are we in?”, it’s a bit odd as at the beginning of the clip he talks about doing a record of 60’s Italian music… so go figure… I think he’s just mucking around.

I never cared too much for High on Fire, Om, Sleep et al. Matt Pike really doesn’t do too much for me.

As for desert or stoner rock…it’s ok I suppose.

Monster Magnet, Kyuss, COC , QOTSA,…are fairly decent.

Sword seem a little too xerox of all the other hipster douche bands who use god awful art nouveau on their posters, and are heralded as Sabbath reborn. When the fuck did Sabbath leave? They’re on tour right now and have a new album on the way fer chrissakes!!!

The Sword are Sabbath minus genitalia.

The Sword’s art on Age of Winters was done by the guy from …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead.

and, COC is stoner/desert rock? no, sir. Hardcore punk and then they re-tooled their line-up and took a much more metal line approach, only to slow down to a 70’s rock sound. They just did a new ‘angry’ LP, with a lot more of the old punk/metal influence. T’was a bit re-hashed maybe…

“I don’t like wolfmother (though I can see why older metalheads would)”

My old bass player is totally into them.

I really do like COC’s stoner rock stuff quite a bit actually but Rio Grande Blood kicks their ass.

I think anyone who agreed with my statement may be on other types of drugs, other than weed…

Fucken-A - Deliverance by COC is a stoner rock classic! If you can set aside your doryphore agita for 2 seconds - you would realize this and give into it with herbal induced glee. It is a whimdiddle of trippin’ trip.

Tried and tried to get into this band…but the whole ‘Southern Rock’ vibe thingy just does not float my boat. Too many ‘whoah yeeeahs’ for my liking.

I did hear that the bassist from C.O.C tried out for the vacancy in Metallica left by J Newstead. That would have been interesting.
