That having been said, it’s a pretty good album. Reminds me very much of “…And Justice For All.” Lots of time signature changes, killer riffing, and bleak lyrical subject matter. It’s certainly their best outing since “Justice,” that much is for sure.
yeah there’s that, but the half of the album is just borders on being annoying, like the whole “unforgiven III” and “the day that never comes” tracks. songs are too long in some places - the thing that “justice” also had, but justice wasn’t so much boring in places… in justice the riffs felt being together, while in “death magnetic” sometimes i get the feeling that the song is actually a medley that was put together hastily. the drum production reminds me of recent two slipknot albums, and whole thing clips insanely, then again, it’s loudness war. but the half of the album is surprisingly pretty god. they should’ve condense it to approximately 55 minutes though!
I was hopeful, then hugely doubting it would be even listenable. In the end it’s actually surprised me at first glance. It does seem to offer a bit of the re-hash thrash + black-era mix which i expected but actually leaning more to the thrash. I need to give it a few proper spins, but seems okay? It’s gotten both the ‘fucking sucks/fucking rules’ reviews most places I bother with. TBH it’s better on one spin than TLS. Altho both albums would benefit from someone with the balls to say ‘just edit this bit down a little’. Not everyone can do ‘epic’ track lenghts well, and the Met’s been outta practice awhile.
A decidedly NON-Final 8.5/10 right now. I suspect it’ll slip lower, but the opening song gave me AJFA chills.

I’m not ready to give a track-by-track (one spin), but it’s my favorite since Justice. This is is the Metallica I grew up listening to. The ‘trash cans’ only show up once, maybe twice, but they’re better mixed this time. The lyrics…yeah, nothing amazing, but after listening to four years of Bush-this, Cheyney-that, it’s nice to hear some lyrics that can be open for interpretation (or just ignored). The opening track is pretty awesome. I think it’s fitting they slapped the old logo on this album. They really could’ve kept doing this stuff after Justice. Anyway, not the greatest album ever, but I think it’s their first solid effort in a long time.
Definitely have to spin it some more.

And I kind of…KIND OF agree with what he’s saying there. But I probably wouldn’t have been that harsh.
I do agree with the criticism of James’ lyrics being ‘toilet grade’ and ‘embarrassingly personal’ though. They definitely bring the album down a notch…or two. Especially the ‘this I swear, this I swear, THIS…I SWEEEAAAAARRRR’ rubbish off the first single.

It’s really not that bad of an album. It is indeed the best stuff they have done in ages.

the review is overly harsh, It’s pitchfork - there’s no WAY they can give it a positive review. I was expecting a famous 0.1 review myself. But seeing them give it a 4, means it’s really about an 8. It’s still gonna be way too ‘cool’ to bash them all the time - rightly so I might say. Friggin Load->St. Anger + Some Kind of Retards did destroy their cred. But the album is clearly the best thing since AJFA.
so it’s time for metallica to go Aerosmith and go for some songwriters to do the work for them, since they forgot how to write a song
I don’t like wolfmother (though I can see why older metalheads would) but when Patton asks “What year are we in?”, it’s a bit odd as at the beginning of the clip he talks about doing a record of 60’s Italian music… so go figure… I think he’s just mucking around.
Actually that ended up just being a cover song on an Italian performer’s record. Roy Pati I believe.
After quite a few listens, I’m wondering if Lars is actually playing in this. Some of the drumming is quite intense.

I swear, the sunglasses that women have been wearing the past several years are just hideous. The bigger the frames, the uglier…they actually think that looks good? The ‘small glasses’ fad in the early 90’s needs to come back. It’s like the Disco era has collided with the early 80’s. Look at me, becoming curmudgeonly about fashion in my old age.
Actually, what James is wearing looks pretty comfy. I looked just like that (minus the goatee) back in…89! Funny to see those plaid shorts come back around. I think my whole wardrobe came from Miller’s Outpost back then.
