Anyone heard Hardwired To Self Destruct yet? It leaked over the weekend but i’m just getting a chance to listen to it now. I know lots of you probably think Metallica are absolute shite, but i enjoy them a lot while also hating a few of their albums and the members themselves.
I’m surprised at how much i’m enjoying it 4 songs in. It’s no Master of Puppets but it’s made me smile. I thought it’s be excruciating crap but it’s actually been good so far.
i liked two songs, which were hardwired and spit out the bone. the rest seemed like a blur of “fat”, and it’s all so sterile. it’s all down to personal taste of course, but most of songs seemed same-y to me.
if this album was made by some other band - nobody would care much about it and would just say “meh”.
i have a question though, the announcement for the album said that it’s a double album with over 90 minutes of new music. the result i see 37 + 40 minutes over two cds, which is 77 total. i remember in 1996 they had load lasting 78:59 and it was callled a single album, kind same for reload which was 75 mins.
it just seems like a waste of packaging and materials, in this case.

Haha, i hadn’t even noticed, that does seem like a total waste. I ordered a triple CD version, i think it’s got demos and lives stuff or something.

the bonus cd has lords of summer (that was amazing track, right), ronnie james dio medley - i’m guessing it’s a dio/rainbow cover/tribute, and two covers (deep purple and iron maiden), the rest is just live recordings, of mostly very early songs, but the performances are from 2016.
i mean i’m not complaining, just want to understand how this is even a double album. i guess if they wanna call it that, so it will be.
The Ronnie Rising Medley is amazing. I also thought the whole album was pretty amazing, esp “Spit Out The Bone.” Surprised. As for the 2 CD debacle, I think it’s more expensive to print on longer CDs, and so they chose instead the cheaper route (i.e. printing on two shorter CDs costs less than printing on 1 long CD). More Armani suits that way.

in fact, i think it’s the other way, the more cds in the packaging, the higher the album retail price for a physical copy. shrug
I agree…the 2cd thing is a marketing tool. More money for Metallica. Spit Out The Bone does stand out for me too. Mixed feelings for a first listen. Not bad but not awesome either. More listens need to sink in.
