Metallica - new album leaked

max you can fit into audio cd is 78:59, you can shove a little bit more, but it will be prone to skipping

cd1+cd2 is 77 minutes, so could easily be fit there.

Pretty sure they are doing it for contractual reasons. Two CDs equals two records, which of course can bite you in the ass if it doesn’t sell well…for example, if it sells four million copies, it only counts as 2 million.

They’re not under contract any more. This CD was put out by their own label (Blackened).

yeah, i guess they can now do whatever they want.

the sound of album (at least the CD version) is not as bad as Death Magnetic was, but it’s still very bad. drums are farting and almost clipping, and they dominate the mix so bad, they are so in your face. the bass guitar is also too low in the mix.

and i’ve went and checked st anger sound as well, had a good laugh (at it’s time i didnt like the songs i heard so i kinda ignored it. the companion movie was something else though).

i mean, these guys, being professional musicians, they have professional techs and engineers and they get good producers, they use super expensive equipment and studios with tons of processing power and capabilities, they have all these guitars and amps in their own collectoins

and the resulting sound is just shit! generic and sterile. which then gets overcompressed to the max.

i mean, ride the lightning for example has much better and interesting sound (sound, not comparing the music/lyrics) than anything they did since 2000.

recently i saw somewhere reports that Kirk is a bit bummed out (i think he politely called it “bittersweet”) that he was kinda excluded from the songwriting, or that his ideas weren’t used for this album.

I pretty much agree with this.

This new album isn’t bad though, definitely sounds like classic Metallica, and James does a good enough job of emulating that old vocal style. The songs aren’t quite as epic though.

You know what’s missing? Until they shit the bed with “Load” and “Reload,” Hetfield injected just enough melodic pop in with the metal to make the songs total ear-worms. Yeah, it’s thrash, but its across-the-board popularity also indicates that the seminal stuff was melodic enough to be memorable.

The new album, however, has almost none of that. It seems like they’ve taken themselves back to the “heavy metal is an arms race” late 80s. Frankly, the new album reminds me of “…And Justice,” if that album hadn’t been cruelly stripped of its bass.

I like this album, I’ve gone on record as praising it, and I’m not shitting on that. But after repeat listens, I’ve found disc 2 (excepting “Spit Out The Bone”) to be mostly background music.

I wonder how the more complicated stuff is going to fly in concert. I remember reading Hetfield’s memories of playing the complicated songs from “Justice” right after the album came out, and the crowd was just like, “uh, this is boring.” That’s why many of the songs from “Justice” were left off their live repertoire for years.

They’ve done a lot of silly things, but that Mayhem parody was fucking unforgivable.
