Metallica And Lou Reed - Lulu

Eh…I don’t know about this.

That was horrible.

Lou Reed and Metallica. Two great tastes that do NOT taste great together.

To be perfectly honset though. I can’t say i’ve been a steady fan of reed’s. His work in VU is amazing, and so are his first couole solo albums (transformer, berlin). The rest…not so much. These days, he just rambles on like a senile old-man. I don’t think he has any more good albums left in him. This stuff is just him grasping to stay relevant. Same goes for metallica.

That didn’t sound too bad at all. The lyrics sound, for all the world, like Swans!!

I thought only Lou was doing vocals for this - but I hear James in there.

i think james will be taking bits and pieces… obviously haha.

but i actually like this, though it is clear fromt he sample that this is an album (much like any of the early to mid skinny puppy albums) that you cant hear a snippit of, you NEED to hear the whole song from start to finish…

I predict lots of extended Hammett blues solos.

Flanged out basslines. Tasteless and inappropriate backup vocals. Repetition. Sparse arrangements but never at the expense of the “heavy”.

It’ll be the closest sounding release to the Loads and upset a lot of close minded fans even if this isn’t an album proper. Really difficult to make up my mind after this little sample but I’m as underwhelmed as everyone else.

Swans? Where did you get that comparison from? Sounds nothing like Swans. Sounds like tired Metallica, and tired Lou Reed.

I wholeheartedly concur

What we’re not hearing: “Yeah Warner Bros got us together, because we both were overdue releasing new material and budget cuts are happening.”

You ight be onto something, Noir. Some idiot intern double-booked their studio time at the same slot and instead of fixing the error, they all went in and recorded their own albums, at exactly the same time, and it sucked.

What do you mean idiot intern? Doug was a genius! He wrote the first song “Banging On A Trash Can.” for The Flaming Lips, Linken Park, and Garbage. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRTSG1vrjW8
Calling the project Hobo, with their debut title,“Flaming Garbage Park.”

metallica doesnt have a current deal (as of the time of recording, i believe they have since signed again) but they had NO contractual obligation to make an album.

and lou reed is a fucking badass who puts out music when, where, and how he wants.

they all wanted to make this album together. they believe in it, they are all passionate people , and this is something they care about. i for one am excited.

Doesn’t make it good though. He past his peak decades ago.

LISTEN IF YOU DARE.

I don’t like it. Too repetitive. Sound’s like they’re trying too hard. Just. Doesn’t. Work… for me, anyway.

fucking hell, this and morbid angel in the one year. shit year for metal.

Uggghhh!!! That was horrible. Just, completely awful. It probably wouldn’t be so bad if Lou would actually sing a bar or two instead of doing his lame ass beatnik poetry thing as if he’s some clove-smoking douchebag that wandered in on open mic night at the local Starbucks.

What a waste of studio time. Metallica could have been writing some Metallica songs instead of this dog crap. It’s funny that Newsted got pushed out for pursuing his side projects. I think they should have kept that rule implemented for the rest of them. This is totally unlistenable.

fucking hell, this and morbid angel in the one year. shit year for metal.

yeah… that morbid angel album was… weirdly bad.

but i actually am REALLY getting into this song. i love lou’s spoken/sun voice here and the horrible sadness of his words, and the swaggering riff/ vibed beat feel really powerful… and James sounds fucking deadly on this… i donno, i am actually more pumped now.

this doesnt sound like fight fire with fire, because it wasnt trying to be, this was trying to be lou reed’s musical child, with metallica’s sensibilities, and so far i think it nails it.

I don’t care whose child it is. It should have been aborted.

I am not too well versed with either of these artists, though I like selections from both.

I think that they should have gone more experimental if anything, in terms of the instrumentation and arrangement especially.

Because now it sounds like crappy Metallica with a beatnik thing over it.

If they had been more offkilter, less metal like they normally do, kind of sludgy or noise rocky, more messy, really bizarre, kind of jazzy, I dunno…it might have made more sense…

And some more effects in there like something with massive reverb…

It’s like they had to still be Metallica and he had to still be Lou so it was doomed to fail with that mentality…

But now this seems destined to become one of those albums people refer to as a huge turd and joke about in years to come. And with a title like ‘Lulu’ it doesn’t help it…

I thought ‘St. Anger’ was a bit numetal and obnoxious but definitely had some merit. I thought people went overboard criticizing it. This is way worse from the sound of things.

I hear ya, Void. I think a lot of people, even if they were skeptical, were excited to hear about Metallica and Lou Reed working together because it sounded like they were both stepping outside their respective comfort zones.

But now that we are hearing the final product it just sounds like they all stayed in their comfort zones but just happened to share a recording booth. A little more experimentation and them working a bit harder to find a new shared vibe would have done them well (or at least better than we’re hearing so far).
