Um…ok.

I guess we’re going for the “sunglasses” look.

Somewhere, somebody out there is excited. For reasons unbeknown to most of mankind.

I really don’t know what to expect.

Which is a good thing.

They could easily rest on their laurels and just lazily do Metallica by the numbers with Lou muttering over it. But I honestly doubt they’d be doing that. So… I’m interested.

Hahaha!! Nice shorts, Lou.

metallica sold out because they became interested in other music after one of the key elements fof their sound and image was tragically killed way before his time in-front of them. then they sold out because they cut their hair. and then they totally sued their fans because they were circulating an unfinished copy of a song they werent ready to release yet.

they are total loser sellouts.

/sarcasm.

i am beyond excited for this album. lou’s last efforts have been super interesting and textured in many ways. he is really coming into a different sort of… voice now that he has given up certain vices. so i am super ready to hear him on this, also, i fucking love metallica. yeah thats right. i think death magnetic was pretty good (4 KILLER songs, the rest pretty good) and i actually like St. Anger… A LOT.

so yeah, i am super excited for this…

and they are in a photo with lou reed, of course they are wearing sunglasses… he is kinda the sun-glasses-kid… you know?

Metallica Rules!

St Anger was arrrful.
Death Magnetic would’ve have been good for a thrash band… if it WASN’T Metallica.

And as for their commercial stuff… I know you were being sarcastic, but as for all those who knock it, at least they had the balls to try something different. Unlike Slayer, who just rehash the same shit (good as it may be). And some of those songs were fucking great, if you just took them for what they were; decent hard rock tunes.

Amen to that, Sickie. Fuck Slayer.

And some of those songs were fucking great, if you just took them for what they were; decent hard rock tunes.

Death Magnetic was good - albeit a little choppy and lyrically a little lazy here and there. It also includes that killer instrumental Suicide And Redemption.

Early reports regarding this recent collaboration have stated that this has worked beyond anyone’s wildest dreams.

YES!

but i donno, i REALLY liked St. Anger, and im kinda surprised more people here dont… its the angriest album i have ever heard. you can hear the guitars being beaten out of tune, the bass is this disgusting throb in the back, the drums are more cacophonous than they are drums, and the vocals pop in and out… i love that james loses his voice, cracks out of range, shrieks, and otherwise sounds like someone actually barking and shouting in comparison to someone ‘singing’. sure, a few of the songs arent all that great (my world is way too long, invisible kid is too long and a little weak) but in general, songs like the unnamed feeling, shoot me again, frantic, and the fucking monstrous all within my hands are all wonderful nuggets of anger, catharsis, and passion…

Can’t tell you, I can’t make it thru Frantic’s stupid lyrics (Fran-tic tic-toc?) and the worst sounding snare drum I’ve ever heard, so other than trying to skip around and see if the goddamn drums are terrible the whole record (they are) I’ve never listened to it.

Even brickwalled to hell, Death Magnetic was listenable at least.

The closest I ever got to St. Anger was when it was about to be released a classmate of mine informed all of us that he couldn’t wait for “Anger Street, yeeaauugh!” So I listened to some samples earlier and I thought there was something wrong with the samples sound quality (the drums sounded so wrong), so I tried different samples but they still had the same apparent defect in sound quality. Al’s drum machine isn’t so bad after all…

not really a metallica fan, but as a drummer, i actually like the sound of the snare on st anger. a nice metallic “cling” to it.

If that’s the angriest album you’ve ever heard then that’s sad. It really is. It starts off cool with Frantic (which has the awesome line “My lifestyle determines by deathstyle”) but after that it goes downhill. The drums are obnoxious and even Kirk Hammit shits on that album for not having solos. I’d much rather listen to Manson’s High End Of Low. Take that as an insult.

And the title looks more like it says Lull. Ripping off The Smashing Pumpkins isn’t very wise.

I don’t mind St. Anger too much. They wanted to do a garage-y album and they did. Fresh air after those bullshit Re/Load albums. Not really much of a black album fan either. They had a hit, and became commercial - simple as that. They lost a bassist, but that shouldn’t have RADICALLY mutated their sound.

I thought Load was ok but a big step down from Black. I only like Black now for the sake of nostalgia. That album came out when I was 5 and I was the only kindergartener who was listening to that kind of music while everyone else liked Michael Jackson and rap. But looking back on The Memory Remains with Marianne Faithful it’s really no surprise that they would work with someone like Lou Reed. The aforementioned song was dragged down with Faithful’s vox. Then Reload came out and that was horrendous. Don’t forget about that stupid ass song from Mission Impossible 2.

They lost a bassist, but that shouldn’t have RADICALLY mutated their sound.

they didnt just lose a bassist, they lost one of the most powerful and respected voices in thrash history. and they didnt ‘lose’ him, he was killed, rather brutally, in front of them at a transitional time int heir lives/careers. it makes perfect sense that they felt lost and scared after that.

and Pile,
i listen to a LOT of music, a LOT of really angry stuff too, and i will still give that crown to St. Anger, its the only time i have ever heard talented songwriters let their emotions (frustration, loathing, anger, denial) completely assault their compositions. the emotions, they passion on that album come before the songs themselves. there is more power in the down-strokes on the song All WIthin My Hands then there is in most albums entirely. i donno, i have been defending this album for years and usually i hear the same responses. ‘it is protoolsed’, ‘its too long’, ‘the drums sound bad’ blah blah. and those are all fine and dandy, because music and art is all subjective and to be found int he eye of the beholder. but really, i think people WANT to hate this album. i would even say i think its one of my favorite albums to throw on when im feeling really pissed about something i did wrong.

the album is steeped in self-loathing and regret… and i love it.

so yeah yeah, im a sub-manson fan for digging it, haha, but whatever, end of the day i still think its a beautiful piece of work.

and yeah, i am SUPER pumped to hear Lulu.

I was pointing out his barely noticeable musical contributions. The bass was so shrouded over by everything else it was almost non-existent. His death certainly effected them, but enough to the point of being radio-friendly garbage?

This could work.

Probably won’t.

But it could.

I’m definitely curious to hear this since it’s mainly a very odd combo. 70-something Lou Reed whose only had a couple good albums since his VU days and a “metal” band who lost relevancy years ago but still hangs on.

i donno, on the first three albums he really shines through on the songs, and as a writer and shape-giver for songs he left a HUGE imprint on the first 4 albums. i think after losing him the band (subconsciously maybe) didnt want to do the same thing anymore. To Live is To Die and the rest of …And Justice is really dripping with a lot of CLiff even though he wasnt there in person, but i think after that… they didnt want to be those same guys anymore. and i cant blame them.

that being said, i love the balck album, like most of load, life a few parts of re-load, but could mostly do without it…

oh, and S&M is a monster live album. haha.

S&M is actually what brought me into the fold. Great stuff. I totally disregard the stuff from the 90s though. Just doesn’t click with me at all.
