I love them and have pretty much everything they have ever done. My favourite is Blood Mountain. For me personally, they effortlessly fill the void left when Tool decided they could no longer be fucking bothered releasing music anymore. I heard that their new album harkens back to the Crack The Skye psychedelic prog sound. So two thumbs up there.
Shame I missed them last time they came to Australia.
I have a buddy who has a massive tattoo of the horse from the Remission album on his back. This guy’s room is a shrine to Tool, Metallica, Pink Floyd and Mastodon. The amount of money he’s spent on those bands is mind boggling.
Actually, try this one instead, it’s the full album with the movie they play onscreen when they play the album live [:)] If you’re a fan of Rasputin the mad monk and 1920s film you’re in for a treat. I’m seeing them live again tomorrow, really looking forward to it.
Not incredibly rare - simply one of those covers that look cool enough to display outwards on your bookshelf.
As for their music, they’ve created their own sonic footprint. Without getting too academic sounding, they went from carrying the torch of the more left field metal acts from the 90s such as Today is the Day and Neurosis to infusing their songs with classical musicianship and dynamics giving them (during the era) very favorable comparisons to early Metallica. You can hear this sound throughout Leviathan’s “Heart’s Alive” among others. For those listening to their back catalog now, their style might sound commonplace. I remember buying this CD nearly ten years ago and it rekindling my interest in metal and I’m glad it did.
Aye aye. Paul Romano is a talented guy. http://www.workhardened.com/. Seems his talents are employed by some less than wonderful acts, however if it’s putting food on his table, who’s to judge. Not pictured on the site are the inlays he did for the recent Yellow & Green Baroness album. Lovely stuff.
Just back from the show tonight, excellent stuff, they played lots of oldies and most of The Hunter. They ended with The Sparrow, which isn’t a song i ever expected to hear them play live, it was fantastic.
I love these guys! Just saw them a few weeks ago on tour - fantastic show.
They are pretty talented (in my opinion). Everyone has writing / vocal duties in the band, which keeps it interesting. They’ve gotten away from the prog rock of earlier albums and started to write shorter, more focused songs. Love the lyrics and imagery of the last two albums…
To each their own!
The opener on tour was Gojira - they were pretty intense live. I wasn’t familiar with them beforehand (I live under a rock), but their music is pretty fucking awesome.

I’ve seen them a few times now and they don’t disappoint live (except for Brent’s singing, which is terrible sometimes), the guitar action is amazing. My first exposure to them was seeing them live when Bill was out sick and Brent was playing guitar by himself. It was just stupendously good. That was on the Blood Mountain tour, i had zero interest in them before that, had tried listening to Remission and hated it, but after that show i was converted.
