music for the pretentious 40 somethings trying so desperately to still be hip even though “hip” isn’t hip anymore.
Tired boring over used riffs.
should I go on?

Mastodon are absolutely amazing. They’re one of my favourite bands ever, i wasn’t into them until i saw them live a few years ago, Bill Kelliher was out sick so Brent Hinds had to sing and play all the guitars, which he did easily, even though it’s incredibly complicated stuff. Seen them a few times since then and will also be checking them out next week in Dublin.
I do understand why people might not like them, it’s not everyone’s taste (and wasn’t mine until i was forced into seeing them), but they’re an incredible band and all of their releases are worth buying, especially Crack the Skye, which opened my mind to new styles of guitar playing i hadn’t previously considered. So, i like them, yeah.[:)]

What night are you going, Jay?
I have to double check but I think I’m going on the Thursday.
I’m there on the Wednesday night, which is a bastard because Slayer play Belfast the same night and i’m missing them to see Mastodon. I’ve seen them both a few times anyway, but i’d still like to see Slayer as well. And also, Duff McKagan’s band play Belfast that night too. I’ve never had one day where 3 concerts clash like that before.

Yeah, but that isn’t Slayer you are seeing…it’s the Kerry King band…
The was a lot of crying over The Hunter and how it wasn’t Leviathan 2, and some people even think they sold out after the first album. To those people i say “Up yours!”
My friend got me backstage at a Metallica/Mastodon show he was working at, to meet Brent and Bill, Bill was pretty quiet and didn’t stick around, but Brent was friendly, talked about how much he hates the club i first saw them playing at. He seemed particularly interested when i told him Led Zep first played Stairway to Heaven in Ulster Hall, Belfast. He seemed a good guy, although i’ve heard other times he’s fucking crazy and not at all fun to be around. He was nice to us anyway, it was cool to meet him. I told him that the first time i saw them blew my fucking mind and that i looked at guitar playing in a new way after that, and he laughed and looked embarrassed, he was so humble about his playing. I also called him “Bill” (i was so excited to meet one of my guitar heroes i called him by the wrong name, ooops) and heshouted “MY NAME IS BRENT!!” and burst out laughing. Great day, i met Jerry Cantrell that day too, also a lovely guy.
I haven’t met him, but I’m told he’s very nice. I’ve also been told he’s stupid. I guess the two aren’t mutually exclusive.
Everyone in Atlanta is no more than two degrees removed from Mastodon. You either know someone in the band, or you know someone who knows someone in the band (my two degrees - I was college friends with their former keyboard player).
I don’t know about his book smarts but his guitar playing is pure genius, that banjo-style stuff he gets up to, chicken pickin’ and all that, it’s awe-inspiring.

Fantastic!! Grmpy doesn’t like them.
OK, Grmps. You stick with um…Slash and…er Mumford and Sons and I’ll take my Mastodon and Tool.
It’s a deal.
Very much looking forward to the new one in early '14.
So far…SO FAR…they haven’t put a foot wrong.[/reply]
you do realize I’ve not heard one note of these guys?
I just pulled a typical peligro post out of my ass.

Been following them since the release of Leviathan. I still feel that’s their most cohesive album, where the concepts, artwork, songs and vision all come together. The next two are essential too.
They lost my attention with The Hunter but it’s still nothing to scoff at.

You should check out Crack the Skye or The Hunter and work backwards through the rest, i came aboard between Blood Mountain (which is just sheer guitar and drum craziness) and Crack the Skye (which is sheer drum and guitar majesty). The Hunter is maybe more accessible for a first listen. I recommend them, hope you like them.
