What’s the gist of this thing? Obviously the Americans aren’t going to change the constitution and amend their gun laws after just 'another high profile shooting? That would be crazy, right? I mean ‘the right to bear arms’ and all? We can’t take away your right to bear arms now can we? That would be unconstitutional. Shouldn’t I have the right to purchase a semi automatic sub machine gun or glock 9mm pistol if I so choose?

Gun control is an interesting problem/issue to say the least. We’ve always had guns and I’m pretty sure we always will.
The most vocal speakers on the topic are all-or-nothing folk. The NRA and other gun rights advocates basically point back to the second amendment (“the right to bear arms”) as meaning that citizens should be allowed to own and carry whatever instrument of death they wish.
But, seriously, in 1776 or whevener the constitution was originally written we had flintlock rifles, muskets, and so forth. I really don’t think Thomas Jefferson was envisioning fully-automatic assault weapons that fire armor piercing bullets at 1000 rounds a minute or bazookas designed to take down jumbo jets from 2 miles away.
I don’t own any guns, but I’m okay with people’s “right” to own a weapon or two, given that they have a clean record, no history of psychopathic illness, etc. A gun is a dangerous item that is designed to KILL PEOPLE. I have no problem with putting major restrictions on the ownership and usage of such an instrument. There’s no good reason someone needs a bunkerload of weapons, and there’s no good objection in my opinion to waiting periods, registration requirements, and a bunch of other precautions and security measures.

Funny as it may seem, I was completely obsessed with guns at one stage and pretty much still am. Why? Well, who the hell hasn’t played a shoot em up at one point in their life?
Not so much that I wanna go out shooting Bambi, or Sarah Palin… but there is something to be said for the rush associated with hearing it discharge and seeing it smash into something.
Still, I could never bring myself to go hunting, let alone shoot in another living thing’s direction, and with all this considered, I reckon virtually outlawing guns in Australia was one of the best things that ever happened. Besides, I’d never get a gun license anyway, because I’ve got a temper like there’s no tomorrow and I think that’s half the problem. You’ve got a deadly weapon, combined with temptation, with any extreme emotion, at any given instant… bad shit’s bound to happen.
I think guns are awesome. I go shooting with a group of guys every now and then (skeet and trap shooting, mostly 12 gauge). And I’ve shot handguns and assault rifles as well. Yes, the rush is incredible. It’s a total guy thing. Playing with something so deadly and destructive. Whether I’m pumping lead into an orange clay “pigeon” or blasting the crap out of an old TV or something it is just great fun.
But the psychotic and or idiotic minority (yes, it is a very small portion of the total gun-owning population) make for some really tragic accidents and incidents. Whether it be some schmuck that amasses these guns for the strict intent of mowing down a bunch of innocents or whether it’s just some goon who is too stupid to properly lock up his gun and leaves it for his children (trust me, if you have a gun in the house, they WILL find it) to accidentally shoot themselves with these jerks just ruin it for everyone.
I’m totally fine with losing the privilege of killing a can or two if we can pass some regulations or legislations that would reduce these other more tragic incidents.
Joking aside, everyone should have the right to bear arms. In situations like this it would be wise to beef up security up the ass. Metal detectors would work wonders… basically it should resemble an airport screening station. This meet n greet thing was held at a supermarket for christ’s sake!

one thing these guns enthusiasts forget about in the second amendment is that the point of the 2nd amendment was for a well regulated militia. We have a well regulated Militia, it’s called the armed forces, Not only that it’s written that the point of the militia id to have soldier training, I doubt very many of these retards have had any kind of weapons training.

so that’s like 3-4 in the past past year and a half that have went fucking ape crazy. one crashed his plane into the Texas fed building, one got busted before he could actually kill someone with shotguns grenades and shit in his truck and a list of “people to kill” which was pretty much Glenn Beck’s hate list. that planned parent hood Doctor was killed at Bill O’rielly’s urging…
Nothing ever happens based on this shit. We’re about to go into Civil war, I’m afraid. had to take my Obama sticker off my truck cause people kept throwing shit at my truck on the free way… Spitting as they went buy throwing cigarettes, soda cans etc…

being british i think the US public would be better off if firearms were banned. it’s not going to stop the absolute nutters from getting them and using them, after all we still have a gun problem here, but nothing on the scale of the US, but it will stop the majority of gun crime. how could it not?

It’s not guns. Violent crime in the US is actually down about 50% in the last 80 years…and because of a spike in the 70’s and 80’s is down almost 70% since 1993.
It’s difficult to apply the same reasons, and therefore rights, to gun ownership to over 300M citizens. Should there be restrictions? Absolutely, but the 2nd Amendment isn’t going anywhere.
I’m glad I can own a gun to protect me from people who are gun-nuts.

i’m pretty divided on this issue…the way i see it, the “right to bear arms” (hilarious picture btw) was meant to protect oneself against government tyranny/oppression…which sounds good to me, but it has NO place in normal everyday life.

Lard I also would prefer not to live in a Police state where you have to be patted down airport style to go to the grocery store. I just know what is to be done, banning guns is probably too drastic… I find it funny (sad funny) that this happened in Arizona considering Arizona officials were yammering on and on about how Safe Arizona is because they have the “you can wear your side arm in public Law” or whatever the hell it was.

If I lived in Arizona I would wear a gun everywhere I went. I would have multiple guns to accessorize my best outfits. My wife would leave me, but at least I’d have my guns.
