Marilyn Manson + Twiggy live w/The Doors

Yes, it actually happened!

Marilyn Manson headlined the Sunset Strip Music Festival last night which was honouring The Doors this year.
Towards the end of Marilyn Manson’s set they were joined on stage by Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek of The Doors and they performed 3 songs together, “People Are Strange”, “Love Me Two Times” and “Five to One”

I can already tell this thread is a prongs classic in the making. It has all the right ingredients…

How come he looks skinny again?

Slurring your words much Mr. Manson?

How come he looks skinny again?
Late,
grmpysmrf

He was never really “fat” he is just dumpy from drinking constantly and from certain angles can be made to look fatter than he is…His chin is gone and he’s got a beer gut but he’s hardly “fat” in fact is still slimmer than the average American or Prongs poster for that matter…lol

It’s funny how much attention his weight is getting from a message board of “serious rock fans” though, more like 16 year old girls.

“OMG AL’s dreadzzz are fake LOLzzz”
“zzzz oh my goth Manson is like TOTALLY chunky now”

My own feedback is that at this point I don’t even know what to think about Manson. He’s like a completely different person than he was 94 to 2000 or so.

I sometimes love that person and identify with them, sometimes shake my head in disgust, sometimes wish he would get serious drop the booze and get his head in the game, sometimes understand and appreciate him for who is now and what he’s doing.

I never know what to think but either way I will always respect him and admire that even today he is 10x more entertaining than pretty much any rockstar I can think of.

The guy is basically batshit at this point, but in a cool way…

I think his weight is a topic for two reasons. #1 it’s always odd to see someone to go from rail thin to pudgy and #2 He’s so image conscience You wouldn’t think he’d let himself get that way.

as far as him being interesting, I’ll give you that. It’s just unfortunate for his fans that he’s more interesting that any of his music for the last 10 or so years.

And his drug use, I think, has been greatly exaggerated. If he did all of the drugs he claims to have done just in the long hard road biography he’d be dead or a fuckin’ vegetable.
My two cents.

I agree with pretty much everything you said. Regarding the weight, I think most people don’t realize that he actually got slowly progressively bigger though over the years. Also, many people are rail thin and then fill out in 30s and 40s.

Another thing to think about is that he obviously went through a midlife crisis and I think he had to give up the keeping up with the image thing in order to retain his sanity. I mean can you imagine what that was like all those years? Even just wearing a theatre contact in one eye all the time is irritating as FUCK! I think that’s why he ditched the makeup for awhile and displayed publicly this bizarre more humorous side that he used to hide. ‘High End of Low’ to me was the midlife crisis period in his career.

I think with him the weight is mainly bloating due to drinking more than anything. Still it’s pretty good considering if you look at his dad and how he looks…

Regarding the drugs, yes I agree it’s exaggerated but I know he really does drink constantly (from interviews) and do coke (from people who’ve hung out with him). I think he isolates himself between albums/tours to stay away from the party scene the only way he can, and then when on tour/album he is basically using pretty constantly.

I know he is struggling with addictions and in pain, but at the same time he is fighting and still performing when he could easily sit back and just disappear. I think he has a fire inside and it’s still not out, and I admire and identify with that having struggled with addiction myself. I can’t imagine how it was to be in the spotlight all those years and hold it together enough to do what he did. That alone deserves respect and people forget that…

Regarding his music I think his newer music is different, underrated but also certainly not as good as the great albums. But artists grow and change and there always seems to be a period where they’re on fire and then the albums after are never the same. Trent is sober and I enjoy his new work less than I do Manson’s. I though ‘High End of Low’ especially was underrated. The biggest thing is he just needs a great producer but he is in denial and wants to keep everything done DIY by his band in a home studio. It seems he’s surrounded by too many “yes men” and needs a wakeup call.

It’s hard to blame the booze entirely for the state of affairs with modern MM. I think he is a really intelligent and bizarre mind (I believe he is a real sociopath). It’s easy to dismiss him on many levels but if you look deeper, it’s more complicated.

Yes I wish he would get it together and be in top shape, releasing great music, etc. again but I also understand where he’s at now and I accept him as he is, still enjoying his studio albums but also cringing at live videos etc.

It’s the same with Ministry. I mean, yeah in a perfect world I guess Al wouldn’t have been a junkie but ‘Dark Side of the Spoon’ is my favorite album…

I’ve met his dad once, he’s a pretty funny fucker actually. I know where Manson gets his humor from, for sure.

re: weight gain, I don’t care, guy’s like 40-something. It happens.

HOWEVER

re: the Doors
I consider myself a fan of theirs, Morrison was at times a very enigmatic performer, almost Shakespearean at times, but otherwise a drunken buffoon who prided himself on being a fucking mess on stage…all of a sudden Manson performing with the Doors makes sense now in that light…

But I will never understand why they, Ray and Rob, desperately try to re-incarnate Jim through third-rate imitators on these tours of theirs. It’s really lame and fucking sad. It’s exactly what Morrison made fun of in the Sugerman book (which in turn was also made fun of in the movie) about that TV ad for Buick.
They are great talents in their own light, why they don’t put out their own music as a group (not as The Doors but just as Rob, Ray and John) is beyond me.

Yeah I agree. And in that light, Manson actually makes sense as a replacement for Morrison, probably more so than anyone else they’d over chosen to do that.

Regarding the remaining Doors though, I agree that they should have just pulled a New Order and done their own thing. It’s lame. You can never replace Morrison…

It’s like they desperately hold on to the memories instead of forging ahead. Which is even sillier when you think that all the guys in the band wrote songs, not just Morrison. The fucking bassist wrote “Light My Fire” for god sake!

Wow. That was an awful mess. Like some horrible drunken Karaoke. It was wonderfully ironic, though, when I saw the beachballs being batted back and forth.

Yes, probably like many classic Doors concerts lol

(I believe he is a real sociopath)

I could not disagree with this more. out of all the stuff I’ve read on psychopaths (1 whole book) sociopath/psychopath (they’re one and the same) want to be liked. if people like you it’s easier to manipulate them. Since Manson doesn’t seem to care if he’s liked and specifically does stuff to not be liked i would say he’s more of a misanthrope/nihilist depending on his mood.

BTW I think EMDM was his midlife crisis HEOL wasn’t that bad. still bad but no where near as bad as EMDM.
haven’t heard born villian yet I’m sure I’ll pick it up sooner or later.

not a fan of the doors so his collab with them means nothing to me.

I don’t know why so many people hate The Doors’ (or The New Doors, or The Doors of the 21st Century, or whatever they’re called) modern existence.

I’m not a big Doors fan, but I think their hiring of Ian Astbury was absolutely perfect. They give the older generation a chance to enjoy a reasonable facsimile (probably better in many cases) of what once was, and the newer generation gets a chance to see what they missed.

Ian is an incredible performer and singer and, until they extract some DNA from Jim’s corpse and clone him Jurassic Park style, is the next best thing.

I know they are in the music BUSINESS. I get why they do it. To a degree.

It’s still tacky. It’s no different than the Beach Boys or the Animals reunions…it’s actually a diss towards new fans who go out and buy those old records, to me.

The closest thing Ray M ever did that came close to embarking on a really great concept of a new band was when he was trying to get a new project together with Iggy Pop on vox. This was around 1980 or so. Probably would’ve served them all right, as Iggy’s music went to shit for a decade after that.

How so?

And it’s not just a matter of having no emotional investment in these bands. I’ve heard emphatic arguments against the Dead Kennedys playing live too (which, is actually MORE questionable since Jello is still alive). I’m a hardcore DK fan (and I love Jello too) but even that was fine by me. I’m getting to hear (yes, I went) the original songs by the guys that created and performed the songs originally (minus one very key component, but that’s their problem not mine).

I guess the Misfits is another good example (though they differ in that they’re actually creating NEW music under the name as well).

I love the Doors and the Cult an awful lot, and had no idea this happened. Holy dammit.

Ya learn something new every day. [:)]

Yeah, it’s been a while now. I wanna say maybe 2003 or 2004.

I’m not going to preview them first or anything, but here’s one (there’s a good handful of various ones on YouTube) . . .

This is AMAZING. It’s pretty cute how Ian apparently went out of his way too look just like Jim. [laugh]

I saw a Cult concert on some random channel circa this year and I an didn’t have too much in the way of hair. Had a very Al Jourgensen-type bandana instead. [:P]

HAHAHA! It’s funny you mention his hair. That was one thing that pissed me off about him circa 1995.

In the 80’s I thought Ian was so damn hot. His stage charisma was just so damn sexy and the combination of flashy moves and the longest, shiniest, most amazing jet black hair, was just magic.

Then he started some band in the mid-90’s called Romantic Lovers or something and CUT HIS HAIR. I was so pissed.

Jimmy Fallon actually does a really pretty good Morisson:

Haven’t heard the Doors with Ian. Haven’t heard Queen with Paul Rodgers yet either- what do you guys think of that one?
