The vitriol and seething anger in this thread just blows my mind. It went from a civil discussion about Manson ripping off Jodorowsky to pitchforking Voidhead. As I think it was Gunnar who pointed it out, Voidhead is actually a nice guy who doesn’t try to go all Vlad the Impaler on others. If you don’t like music or his shtick that’s fine but seriously why does everything get so personal. Oh now I remember, it’s the internet. Voidhead may like posting pictures of himself here but at least he brings Integrity… seewhatIdidthere.
Actually, mick, we’ve gone back to wondering what the hell happened to Manson.
Actually, mick, we’ve gone back to wondering what the hell happened to Manson.
Ah fuck.
I think maybe (and I’m only speculating) that some people here get jizzed off over the amount of attention void pays to Manson and the fact that he has seemingly tried to create his own Manson persona instead of doing something original. I know I’ve had private discussions with others here who say that void seems to post a new thread every time Manson so much as picks his nose. He also bombards us with “publicity” shots of himself acting like a Manson protege - all dolled up in emo/glam type gear etc.
I dunno - it doesn’t bum me out. It is a little funny sometimes. And it’s ok sometimes to poke a little fun at him. He knows (at least as far as I’m concerned) that it’s hardly personal. I think he likes the attention it brings.
Emo/glam? I wonder if I’ve just invented a new genre.
I guess I’m probably in the minority here, but I’m actually more interested in his promotional and packaging aspects of his art (including his presentation of himself) than his actual music (most of which doesn’t really do much for me).
I know he likes Manson but I don’t really follow 90% of the music discussion on this forum anyway so I didn’t notice if it was over-saturation. I’m ambivalent to most music in general and probably only discover a new band I like every 5 years or so. But it’s really not that hard to avoid threads about music or artists that I dislike or don’t care about.
Crap, I just realized this is the Manson thread and not the Voidhead thread. Let me add this then to continue on with the topic . . . .
I think Manson wants very desperately to be a timeless icon. He’s trying to regain some relevance to the pop-cultural discourse of today. But it reaks to some of us as desparate and lame. Singing with Eminem? Private labeling Absinthe? Making his pseudo snuffy S&M Jodorowsky slide shows? Whatever.
I was talking with someone the other day about Iggy Pop and we were trying to think of retarded washed up shark-jumping scenarios for him and it dawned on us . . . the dude is pure mythic legend now.
Wanna know how someone has reached such status? Come up with (or just relate something stupid they’ve already done) a dumb idea and think about how it would be perceived. If it is IMPOSSIBLE to think of something that could actually wreck the godlike status of said personality, it’s probably because s/he is already a god.
I imagined Iggy Pop at age 80 sitting in a wheelchair while he rapped over an MC Hammer Record: It still sounds badass, right? Lemmy reading children’s stories to spoiled private school kids on the White House lawn: It still sounds badass, right? What if they decided to charge $100 to witness such an event? He’d still be a god.
Al Jourgensen making a Christmas album . . . yeah, it doesn’t quite work the same, does it? And Manson trying to do dramatic poetry in his own lame video? Yeah, that sucks also. Osbournes Variety Show? Yikes!
I better get back to work. I drank way too much Dr. Pepper for breakfast.
“nothing in his life became him like the leaving IT”. Seeing him Travis Bickle the old guy was the only scene that didn’t feel like it was from another Manson clip. I’ll join the chorus and say this all feels like stuff he’s tried before but maybe directed in a more compelling way as there’s more lingering shots and thematic continuity than some of his past videos.
The song sounded effortless. Minimal verses and a chorus I’m guessing is supposed to function as catharsis, but the hooks and catchy guitar lines aren’t to be found on this. Then I remember I haven’t heard the last two Manson albums so is this considered par for the course for him now?
is this considered par for the course for him now?
I think it’s a step in a better direction if you’re askin’ me. Twiggy says it being a punk version of Mechanical fills me with hope, especially since I got a mechanical vibe from it.
Eat me drink me or what ever was fuvking horrible and high end of low was barely better than that.
Late,

Forget I asked.
I’ve already made up my mind.

that music is awesome
Totally!!! I’m looking forward to seeing this film.
Sit on it for as long as you need. Whatever tickles yer prostate!
I’ve been working feverishly all day and night since your challenge to get this thing ready to go. I did not meet my deadline but I am close…
I hope to have it up Saturday night. Either way it will be before the end of this weekend.
NOTE: I don’t if that means anything in Australia…I’m guessing you measure time and days differently…
I’m gone one day and this is what happens? This is just too sweet!
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA !!!
Sorry, I just had to do that.
For old time’s sake.
Alright well the album title has been confirmed to be ‘Born Villain’ as well, so this will be the official thread as this new era of Marilyn Manson unfolds like a trainwreck in slow motion. I will keep everyone updated!
Gotta admit though. The music itself was kinda cool though (assuming Vrenna’s still in the band). Had this Antichrist superstar/golden age vibe going. The words and the video itself? Eh… Geordie and Vrenna are no slouches, so musically I expect something decent. Last album was decent - musically, but they could have worked on direction a little more.
I think it will be decent but not fleshed out enough, as was the case with everything after ‘Golden Age of Grotesque’. Also Twiggy is a shitty guitarist and they need to get him back to bass.
The song “Born Villain” seemed to me like they have at least begun to bring back the tribal drumming thing and a heavier vibe, but they are still using drum machines/MIDI drums instead of real drums. They are still not taking the time to flesh out the songs properly, and the lyrics are still not very good (though at least this time around he’s trying to sound witty instead of wallowing in romantic depressive crap).
I know they’re not slouches but when you have an alcoholic cokehead with delusions of grandeur at the helm of the ship, there is only so much you can do.
Also Manson seems determined to write very simple and formulaic songs structurally so that limits them further.
I truly believe they will not be able to do anything great until/unless he sobers up.
I actually like it a lot more than ‘Golden age’, I think he’s quite spunky.
Album’s supposed to be the “heaviest thing ever!”, so who knows? But every time I hear them compare anything to Mechanical Animals, I get curious. The music in the video sounded nothing like it though… And I don’t really mind twiggy on guitar too much. He’s no John 5, but he’s pretty creative, and played a pretty huge part of writing the music on the older albums.
Album’s supposed to be the “heaviest thing ever!”
Totally.

Don’t hate on a brotha, dawg! I read that somewhere. Manson played a few people the album, and they claimed that. Some of the same people said that about the last one also, and we saw what came of that… I don’t really kind THEOL too much though.
This is what I think of Manson’s records…
HAHAHAHA!!!
