Marilyn Manson 'Born Villain'

Wasn’t that on Remix & Repent? I do remember there was a remix called The Not-So Beautiful People that was on another single. Some of his more recent work probably could’ve benifitted from being remixed. And no, that bonus acoustic EP on The High End Of Low doesn’t count.

it’s on there too
and I have that one too
not one of Manson’s stronger releases

The not so beautiful people is on the first single I linked.

[reply]I think the song’s awful…

yeah, sounds like it might be the sister cd to eat me drink me based on that song. I did like the little squiggley noises towards the end of the song though.

“if i was your vampire… our love would have no reflection…”

Umm I think you’re dwelling a little too much on ONE lyric. Yes, vampires have no reflection.

Other than that lyric the song is nothing like ‘EAT ME DRINK ME’ more like a ‘Golden Age of Grotesque’ track or ‘Holy Wood’, and the simplistic riff is vaguely reminiscent of ‘Portrait of an American Family’ era.

I don’t believe the “no reflection” thing is even a reference to vampires…

If you look carefully in the video he is reading from a strange Bible with reflective mirror material instead of pages…

I think the acoustic bonus versions of the ‘High End of Low’ shit were great. Because the songs on that cd were rather dull but the thing they had going was the raw emotion in the vocals and the melodic stuff was brought out more in the acoustics…

Manson has never been great with remixes (then again, what artist has?) ‘Smells Like Children’ had some really interesting stuff but in general I prefer the acoustic versions.

Yes his voice kind of sounds like a dead cat. But that’s what I love about it the raw emotion and the imperfect quality.

Also the acoustics remind of Charles Manson’s stuff…

I thought the song was bland and uninspired. It’s a single though. I haven’t liked almost a single single he’s put out since 98. The album will have moments. But usually his singles are trash now. I’ll check the album out though. Eat Me, Drink Me is the only album I can say I dislike from start to finish.

i love this tune. i’ve had this one for a while. i always loved this version, too.

I really just meant like piko said the song was bland and uninspired, much like eat me drink me.

I agree with you about the acoustic takes on the songs though. Running to the edge of the world is waaay better acoustically than the electric version. Coma white I can take either way and as far as the smells like children cd I think I put a spell on you is probably the best sng on that cd with a toss up between dance of the dope hats remix and sweet dreams coming in at #2… think I’m going to put that on right now.

I liked the lunchbox remixes.

So, Gunnar- what’s a napoleon dynamite? Is that when you’re fucking a retard and slap it in the face with a steak or what?

…that’s what I’m talking about.

Previews for the entire album are on iTunes Mexico. I truly can’t believe I’m saying this, but this sounds like it will be the best album since ‘Holy Wood’… Perhaps better than ‘Golden Age of Grotesque’.

Definitely more diverse and interesting throughout than ‘Golden Age of Grotesque’.

I am really happy about this and surprised to be honest…

That single “No Reflection”, which was in itself an improvement, is much more simplistic than the rest of the songs which actually sound really deep and fully realized in a way not heard in years from the MM camp.

I really don’t get what people see in Holy Wood. Aside from the first half, the rest just comes off like a watered down attempt at recreating Antichrist Superstar. Like GAOG more. Maybe would probably disagree with that.

I get what you mean. I love ‘Holy Wood’ but it definitely would have benefited from pruning and it had a bit of an identity crisis.

If that’s how you feel about ‘Holy Wood’ then I would say this new album may be your favorite since ‘Mechanical Animals’.

EDIT - Also I was excited because there is a lot more programming, electronics and layering. They have returned to the “industrial metal” sound.

Well, that’s good news at least.
I think Holy Wood is pretty clearly an attempt to get the goth kids back into him after putting out an album that was completely removed from their experiences. High school rejects can’t relate to a record about being a glammed up rock star that does a ton of drugs and fucks porn stars. I think the first half of it is really strong if you can handle the fact that it’s a conscious retread.

Judging from the previews, ‘Born Villain’ is going to be a release that fans of the band across eras will really enjoy because it manages to mix the style of all of MM’s prior records while still experimenting.

It sounds like they really took their time and listened through the back catalog, rediscovering what made them interesting musically as a band in the first place.

There is a lot of post-punk here, and also careful sonic layering which was the main thing missing IMO in the last 2 releases.

I am glad they’ve finally made a really solid album because they needed something after a rather lackluster decade.

that’s what holy wood seemed to me as.
and it was kind of mediocre.

I guess we’ll all see. I hope yer right void but I’m not getting my hopes up.

Then it sounds like it’ll be his best since GAOG. Didn’t really care for Holywood too much. Might take your word for it void though we disagree on EMDM and THEOL. So the song Born Villain is the same one in the video right. People on youtube have renamed the song No Reason.

EDIT: Any particular songs to look out for?

Eh, I’ll wait and see about that. The same thing was said about the last album. See how that turned out? “Heaviest thing ever!” along with “in the same vein as Antichrist Superstar” comparisons sure didn’t help. Buying into the hype of a manson album is never a good idea.

Marilyn Manson: “‘Born Villain’ is my comeback”

Article: http://loudwire.com/marilyn-manson-born-villain-is-my-comeback/

The new single isn’t bad at all… Haven’t gotten a MM album since Mechanical Animals and then the Greatest Hits set. I remember loving the song “The Nobodies” from the Hits. He have anything else that catchy? That and “Cryptorchid” are the two songs that most resonate with me (I know, an odd combo of favorites).

Hmmm…songs similar to “The Nobodies”? I would check out “Coma White” for sure, which I just looked and found is oddly left out of the greatest hits album…

“Lamb of God” from ‘Holy Wood’ also springs to mind, a fucking beautiful song and one of my favorites. Probably the most similar he’s done to “The Nobodies” now that I think of it…it’s off the same album after all. :

Regarding “Cryptorchid”, it’s pretty much one of a kind in his catalog…It’s very experimental, and it’s the only song written primarily by the ex-keyboardist Madonna Wayne Gacy aka Pogo.

You might want to check out the song “GodEatGod” from ‘Holy Wood’ :

Cool, just got those you recommended, thank you!

Godeatgod is great and so is Lamb of God. I really only want a few dozen MM songs but these are just the sort of MM I want.

I also dug out some of the other Manson stuff I have and have to say that “Down in the Park” is a great cover–he really slays it there! It’s an oft covered song but I think his is the best cover I’ve heard of it.

Also think Reznor’s remix of “Get Your Gunn” is probably the most “Ministry” that either Reznor or MM have ever sounded and I dig it. I remember buying that single right when it came out, liked the remixes but was really disappointed by the album itself once it dropped.
