The riots aren’t “UK”…they’re English. As far as I know there has been no rioting in Wales and Northern Ireland…there has definately been none in Scotland.

It is happening in America, just on a much, much smaller scale. US authorities have also had more room to work with confronting/punishing minors than England does. Also, it’s not connected to “corporate greed.” I suppose you could argue that it’s a trickle-down effect of larger politics, but that would really be stretching logic and ignoring a lot of other factors along the way.

I hate when people try to justify thug behavior or attach some political rational to it. This London crap initially started because of some incident where a guy was shot by the cops. I don’t know all the facts about the case, but I would guess that some people (or MANY people) have some very legitimate concerns or grievances with the police or leadership.
That shouldn’t translate to burning down your city and trashing every bodega and setting cars on fire, though.
Same thing happened here in LA 20 years ago. A bunch of jackasses used an incident as supposed justification or reason to destroy the city, loot stores, and beat innocent people. If you think that’s some sort of revolution against the tyranny of the corporate overlords and blue-blood money holders . . . Wow! You couldn’t be more wrong.
Wanna know who gets screwed the worst in situations like this? The people that you supposedly champion, Grumps. Struggling average Joes and Janes that are scraping by to keep that liquor store open so they can feed their kids. And middle class blokes and small business owners . . . All of whom take stuff like this as a death blow.
Richie Rich and Daddy Warbucks have all the money they can handle and are well protected with every insurance you can imagine. Sony won’t tell you this, but there’s probably just as many execs smiling that they can get reimbursed instead of having to unload all those copies of Last Sucker or Brokencyde or whatever crap was in the warehouse via sales channels.
So, preach on about the eternal battle of good versus evil, poor versus rich, republicans versus democrats . . . . But please do not imply that there is any noble ideological concern behind these hordes of savage animal dickheads.

Regarding the riots and looters, what many people are failing to understand is that most of the rioters/looters are mid-late teens who appear to have no concept of responsibility or consequences and cannot discern between who might be deserving of having their feathers ruffled (white collar crooks) and who’s not; they’re tearing shit up and robbing what they can because they can, it’s a thrill and there’s a mob mentality to it.
Unfortunately many “left” commentators straight away jumped to grand overarching reasons as to why the yobs did what they did, as if somehow to mitigate it. All this fairy crap about “these kids are angry and want to be heard”… well that about sums up most kids, and most kids don’t go picking on innocent people and burning their shops down. There’s loads of interviews on youtube and news media where the rioters/looters give their “reasons” and they are invariably about causing mayhem just for the fuck of it, coupled with breathtaking ignorance of the consequences of their actions.
Now I have no time for the Tory ponces or the cops and I’m not surprised that Cameron looks like potato when he tries to smooth it all out, but the yobs are yobs. They’ll do this shit at any chance they get, it’s just craic to them. Blaming it on the consequences of the underclass doesn’t work because there are many from that kind of upbringing who don’t act like that and can make something positive of their lives. Bad parenting and no social outlets for teenagers can probably be attributed as causes to some of the yobs.
There’s nothing political about the riots and there’s no agenda, no goals. So they shouldn’t be treated as political activists the way some commentators seems to think they should. Diverting the issue to the other type of criminals (bankers and what not) who’ve got away with their crimes is not the answer nor is it that relevant. The truth about the London riots shouldn’t be ignored just because there’s a bunch of suited criminals still walking the streets.

I wasn’t suggesting that innocent people need to be shot and beaten like reginald denny. I was suggesting that the folk of the usa rise up and perhaps get violent against opression not against each other (as they most often do in riots)
I’m not familiar with the london riots. I haven’t been following the story. I don’t know any details behind any of this. So I don’t know the cause or even if its ceasing…
But you make a good point about insurance kicking in about lost inventory. That may as well be massive sale that’s bought in bulk!
This is why I usually type long winded rants on subjects like this so I’m not misinterpreted. When I keep it short it comes out wrong.

i believe that a lot of these looters, rioters were in for the joy ride because they have nothing better to do. this isn’t punk rock. it’s about having no parent/parents to talk to in an overcrowded, multi-cultural society, where kids have education (maybe) and no grounding or support to get the hell out. okay. it IS punk rock. i guess the difference is that now there really is a finite number of opportunities and it’s possibly getting more difficult
to chuck it all and go on the dole.just me sayin’.
