Firstly, I trust any Londoners on this forum are fine - I certainly hope everyone is fine as are their relatives and friends.

Now my rant…well more like an observation on how the mainstream media in the US sensationalize these type of events:

They’re all like that. I mean the headline up there in huge BLOCK LETTERS is a bit over the top isn’t it? Dramatic to say the least. It isn’t necessary… We must all LIVE IN FEAR.

Compare that to the BBC:

You know…just normal…hehe. Same with the Guardian and other papers…

Good observation Afra. Although the British government certainly has it’s flaws, it seems like the British mainstream media is a little more willing to challenge the government and not just monger fear like here in the states.

Yeah and now the pressure is off Bush too regarding the environmental issues on which he was not budging. Now, none of that in the papers.

The American media also likes to make headlines appear like movie titles, such as “AMERICA UNDER ATTACK”, “THE HUNT FOR SADAAM”, and most recently, “LONDON TERROR”, all of which are displayed at the bottom of the tv screen in bold letters. Just like the image Afra posted, it seems like no matter how grave the situation, the media doesn’t forget sensationalize the whole thing, just for dramatic effect.

Then they go post a field reporter next to Ground Zero, so they can make it all about the U.S. again. Don’t get me wrong, I was affected by 9-11 like millions of other people, but it felt like Ground Zero was merely a prop to enhance their coverage of the London news. That just didn’t sit right with me.

Of course the Brits have more experience with terrorism than we do (IRA, etc)–so naturally they are more low-key about it and don’t lapse into histrionics as the US press is prone to do…

It isn’t about left or right, or any political orientation.

I was pointing out how dramatic the mainstream US media usually is when it comes to these things, as compared to, say, mainstream British media. My point is just that: I see the media shoving fear down people’s throats here in the US, and it works.

People of the left also don’t lay off 25,000 employees so their stock can go up a quarter of a point.
