best gig of the year: MAYHEM

worst gig of the year: Stephen O’Malley, sucked on so many fucking levels

REVEREND FUCKING KRISS HADESSSSSSSSSS!!!

I’d better see all your melbourne cunts down here for this one… [laugh][;)]

Let me guess - Stephen stood at the back of the stage and moodily dismissed the crowd with his ‘Pitchfork.com loves everything I do so I must be uber cool’ stance?

I’ll bet he spends up to an hour each day pinching himself and repeating the words ‘I am Stephen O’Malley. I can’t believe it. I am actually THE Stephen O’Malley’ over and over.

I am going to turn up to this gig dressed like Derryn Hinch and berate the gig goers for their appalling lack of moral fibre and anti social etiquette.

Saw Sparky Quano play a tiny litte dive in Long Beach last night. He’s from Japan, plays guitars through lots of pedals and was a ton of fun to listen to and watch! If he hits your town, he’s well worth checking out.

He’s also a friend of a friend so we got to hang out in LB before, running around taking pictures, eating nachos and having a generally great time. The only downer is that the club did no promotion so the show was sparsely attended. Such is life for the touring musician…

Nice Nice / Jonas Reinhardt / Trans Am at Spaceland last night.

Great show! Nice Nice were on first and they blew my mind. 3 songs, 40 minutes and it sounded like Neu!/Harmonia style kraut but with modern equipment and outlook. It was a two piece and the drummer used an amazing blend of electronic and analog kit. I downloaded an album by them last night but haven’t had the chance to listen. Super good.

Jonas Reinhardt was a four-piece and they too had a kraut-y sound, though for them there was a lot more funk to it. Lovely rocking-out, danceable space kraut funk. A truly amazing set!

Trans Am were quite good but my friends were all pretty fried after several hours of dancing so we left 3-4 songs in. Honestly though, as good as they were, they were blown out the water by two amazing opening bands.

After a week off from live music I’m going to Robyn tonight (the most straight up pop show I’ll have ever seen) and then Legendary Pink Dots tomorrow.

Try this on for size:

O’Malley and Ambarchi decided to book the gig with Skitz drumming… without 100% confirming it with Skitz. They assumed he’d just play at the drop of a hat.

They didn’t check to see how Skitz was doing or anything. Turns out, he was sick as a dog.

[laugh]

They got my friend Brad to fill in. He drummed with me when I played piano about a month ago. He did his best, but the other two were just totally detached and weren’t bothering to link in with him. Didn’t help they fucked up the drum sound.

With regards to turning up to the gig dressed as Derryn Hinch…

compared to what we’re all gonna be dressed like onstage, you’ll have ya work cut out for ya, [:)]

Tonight: Grinderman

Robyn is probably too poppy for many here but holy fuck the girl knows how to put on a hell of a show! The music could have been largely backing tracks but the keyboard players were actually playing most of it which made the songs sound different in a good way from the studio version. She’s tiny too, which I didn’t expect and danced like a maniac. Very fun show.

hmm this year I’ve seen:

Swans
Animal Collective
Black Dice
Skinny Puppy
BILE
Nitzer Ebb
Sightings
AIDS Wolf
Sunn 0)))
Throbbing Gristle
Liturgy
Liars

and way more I will post as they come to mind…

Tonight: Grinderman

Tell us what this is like!

Tonight: Grinderman

Yeah, bit envious on that one!

After seeing Void’s mention of SunnO))) I was going to post about how that’s another example of something I “just don’t get”. I was thinking of Merzbow and Masonna and figured, since I’d already seen some Merzbow clips and wasn’t impressed, I’d give Masonna a click and see if it registered the same.

It’s still not music I need to listen to in my car or anything.

But this . . . . THIS I GET. The live performances are explosively fantastic.

The Legendary Pink Dots put on a really great show as a three piece. I’ve seen them three times and this was probably my favorite of the three. It helped that the sound was amazing and it was at a smaller club in Costa Mesa, so a very intimate environment. The noise jams transcended time and space and Edward Ka-spel is a hero of mine!

So good.

Best show I’ve seen all year:

Zoroaster, Dark Castle, Black Tusk.

Looking forward to all of 'em again.

Just bought Neubauten tix, pretty excited.

Totally agreed.

I never liked listening to ‘noise’ at home. I only do if it’s really trippy, or sounds great stoned, or they’ve at least put some effort into trippy channel shifting, studio tricks, etc etc etc.

Live though… totally different story. I reckon I’ve spent more time listening to music live than sitting at home or in the car listening to it, purely because that’s what I’m into and it’s only fully appreciated in a live setting. Better yet, if you’re really into it, it’s a great way to learn how to actually get those sounds or at least try and replicate them with your own purposes.

Just got done seeing Unsane and they rawwwwwwked.

Skatalites are playing here in Edinburgh on Saturday night so I’m tempted to catch them again as they’re always amazing and the crowd always has such a ball with those old tunes…the only thing stopping me is the fact I have to go through to Glasgow the next day to see Shrinebuilder. Two gigs in two nights this close to Christmas is a bit extravagant.

Color not so excited now that the tour’s cancelled. Ah well, Atlas Sound on Friday - so that should be a good consolation prize.
