Live Music

Here’s a thread to talk about live shows that you’re going to or have gone to that don’t warrant a thread on their own.

I saw Sleigh Bells last night in a small club in Costa Mesa. The club was sold out and oversold the show so the place was way packed, which was a bummer.

The first opening band sounded like Interpol and were pretty good.

The next band up were sloppy as they entered stage, pissed off the sound guy by not really listening to what he asked for during soundcheck, looked completely slovenly and then belted out some nice distorted Jesus & Mary Chain style rock. What impressed me most about them was that they didn’t once mention their band name (something no one does when they’re opening for a “big-ish” band.

Next was PICTUREPLANE, a dude from Denver that the girl I went with was friends with. He was really good, I’ve been digging his song “Goth Star” for over a year now and he was great to hear live. My favorite of the night.

After Pictureplane, my friend got claustrophobic and needed a smoke (we had been in front). So once Sleigh Bells came on we were now stuck in back, though we fought our way to the middle at one point. Sleigh Bells PA was fucked, so they didn’t play very loud which I believe is the big attraction. However the singer’s voice was great live and she had a Karen O-ish range of yelping which was a lot stronger than on the album. The set was really short and due to the packed club and shit PA, not what I’d hoped.

I saw Faust a few weeks ago and it was awesome! Great energy and dementia!

Here’s a little video from the concert that I uploaded:

I saw Killing Joke last Friday night and they kicked ass! After KJ I caught Derrick Carter who was great too.

A few nights back I caught electronic (Post Dubstep/Future Bass?) duo Mount Kimbie who release their stuff on Scuba’s awesome Hotflush Records label. Anyway I was expecting them to be good but was pleasantly surprised to discover they were friggin brilliant! They made me think that live electronic music is heading in a great direction…Mount Kimbie not only rocked the dance floor but also rocked the chin strokers…really fresh sounds indeed.

There were also two support acts before Mount Kimbie who were great as well! I’m not sure who the first lot were but the second lot were called Dam Mantle.

Mystery opening group.

HAHAHA!!! Look at the nerds with their computers on stage! I bet they just hit play on an MP3 and then surf porn while everyone gets stoned and stares at them with their jaws on the floor.

Those nerds need some hard rockin’ imaginary guitars to kick it up to a whole 'notha level.

Live in the last year:

Megadeth
ACDC
Metallica
Fudge Fingaz!

I also saw some Korean ensemble play “authentic” music on traditional instruments. It was completely unlistenable.

When people first started bringing laptops onstage I thought it would be funny to do a show where I hook one up to a screen so the audience could see what I was doing. At first I’d actually be using audio programs, but eventually I’d just let them run in the background and the audience would watch me playing solitaire.

Fudge Fingas RULES!!!

The nerds were playing where we caught Fudge Fingas actually.

The nerds were rockin some heavy duty sounds surprisingly. A few a them were rockin em-overs too.

I’m going to see Mighty Diamonds tommorow night…it shall be good times indeed.

DUBWISE!

Most recent shows:

Tool (Ford Center – OKC, OK – 6/23)

Empire of the Sun (Music Box-Fonda Theater – Hollywood, CA – 8/14)
Deftones, Baroness (Brady Theater – Tulsa, OK – 8/19)
STS9, Ghostland Observatory (AR Music Pavilion – Fayetteville, AR – 9/2)
STS9, Ghostland Observatory (River Parks Amphitheater – Tulsa, OK – 9/3)
Sleepy Sun (Bob’s – Tulsa, OK -9/21)
EOTO, Spoonfed Tribe (Granada – Dallas, TX -10/15)

Also Les Claypool, Designer Drugs and Bassnectar earlier in the year.

How were Empire of the Sun live?

Big production, huge LED screen, lasers, costumes and dancers. They performed most of their songs really well but the singer’s voice is better on the album than live. I like some of their songs and loathe others, so there were parts I was wishing would just end, but overall it was a really good time at an awesome venue. My wife thought it was really comparable to Lady Gaga live, both in performance and crowd.

A nice surprise was the opener who is a DJ from the band. DJ I.Ball. He had this chick with stars for eyes on stage sitting in a chair that everyone thought might be a mannequin until she moved after about 15 minutes or so. After that she’d make another move every few minutes or so. Entertaining for sure.

This video wasn’t taken by me, we were up front for both acts.

Next week I have Deerhunter and Trans Am on deck. I’ve been listening to the new Deerhunter a lot, so am quite excited for that and I’ve long appreciated but never seen Trans Am so, after a few weeks off the live music scene, it’s a good week ahead!

After a really shitty day at work I went to a show on a whim last night. Breathe Owl Breathe and Little Wings. Both were really great, BOB was quite whimsical in a way that would probably be too much for many here but hit the spot perfectly for me. Songs about Dragons, walking through the graveyard at night, swimming and the like. Little Wings jumped between whimsy and melancholy and was deeply resonant.

some nice gigs this summer…

Maskinen - Live in kiruna

Therapy?, Cavalera Conspiracy, Megadeath, sonic Syndicate, raised fist, Mustach, Motörhead, Meshugga, Cannibal Corpse <-- all these on the same festiavl… in my own hometown =)

Just got back from Deerhunter and fuck me I may have a new favorite live band! I didn’t expect them to have a My Bloody Valentine/Jesus & Mary Chain feedback sheen but they did and all their really good studio songs sounded many times better. It honestly felt like I lost time and left my body a few times during the show. Fuck it was good, I will see them anytime they ever come through town again and suggest all y’all do the same!!

This month is going to be memorable.

The lady and I just won tickets to A Perfect Circle for the 9th. Got a fair price considering the going rates right now.

Going to try and catch both Watain and Nile in the same week.

Seeing the reunited Faith No More at the Palladium followed by Einsturzende Neubauten the next night. Been wanting to see EN the whole time I’ve been into music and I can’t wait for that night especially.

As long as I get to see Zoroaster again, I’m set.

LPD 30th Anniversary Tour coming up on the 14th. Checking out Zappa Plays Zappa in December, the band is playing Apostrophe in its entirety.

Hoping to catch LPD in Costa Mesa in a few weeks. Maybe Neubauten soon after, haven’t decided. Definitely seeing Trans Am this Friday.

Trans Am? Nice. No Phoenix stop, not surprising. Short ‘tour’ as well:

04 November 2010 San Diego Casbah
05 November 2010 Los Angeles Spaceland
06 November 2010 San Francisco Rickshaw Stop
08 November 2010 Portland Mississippi Studios
09 November 2010 Seattle Chop Suey
10 November 2010 Vancouver, BC Biltmore Cabaret

I saw Wire at the Casbah back in 2002, cool venue (lots of Stone brews on tap at the time…Arrogant Bastard hangover from that one). If my job wasn’t so insane lately, I’d consider a roadie.
