Bought tix yesterday to go see Godflesh(and other bands) in Austin in June and Tim Hecker and Final earlier that same day in a fucking church!!!..
Iām guessing that Godflesh must be performing at some festival? I checked for tour dates but there were just a handful. It appears that is the only performance in the US this year. So far anyway.
I saw Godflesh in 2018??? at the El Club. Small place maybe 200 peeps. A friendās sister and family lives really close down the street from the El so we had a place to park. When the show was over she said she could clearly hear Godflesh inside her house. Really good show. Very loud and pummeling. Only time I saw them live. Iād definitely go again. Have fun!
Yeah, thanks manā¦Itās this festā¦I just bought tix for the day Godflesh plays and there are some other bands and then the thing with Broadrick opening for Tim Hecker in some churchā¦
Iāve seen Godflesh a number of timesā¦with a drummer and with the machineā¦every time has been astoundingly heavy and greatā¦you used the word ā pummelling ā which is a very apt descriptionā¦havenāt seen them since 2016 when they played in some dive down here in Miamiā¦totally looking forward to this gigā¦havenāt been to Austin in 10 years
Hilarious to me that there is a band called Sissy Spacekā¦
I took my wife to see Yo Yo Ma yesterday at tge Walt Disney Concert Hall in Downtown LA. We were in the second row and only about 15 feet away from him. He played with a Greek violinist (Leonidas Kavakos) and a Ukraine-born American pianist, Emmanuel Ax and they did two sets of Beethoven pieces. It was one of the most incredible live performances Iāve ever seen.
Being so close and seeing the intensity and emotion in their faces and bodies was incredible. I instantly became obsessed especially with the violin player, who is also a top conductor. He looked like an archetype madman conductor/virtuoso character from an old Looney Tunes cartoon or something. So cool. The three musicians had such camaraderie and chemistry and it was really a joy to hear them laugh and joke a bit before each half and encore too.
When the program was finished everyone gave a long standing ovation and after a while they came back out and Yo Yo said heād been asking John Williams to make an arrangement of the āSchindlerās Listā theme for their trio and that theyād just received it and wanted to play it for us. People were quite emotional and captivated throughout the piece, and then they ended it in such a powerful wayā¦ as it seemed it was reaching the very end, Leonidas and Yo Yo had their bows held back, and there was a pause where we thought theyād play one final note or something, but they just held for maybe 30 seconds or so, and the entire place was dead silent and it was so indescribably intense.
Anyway, Iām a pretty typical rock and roll dirtbag, and it was awesome to do something different and observe differences as well as similarities across genres/scenes. My wife and I are going to try to get to Philadelphia next year as Yo Yo will be playing with John Williams conducting. Williams is over 90, so God only knows how much longer we have. .
Check this dude out.
I was also staring at his violin yesterday while he was playing and after some more reading about the guy, I got confirmation that it is, in fact, a 300 year old Stradivarius.

Viagra Boys were absolutely outstanding. Great live band. They had the crowd WFO in about 5 seconds. Highly recommended.
Show was Thursday. I wasnāt sure it was going to happen at all or if I could make it. Wednesday night a really nasty ice storm rolled through and knocked power out all over the place. The roads were a sheet of ice and nearly impossible to drive on. To compound the situation my autoimmune disorder decided it was a brilliant time to go full on haywire and spent most of the morning puking. At this point Iām thinking Iām hosed again. I had no idea if the venue even had power. I medicated myself thoroughly and got my health situation to a semi tolerable level by early afternoon. My phone was dead so I couldnāt get a hold of the person I was planning to go to the show with. After sitting around in the cold and dark house feeling like I wanna die, I decided fuck it, Iām going and nothing is stopping me. Not my body rebelling against me. Not an ice storm. Not insanely dangerous roads. Not lack of power. I was going even if I was the only one there. I was a man on a mission, completely unstoppable. I managed to make it to my buddies house, they had no power either. After a brief discussion we decided to head to the show. I was going anyway even if he didnāt want to risk it. We couldnāt drive more than 5 mph hour so it wasnāt it like we going to die traveling or anything. It was a major white knuckle ride getting there and back though. Yikes.
We get to the venue. Show was a go as they had power. Party time. We were smoking down in the car before we went inside. Next thing I know there is a knock at the window. It was a couple of Detroitās finest who noticed the smoke wafting from the vehicle. Weed is legal here and I know you are not supposed to smoke in public or in the car. We werenāt going anywhere and it was a fucking concert after all. Everybody was smoking. What exactly did they think was going in the lot before the show? The male cop makes us get out and starts lecturing us. Iām holding the still light joint. I figured worst thing was they would confiscate for their own usage. Well, this guy is going on and on I decide I had nothing lose and started smoking right in front of them. The lady cop laughed and didnāt do a thing. The male cop at this point went into full on launch mode and started threatening this and that. We completely ignored him. Soon a crowd started gathering and they just walked a way. We never stopped smoking. After getting a really good high we went inside and got a couple drinks to celebrate our victory over the police and safe arrival. Iām not anti-police or anything but that was complete dick move on the male copās part.
The opener was a band called the Steens. I had never heard of them, they were OK but didnāt pay much attention and had a couple more drinks at the bar. After their set, I made my way up front. In a bit VB took the stage and the place exploded. They are easily one of the best live bands Iāve ever seen. Got a few looks from the kiddies. Ya know, what the flip was grandpa doing here. Well this grey beard kept up and showed those young whipper snappers. About midway through I felt something snap in my semi-healed foot. It was killing me by the end.
I sobered up by the time the show was over and basically idled our way back to my buddies place and then to my own freezing cold and dark home. I had an absolute blast. What an adventure! The next morning I realized I probably over did it by a considerable extent but JFC did I have a good time. If you get a chance, go see VB, you wonāt regret it.
I could have done without the ice storm but it does make for a better story
Power came back on late last night. Oyā¦
Hoping to catch Depeche Mode sometime in 2023. New track āGhosts Againā is good.
I THINK the only one I have on the books coming up is ALICE COOPER with Rob Zombie and Ministryā¦ but thatās not until September.
The Cure in June. Itās been nearly 2 years of misery health wise but Iām finally feeling a good bit better. Itās like Iāve been handed a bit of my life back after a fuckton of bad. I canāt wait. I mean Iām ready to grab the Agent and head to the show right now. I not entirely sure I could convince her living in my car for 3 months would be fun.
Iām hoping Songs of a Lost World drops before then. I canāt imagine what Bob is screwing around with at this point.
Just saw Depeche Mode in LA. Great show. A generous 23 songs in the set list. Remarkable that they are into their fifth decade of releasing new music and touring.
I caught the San Jose show (depeche mode). Good concert.
Fucking Skinny Puppy show down here was cancelled tonightā¦bad weather caused a leak in the venueā¦it hasnāt rained here in 2 fucking months and then the day of this show there is a god damn monsoon with flash floods and shitā¦Iām pretty bummed but might hop on a plane Sat and go see them in Ashevilleā¦playing in St Pete tomorrow but Iāve got an eventā¦oh well, end of rantā¦

Voivod were excellentā¦the old Canucks have still got itā¦Iām not a big Metallica fan but Jason Newsted came out and played 2 encores with themā¦he played with them 20 yrs agoā¦he has a place down here and his solo band is playing a gig here Sat. so I guess it was a good time for him to jump onstage with themā¦any way, great showā¦on to The Cult tomorrow nightā¦more old vetsā¦
No, the drummer does everything else but sing. Haha. Voivod rules.
