New Deftones album is quite good. I’m digging it more than Diamond Eyes.
Although, from the amount of people who had the Deftones in the bands that suck thread, I may be alone on this one.
Also; the new How To Destroy Angels album is… meh.

Seems like i’m in a minority that doesn’t see all the hype over the album. It’s good, but I don’t find it “amazing”. And yeah, the new HTDA is kinda weak.
deftones are one of my favorite bands! i’ll check it out tonight.
I’ll give it a proper listen soon. Reviews say it takes more left turns than the last one. Not sure why people are still so quick to dismiss them after over fifteen years of consistent music. Seeing the show with my girl next week and I’ll be able to weigh in then
My friends like these guys.
Personally I don’t understand what all the fuss is about.
No fuss, they are just rock n roll music with slightly better than average hooks and production. White Pony was definitely a great album, the guy who mixed/produced it did a great job and I don’t think it would’ve been as big as it was if it weren’t for that at all.
If it’s anything by them versus anyone else on the radio, I’ll hear it because I know there’s SOMETHING interesting to hear on it.

Bingo.
Though I do find it great fun to ask them if Chino Moreno’s still in a coma.

JLW, good point on the production. Always felt the rhythm section’s been spot-on in this band but in lesser hands and lesser money these guys wouldn’t sound too hot. Deftones have a few songs that make you a believer. Then they have lots that pass by with that samey feel. I can’t ever really say a Deftones song “sucks”. The effort is always there. It’s just rare that one catapults from being very good to amazing.
Whatever happened to the bassiest Chi Cheng? Last we heard he had had regained partial consciousness, having the ability to move his legs on command. And he wasn’t able to move or speak.
thanks now i’m watching the pointer sisters song from Sesame St, the “numbers song”…fantastic
Deftones are boring and annoying.
I hate their stupid emo vocals and all the rest of their stupid emo crap.
A lot of that was manifesting though, I don’t know what “emo” is but it’s classic in the fans it brings (if it’s the interpretation I gather), I remember System Of A Down dominating the airwaves at one point or another and finding it hilarious how “rockin” locals in my area found it but how silly it seemed.
Yeah, you have these anthemic rock riffs, screaming, furious drums and then…some pussy sounding verse trying to sound “deep”. Who knows who started it, it’s gone on forever but it’s no different than bands like Stryper or Ratt or whatever butt-rock at the time. Embarrassing.
Deftones do have those moments but as a whole most of their non-singles are just basic rock, nothing to set the world on fire but a decent listen. If you can grab White Pony and at this point I’m sure you can nab it for a buck used, check it out. Listen to it from a technical standpoint and you might find it decent. You could say the same thing about Hum’s “You Might Be An Astronaut” too, seriously.
White Pony is so overrated. Around The Fur and Saturday Night Wrist were the best.
haven’t listened to it yet, haven’t really had the time. i shall soon, though.
i love all the albums, but my favorite period would have to be around the fur/white pony/self titled.
chino has a “new” side band btw, if you guys haven’t heard. tis called crosses. it’s pretty good.
I’m waiting on his other project w/ the ex-Isis guys called ‘Palms’.
Does he still have Team Sleep going on?

I like them also but I wouldn’t put Saturday Night Wrist over those two at all. I like maybe half or a little over half the songs on it. IIRC I don’t even think they put a lot of thought into recording it…or maybe that was the s/t…
I agree these days I prefer Around The Fur more.
Can’t tolerate them.

Depends on what you consider consciousness. He fades in and out from what i’ve seen. At this point, I seriously doubt he’ll ever play music again. He’s made some progress, but for the most part, it’s been near minimal other than the leg movements. But he might be able to tell when someone enters the room.
And who knows about Team Sleep? Chino’s too busy with the three bands now. He says everyone’s busy. Go figure. Crosses might possibly be the closest thing to Team Sleep as we’re going to get for probably awhile…
Team Sleep was such an interesting project when it was just demos floating around the fart heap that is/was Kazaa or Soulseek, really great material.
Then I heard the official record. Ugh! I don’t know what the fuck happened between the recording of it and the production or…whatever…but it created the opposite of what sound went into a Deftones record. Something tells me if Zach Hill had more involvement with all that it might’ve been a winner.
