I never actually listened to Team Sleep but I remember Chino calling it his A Perfect Circle which made me wanna check it out.
Team Sleep was such an interesting project when it was just demos floating around the fart heap that is/was Kazaa or Soulseek, really great material.
Then I heard the official record. Ugh! I don’t know what the fuck happened between the recording of it and the production or…whatever…but it created the opposite of what sound went into a Deftones record. Something tells me if Zach Hill had more involvement with all that it might’ve been a winner.
The label got hold of them… I remember an interview about the label wanting it to be more “live band” oriented. I still like the album, but the demos are definitely better.
i love the album, and i love the demos too. especially the one with the beloved mike patton ;). i can’t believe they scrapped that track.

That’s funny, the finished tracks don’t even sound “live” [laugh]

Go tell that to Chino. In the same interview I saw, he expressed how he wasn’t very fond of the final album. And I don’t think they changed the entire album. Just a few songs. Some songs kinda sound the same.
Really sad news. My condolences to his family and friends. I cannot even imagine how they felt. He was there, but not really. Never really recovered. After four years of suffering, it’s finally over. He was even making progress too. He had the worst luck.
What a fucking bummer.
