KMFDM announce USA tour!

En Esch didn’t contribute much to some of the classics. Money was all Sascha, except for the one track Esch sang on. Nihil was a group effort from what I remember, but Esch wasn’t really on Symbols and practically gone for Adios.

Symbols had heavy contributions from Esch. He doesn’t sing on every song, no, but he’s credited with programming, drums, guitars and in general has a heavy presence on the album, more so on side two.

I’d also say get Mark Durante back. I’ve heard Joolz do a killer lead on a PIG concert during Hot Hole. I haven’t bothered giving them enough of a listen after WWIII. Speaking of WWIII, it really doesn’t stand the test of time. I’m glad I didn’t really know about KMFDM before that show. I probably would’ve been disappointed with the setlist cuz WWII took up about 90%.

WWIII draws the most parallels to Angst in the classics vs 00’s album competition. Every song is heavy on guitars, almost obnoxiously so. I revisit a song once in a while but am usually put off by the lyrics and how tuneless most of the tracks are. I like Ray’s contributions in “Revenge” the best, a great swan song for him and a very dynamic deep cut.

Only albums that he didn’t really do was Money (disputable) and Xtort (just a solo on insane). He was all over Symbols and Nihil. Prior to Money, it was pretty 50/50 between the two. Even with Deutschland (the only album Raymond contributed musically on). Esch was also on Adios. Very limited role but he’s there. Mostly backing vocals (DIY, That’s All) and did lead vocals on Bereit. Not sure if he did anything production wise, but BD probably did something. As did even guenter.

And on Money, there’s a few instances where he might have done some backing vocals (money and vogue), and possibly even some additional programming. In fact, on the money single, he contributed some drum programming.

I.do believe, no matter how downgraded he became over the years, he still hada major influence. As did Raymond.

I don’t even really consider Money a classic. It’s almost like a remix album for Naive.

Programming on “That’s All” and “Sycophant”. Both those songs are highlights on Adios for me, an album that grows more appreciable with time. Maybe the true last instance of Sascha willing to change his formula around. I can’t imagine the rote KMFDM of now abandoning guitars for more than a few songs and steering as left-field as that album gets.

To Sascha’s credit, a lot of Esch’s downgrading was either by his own actions or conflict of interest. Money could have been the best document of that era if Esch’s side wasn’t rejected. Conversely XTORT’s recording proceeded as scheduled as a disinterested Esch was busy making some Atkins $$$ and it still turned into one of the most ambitious and memorable set of songs Sascha’s produced, thanks to the great guest spots and sense of urgency I haven’t heard on ANY of the following albums.

It’s the live presence that’s missed. YouTube any clips from the 90s and observe how nonchalant Sascha is. He fills his role fine because either Esch or Watts provide that frontman energy that no good rock show should be without. Having only seen KMFDM from 02-11 it’s remarkable how less authentic they feel. Lucia is a placeholder for that same ‘frontman’ presence and does a fine job but she simply doesn’t dominate the stage and it feels disingenuous to see Sascha try to fill those shoes when prior to Watt’s dismissal he didn’t even try.

Lucia sure is hot to look at. And I would like to see Sascha do more than just stand behind a keyboard like when I saw them 9 years ago. But his greatest moment was on the BeatByBeatByBeat dvd when the Metal lookin dude got on stage and Sascha just kicked him in the ass til he got off.

thanks…but no!![pirate]

I believe En Esch missed most of the recording for Angst as well, if I’m remembering correctly. He was more of a frontman than a huge musical contributor, but the stuff he worked on was definitely better for it. He brought a lot of the funkiness and creativity while Sacha brought more of the structure. I find Money and Xtort to both be pretty flat and uninteresting. Naive, Nihil and Symbols were the peaks for me.

Naive is easily in my top 3. But I agree that that he was the sort of “frontman” in the 90s. He did contribute a decent bit on Angst though, a lot of guitar mostly, even some drums. As the years went by, he would eventually do less and less though… If only he and Sascha made up and worked together again.

If only he and Sascha made up and worked together again.

Last year’s WaxTrax! Retrospectacle would have been the best time to bury the hatchet. Proved right there Sascha’s stubbornness at pushing the current brand forward without concern for the people who helped give him the high ground to make these same decisions.

They’re not exactly J Mascis and Lou Barlow. No one’s got enough sentimentality for old KMFDM records to throw a bunch of $$ their way. Meanwhile Sascha’s seemingly content with his built-in fanbase to try and pull back the legions who lost interest sometime after WWIII.

Sascha and En Esch are cool. Just not cool enough to work together again. I do know Sascha and Gunter Schulz still won’t talk to each other though.

That’s what I’ve heard, though it must have cooled recently? Slick in 2010 had some fat goon dressed as Sascha take the stage. Meanwhile Esch continues to perform songs he co-wrote on current tours and I haven’t heard of any lawsuits.

I wouldn’t expect Esch to appear on any KMFDM albums but why not show the fanbase, longtime and newer some amity by remixing each others work?

Best song in a very long time. I like when bands use the name of songs in their songs. PIG and Megadeth come to mind.

Is every lyric in this song a past album title or song lyric?

It’s quite good though.

There’s only a certain amount of self reference/self parody a band can get away with and it seems like KMFDM have been doing this… forever.

KMFDM’s already done something like this with “Inane” off the Xtort album. Song was ok. But I originally didn’t like Krank (single version), but ended up enjoying it a little more with the rest of the album.

That’s just goofy.
