If only a new album…
If only they’d play something off of Brighter, Rubicon or Twilight Of The Mortal would work with the newer stuff.

Seconded. I’ve always felt ‘Adorations’ would make a great opener… maybe not for a setlist featuring their 00s albums, but that setlist there is open to fit it in. I love that song.
Only 6 songs? Were they each 12 minutes long?
Sadly, I think Jaz and co. hate the Brighter album. I remember reading that somewhere. Personally, it’s one of my favorites.
I’d rate ‘Brighter…’ as their second best if not their best. Their post Brighter stuff got pretty boring after a while up till ‘Hosannas…’

Strange, I mean Brighter isn’t that extreme a departure from Night Time…definitely more synths and a bit poppier, but there’s some solid songwriting on that one. Maybe Virgin was pushing KJ to be a hit machine around that time? I think there’s something about that in the liner notes of the disappointing re-issue. Speaking of which, I didn’t like the ‘dried-up’ sound and slightly alternate versions (different edits, anyway). The sonics are a big part of that album, in my opinion. Glad I held on to my old EG disc.
My band has been discussing covering either Adorations or Twilight Of The Mortal at future shows. That would be fun.

You get two thumbs up of encouragement from me for that possiblility. You did a fine job on Click Click and Wire so I’d like to hear your KJ, esp. ‘Adorations’

I disagree. I think some great albums came along after: Pandemonium, Democracy, and their 03 ST. I found their last one to be a bit on the boring side, and a failed attempt to create a heavy album along the lines of Fire Dances, another really good one. I just think, maybe, they’ve been hit or miss since Brighter.
And yes, I think label pressure is the reason. Forget where I saw that, so take it with a grain of salt.
Killing Joke is a rare veteran band where I’d rather listen to one of their newer albums than one of their older albums.
NightTime and their first album are some of the best music I`ve ever heard. Thousand Suns was decent, with one minor complaint, all the songs sound the same. You could say its their With Sympathy.
Is it just me or does Youth look like David Lynch in that picture?
‘Brighter Than 1000 Suns’ is a great album, but yes, sadly alot of it is rather samey. There are also a couple of REALLY weak tracks that could have been trimmed (Rubicon, Victory). Same goes for ‘Fire Dances’, which is more or less a good album, but VERY samey which detracts from it’s overall effectiveness. It also has its fair share of WTF tracks.
As for everything that came after…the only album I can stomach is ‘Pandaemonium’. ‘Hosannas From The Basement…’ would have been ok were it not for the HORRENDOUS production.

He sure does, its sort of uncanny.
Oh wow. That’s actually an awesome setlist.
New album? When?

YES.
Throw two more thumbs into the mix. More to follow.
Catch this original line-up of KJ if you get the chance!
I was lucky enough to catch them in Glasgow late last year and of course they were superb.

I’ve always liked Brighter. No, it’s not as consistent as its predecessor, but I think it sounds like a logical progression of the sound they achieved on Night Time. Chessboards and Adorations are great songs and I really like Goodbye to the Village. Strange this album has sparked a big discussion and not one mention of Outside the Gate?!?!
My favorites are What’s THIS For…? (what A…title!), Night Time and Pandemonium. Every album is worth hearing at least once, however those three sound the most solid from beginning to end, to my ears.
As for Hosannas, always thought the stuffy production was completely intentional. It can sound a bit grating, I suppose, but I think it works for the material even if it makes the album a bit hard to listen to all the way through.
