killing joke 2009

As for Hosannas, always thought the stuffy production was completely intentional. It can sound a bit grating, I suppose, but I think it works for the material even if it makes the album a bit hard to listen to all the way through.

The production is as intended from what I remember hearing. They made it in a dingy old Czech studio with old equipment. The stuffiness might be off putting at first but after a few spins it starts to make its effect. It’s heavy as fuck too, probably their heaviest ever. I prefer it to the second self titled album which I thought was too repetitive (a criticism KJ know all too well). ‘Hosanna’s’, ‘Implosion’ & ‘Majestic’ are quality stompers.

I thought that “Blood On Your Hands” was very reminiscent of the Night Time album, such a great song. Like him or hate him, Dave Grohl’s drums on that '03 album were outstanding, especially Asteroid and Implant.

I haven’t listened to Hosannas in a while, may have to spin that one again. I do like it, though it was more difficult to get into than the '03 KJ.

Try ranking their albums…it’s tough for me since I like pretty much everything, but based on listening frequency:

Brighter
Night Time
Democracy
Pandemonium
KJ 1980
KJ 2003
Fire Dances
Revelations
What’s THIS For
Hosannas
Extremeties
Outside The Gate

I’ve no time for Foo Fighters but Dave Grohl is one of the best drummers of all time, he was awesome on QOTSA’s ‘Songs for the Deaf’ too. I too would rank ‘Brighter…’ & ‘Night Time’ as their best and ‘Outside the Gate’ as their worst. Most of KJ’s stuff I find doesn’t retain much longevity. I like Jaz as a singer, he’s got plenty of charisma too.

Everlong Is pretty much the only Decent song to come from Dave Grohl (I Prefer the live version as heard on the Howard Stern Show) along with his Prince cover of Darling Nikki But then that’s not his song now is it? no wonder it’s good!

It’s a metal project Grohl did a couple of years ago. He wrote all the songs and then got his favorite metal singers to do the vocals.
I guess you’ve got to like metal, but it’s good, and he plays guitar, bass, and drums on it.

And of course, as a drummer he’s done Nirvana (obviously), Killing Joke, Nine Inch Nails, Queens of the Stone Age, Tenacious D, Prodigy, and other bands I don’t particularly care about, and for those he gets a lifetime pass from me.

Grohl’s an amazing drummer. Always has, and always will. I’m not a fan of his singing and songwriting though. But i’ll always recognize his drumming talents.

Also, no matter how many times I try, I can’t even force myself to sit through Outside The Gate. I think it’s possibly one of the most boring albums ever. Just seems like it was forced, but it wasn’t really meant to be a KJ album anyway. But I think it was just boring, cliche pop music worth being forgotten.

And, one of my favorite songs ever is on What’s THIS for? BUTCHER! Geordie’s a fucking crazy person to pull that stuff off, and most certainly one of my top 3 guitarists of all time most likely. I don’t really have a list of guitarists, but he’d certainly be high up there.

And, one more thing. The title track from Hosannas is actually a very good track, so it does have SOME redeeming qualities, and I can probably think of a couple others. But I got bored with it, and rarely go to it. And the production, I think was very intentional. They recorded the entire thing is a small basement (literally) in prague.

Probot: better in theory than in execution. Maybe I need to give the album a few more spins, but a lot of the arrangements strike me as uninspired. Almost like he had some of it in mind for The Foo Fighters. Like the guitars never quite reach their potential, and Grohl, as great a drummer as I really think he is is far more suited for bands in the alterna-rock pantheon.

Don’t know how the record ended up released on Southern Lord, but that’s super cool of him to let it get released through that label as I’m sure it made them some money

Wiki sez: “Major labels were also reluctant to release an album featuring cult musicians of the past, causing Grohl to opt for the smaller, metal-based Southern Lord Records.[3]”

Label: King Diamond? How about you get Amy Lee from Evanescence? Or the young man from Disturbed? They’re hot right now, you know!

Grohl: Yeah, thanks. I’m going to go over here for awhile…

“Outside the Gate” was awesome and you know it.

Can’t believe we discussed this only a month ago. The band debuted “Twilight” on Wednesday night, complete with backing videos. I’ll have to post an external link when I get home (the videos are up on Facebook, though Afra and wempathy are the only ones I see there). The cover is pretty much a faithful reproduction of the album version.

My band has been discussing covering either Adorations or Twilight Of The Mortal at future shows. That would be fun.

You get two thumbs up of encouragement from me for that possiblility. You did a fine job on Click Click and Wire so I’d like to hear your KJ, esp. ‘Adorations’

Throw two more thumbs into the mix. More to follow.[/reply]

What’s your Facebook name? I’d love to see those!

Jim Ballard (Phoenix, AZ) There’s also a group for The Corrugation, if you wanted to join. Only half of the show is up right now, I’m putting up the other half this afternoon. I’ll make sure to add you, thanks!

Jim, you’ve got an album coming out? That’s great. I didn’t know the website was back up. Was this mentioned already on prongs, I didn’t see it anyway. I’ll have to give the other downloads a spin. All the best with the album anyway

Thanks Mick, I really appreciate it.

Yeah, things kinda changed this year. Last year I may have mentioned recording an industrial record with a Wax Trax feel to it, but that all got shelved in January after writing Chasing Shadows, which I did share here. The new stuff is all influenced by The Cure, Peter Murphy, KJ, JD, Chams, Editors, New Order… The ‘industrial’ stuff I was writing late last year is in pieces, but I would still like to finish and release it later, we just have a lot of momentum going right now with the current songs.

With that said, I’m trying not to jinx myself with a bunch of premature hype here. The album recording has started, but we’ve started piling on live shows lately, so ‘Fall 2009’ is quickly turning into ‘Winter 2009’ for the release. I still have a couple more songs to write, but we’re up to about 9 originals for this thing. When the CD is finished and pressed, then I’ll probably do a little pimp action here for it. I know I will get some solid honest opinions here, good and bad, and I think some of the prongers might like the music.

The demos on the site are pretty good, but full of flaws, mostly mixing and vocal issues. Guess that’s why they’re called demos. The album versions will be much-improved in all areas, that’s for certain.

I hope you like what you hear, and speaking of website, I need to update that thing (maybe re-design it, too).

Cheers.

Just re-favorited the Corrugation site (was down for a while, right?) and am DLing the samples now. I’m psyched, 1002. Seriously.

Whoah!

Back up there a minute…

When did you say the new album was coming out…?

<complete silence>

Hmmm…yeah. I thought as much.

Anyway, to add vinegar to the fire, I also thought ‘Brighter Than A Thousand Suns’ was way overlooked. It’s a really haunting atmospheric album with some out and out classic tracks. It’s the Killing Joke album I listen to the most. I wasn’t into them at the time of its release (I was only 12 when it came out) but from what I hear it completely stiffed and the band were left with egg on their face. I think they were expecting it to be their commercial breakthrough. These days they never mention it.

Same with ‘Extremeties, Dirt…’. Even thought he band were really happy with it and viewed it as some sort of a comeback (I never did personally…in fact I think it’s their worst album) it also sold sweet fuck all and the band promptly broke up again for a few years.

Could anyone shed some light on this? Pretty sure this is what happened regarding these two albums but if someone could verify it, that would be great. There isn’t a lot of info on late 80’s early 90s Killing Joke to be found. There’s kind of a big ol’ gap when it comes to that period.

I think the band were lost in the wilderness for a while.
