Kanye West Rules

HA! There was a time in my life where I really couldn’t accept any band that people actually liked. If more than a few closet weirdos liked a band I figured they must suck. So I just bought weird obscure stuff . . . some of it was pretty cool, but I did have a pretty closed mind when it came to anything even remotely “mainstream”, and wouldn’t even give it half a chance.

Hipster Sheep!

Hipster Sheep!

I’d rather be a happy hipster sheep listening to music I love than a cynical goat bitterly munching away at tin cans.

Me four. It’s funny I’ve got a whole lot more love in my life since I changed that attitude.

I’ll drink to that!

I wish I was cool enough to be a hipster. I know maybe 10% of the music they play on the radio and perhaps 2% of the stupid crap the kids on here are all googoogaga about.

I heard it and I’m not impressed. Even my wife hates it and she loved the last record. There’s an Aphex Twin loop through one song, but it just made me want to listen to the actual original song

It’s “avril 14th” btw, if you wanna youtube it

Haha, I was just kidding about the hipster thing. At this point i say fuck it. The dude gets praised for sampling music he’s unable to create. I’m all for sampling but using it as a crutch to hold up your music is kind of cheap.

It is indeed…although that’s not what Kanye has done with his use of sampling on this record. I can’t really comment about his earlier records as I simply haven’t heard one all the way through. I can however say the samples featured on this record are not a crutch for it…imo anyway. Kanye is very able when it comes to creativity on this record.

I’m a motherfuckin monster!

I dunno…

I do use samples but I’d never sample a hook from a song or a recognizable loop.

If I do take something I’ll mangle it and make it my own.

That single where he samples the main vocal hook from “21st Century Schizoid Man” just makes me want to listen to the original.

That’s not genius, it’s musical theft IMO.

The single and video were interesting.

The most interesting thing to me (and I’m not being sarcastic) was the extreme brevity of the song. Was kind of cool how it was just BAM and then it’s over.

The King Crimson song still owns that shit any day though.

And I’ll never take the “one man performer” thing totally seriously, except for like a NIN scenario where he augments it with a live band.

Hip Hop live is almost always a joke, and I don’t think Kanye is any exception from what I’ve seen…

I’ve been to 100s of live shows and most of the best ones were Hip Hop. In particular Edan, Spank Rock, Roots Manuva, Skinnyman, People Under The Stairs, Saul Williams and a ton more.

I saw Spank Rock a few years back and it was easily one of the best “live” shows I’ve ever seen. After every two or three songs the two DJ’s and dude on the laptop would go into insanely incredible jams mixing all sorts of records that really shouldnm’t have worked but did spectacularly.

I saw Saul Williams in 2005 with a DJ and it was devastating. I saw Saul on the Niggy tour with a “band” and it was no where near as deadly.

Live Hip Hop rules.

Void, I disagree.

The Roots, Saul Williams, Wu Tang Clan, Jurassic 5, Nappy Roots, Cypress Hill: All pretty amazing shows.

Agreed. Even easily recognizable drum or guitar loops bug me.

I like this video.

I don’t think I can get into his stuff. I downloaded some of his stuff. A little too “overwhelming”? I did catch the King Crimson sample very quickly, though.

I think everyone has to agree that Kanye West is certainly more awesome than the “no war but ass war” Obama thread.

Wasn’t aware until a few days ago that he did Flashing Lights. I had heard the song before on an episode of nip/tuck, but never knew it was him (instrumental). I was talking to a pal from work about kanye, and he mentioned the song, I went and listened to it, and it was that very song. Very good. He’s certainly one of the more creative ones out there.

Wish, he’d do away with Lil Wayne though. That guy is total fucking garbage… Teenage white girl’s fantasy, I guess? Seems the way in my area at least.

The new lil Wayne album is awesome.

The theme from Mad Men is Aceyalone’s “A Beautiful Mine” with RJD2 on production from his Magnificent City LP. That’s probably made Acey more money than his entire back catalogue? I hope so anyway as Acey is the man.

RJD2 is killer also, even if I am not big into his latest lp
