Wasn’t there already an equivalent to a “justify your shitty music” thread on here (“guilty pleasures” or something like that)? Or am I thinking of the old Neubauten board?
How about Motley Crue’s “Generation Swine”? That’s a truly terrible album that I own and inexplicably haven’t thrown away. Pretty hard to justify though…
I also agree that Rio Grande Blood was a good album. It was certainly NOT an interesting album, but it was a good metal album, as was Houses of the Mole. I think it really went downhill with The Last Sucker, which just seemed so lazy and thrown together without any effort. But the first two were good. Relapse… it’s hard for me to get past the cringe-worthy lyrics.
Another on board for Rio Grande Blood…always liked that album and figured I was the only one on the board…
I am waiting for someone to defend Cold Lake by Celtic Frost or Grave New World by Discharge…or Cut the Crap by The Clash(not a huge fan of The Clash’ “good” albums)…
Most people hate Born Again by Black Sabbath…I’ve loved it since day one(yes, even despite displaying one of the worst engineering jobs in the history of music)…I still think it’s one of the best things Sab has ever done…
I’ve also heard a lot of disdain for the Killing Joke s/t from 2003…while it isn’t nearly as good as the original s/t Killing Joke I still like the record a great deal…not a huge fan of Dave Grohl music but always liked his drum work…it shines on this album…great album with hard driving catchy songs…
Two great tastes (Gillan and Sabbath) that taste great together.
And “Zero the Hero” is one of the best, most heaviest, most badass songs EVER. But the rest of the album is awesome too.
Agreed…and no self-respecting fan of heavy metal can deny the awesomeness of Disturbing the Priest…that song just bleeds shameless,no apologies old school Metal…
…and yes,I know it was a direct inspiration for This is Spinal Tap and I still love it with no irony…
I was a full-blown Spinal Tap fan long before I discovered Born Again or knew anything about the link. Then I discovered the album and loved it! Finding out shortly thereafter about Stonehenge and a few other fiascos only made me love it that much more.
I think I’ll wear my BORN AGAIN Mexican bootleg t-shirt today! It’s bright purple with the devil baby on it. It is probably the most hideous shirt I’ve ever owned. I’ll try to snap a nice faggy selfie for y’all later.

That rules dude…I rarely see anyone with a Born Again shirt(although it does happen on occasion)…I used to have one from the original tour…I was at the show down here…I wore it out though…it was a long sleeve with red sleeves and the dates on the back…I wore it until it literally fell off of me…that shirt used to horrify people and I got lots of dirty looks…of course,I loved every minute of it…

I’ve seen it for sale on various metal-shirt store sites online and such, but it’s usually like a typical black shirt with the red devil baby. This thing is purple. And not like a regal gothic purple. No, Sir. This is straight faggy purple. It looks like I crawled right up Barney’s asshole and decided to wear him as a shirt.

I have seen the bootleg you are talking about…it’s an eye sore for sure…but a glorious eye sore it is…I am going to go home from work and put on Born Again…I even have the weird demo’s bootleg of that fucker…

I love that album. Grohl drums like he’s using 2x4s for sticks.
Born Again is ridiculous. I can’t say I like it, and Gillan was a terrible fit for Sabbath. But on the other hand, I have the album on my office wall.
Gunnar, is it just my imagination, or did you at some point confess to liking Billy Idol’s “Cyberpunk” on here?
I do know you have expressed admiration for Punk Rocker Number One himself; but can’t remember if you sprang to the defense of that record in particular.
I was doing something for a while called “Second Chance Saturday” where I’d take one of these widely villified albums and force myself to listen to it and give a proper review.
“Cyberpunk” had some really cool stuff on it. And yes, I’m incredibly gay for Billy Idol.
Although I find that it’s pretty rare that upon re-listening to something I didn’t like much at first my opinion changes. It happens in the other direction a lot though; re-listening to something that I liked at first I sometimes wonder what on earth I could have been thinking.
Another one for me is Another Perfect Day by Motorhead…that album was derided when it came out because it was the first one without Fast Eddie Clarke and because it is a bit of a stylistic departure in some ways(in as much as a Motorhead record can be)…and admittedly Fast Eddie’s replacement ,Brian Robertson(ex-Thin Lizzy), was an odd fit…I am a huge Motorhead fan and I think it’s one of their better albums…some of their best songs and really great production…it always gets the short shrift in favor of Ace of Spades,Overkill etc…
Orgasmatron is another overlooked one in their catalog…produced by none other than the great Bill Laswell…
Another one for me is Another Perfect Day by Motorhead…
“Another Perfect Day” is a great album. It gets the finger from a lot of people for the wrong reason. People read an article in MOJO magazine or something and hear about what a poofter “Robbo” was by Lemmy’s (or others’) accounts (and probably properly so) so they jump on the “oh, I hope people see how in-the-know and elitist I am” bandwagon. I don’t care if Robbo was a big faggy douchecake. The album rips (as does Thin Lizzy).
“Ace of Spades” is great too, of course, but gets overly-humped a lot due to having the title track that EVERYONE knows. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a reason that track is famous, but if the title of the album was “More Motorhead by Motorhead” or anything other than “Ace of Spades” it would not have become the singular go to reference point for all casual and completely ignorant metal and rock fans.
It would simply be another of a handful of fairly popular albums by the band.
