Justify your shitty taste: Ministry's With Sympathy

Thanks for the link.

With Sympathy used to be one of my favorites. After discovering the live versions and period outtakes…it really pales in comparison.

While edgier than most new wave albums, most agree that it is a good album for the genre, even if they’re not in to it.

I had contacted them about doing ones for Ozzy’s The Ultimate Sin and Mayhem’s Grand Declaration of War. I had offered to type it up myself, but I guess they already have staff that types the article. Whomever typed up The Ultimate Sin didn’t really put in much of a good word, so I’m not quite sure if I’m ready to cringe at their “defense” of Al’s abortion…

They also did one of these for Filth Pig.

Filthpig^ isn’t shit!!

Regarding that link, is that sound in Lava the words, “be healed”?

Who the Hell said “Ultimate Sin” is shitty? That’s a great album!!! And the cover art is totally badass too! Well worth buying the vinyl just to enjoy the detail of the art.

Stand out tracks: “Ultimate Sin”, “Killer of Giants”, “Shot in the Dark”. The whole album is solid, though.

Anyway, whoever says that album is shitty is a jackass and should die.

Many of my friends who really dig Ozzy hate that album, but love Bark At The Moon which I think is almost a complete piece of shit (except for the title track, “So Tired” and “Waiting For Darkness”). To tell you the truth, most fans shit on that album because he was kind of treading on hair metal territory. Most fans tend to remember the tracks Gunnar listed (all of which are great), but there were some other lost gems like “Never Know Why” and “Lightning Strikes”

I don’t Bark At The Moon is a waste. But I do agree that “Ultimate Sin” is a better album.

he was kind of treading on hair metal territory

ah, but to me it’s been like that since first album, i mean, slap some more modern production (more trebly/thinny sound, reverb the shit out of the drums) on stuff like ‘no bone movies’ and ‘steal away the night’ and some other tracks and you get your typical “hair” metal taste.

and i wouldn’t say ozzy (or 86-91 alice cooper) is that much of hair metal, it’s more of an ‘arena rock’ thing, but they both sure were treading on that territory in those days, very well put.

I read the one about Filth Pig. What dumb, lazy writing. Unfortunately this kind of crap is typical for the internet and typical of music writing in general (online or in print). Here in Portland, for instance, the reviews section of the two main independent papers are written on auto-pilot. It’s always the same 3 or 4 adjectives used over and over again, the same structures, the same rhetorical flourishes, etc. A funny thing: when the taste of mainstream music here moved from “indie” to heavier stuff during the past few years the old adjectives (how about some “shimmering soaring spectral harmonies”?) gave way to new ones (may I interest you in some “razor-sharp slashing cutting guitar-riff hooks?”)… but it’s the same old story.

The internet at least has the excuse of the need for massive amounts of new articles to feed the public’s constant need for novel content (which makes the 24 hour news cycle seem quaint), but what is the music press’ general excuse? Music writing has been generally terrible as long as I can remember. (And before anyone responds with a link to a good article, I’ll just say that there are always exceptions that prove the general rule.) One might venture to say that these are supposed to be people who like music and take an interest in it, or, at the very least, should have some sort of standards and pride in their work, but there is little evidence of either.

And, while I’m ranting, here’s one for the other folks here who make music:

Also deeply annoying are “tips” articles in trade magazines (EQ, Sound on Sound, Future Music, etc.). These are the articles billed as “Tips for Creating Better Mixes” and so on… they include gems like: “Listen on different speakers” “Listen at different volumes” “Give your ears a break periodically” “Don’t stab your eardrums with a pencil beforehand” and so on. Here you know they’ve spent a maximum of 30 seconds working and decided to call it a half-day and head home. I recently bought a copy of Sound on Sound because it had an Adrian Sherwood interview (which was short and not very interesting… mostly shitty questions and no depth …lazy). The issue included an “article” on using stomp boxes in the studio, which can be summed up in one sentence: “Many people wouldn’t think of using a stomp box for something other than a guitar, but you can!” …wow …what a fucking revelation …consider my mind blown.

Yes it is indeed “Be Healed” and not “Piggggyyyyy” as the writer of the article suggested…

I liked all of Ozzys albums up until Ultimate Sin…after that is where it started to get a bit sketchy…nothing will ever top Diary of a Madman in my book…I saw Ozzy on the Ultimate Sin tour and Yngwie Malmsteen opened up for him…little did I know that years later I would end up doing work for that narcissistic egomaniacal genius…

I think “justify your shitty taste” deserves a Prongs thread all unto its own (i.e. not limited to appreciation of With Sympathy).

Certainly you dames and gents all have some skeletons in the closet that haven’t made it to the “what are you listening to” thread, oui?

Well I’ve gone on record repeatedly as loving “RELAPSE”. I don’t see anyone jumping on this wagon with me, though.

I don’t know what else is reviled that I dig . . . Black Sabbath’s “Forbidden”, I guess. I’ve also come around, eventually, to DANZIG 5 Blackacidevil.

I don’t know. That sounds right though. “Piiiiiiiigyyyyy” or however that hack spelled it, certainly seems off.

For the record, I love the Filth Pig album. I didn’t when I was 17, but it’s a top fiver at least, in my 30’s.

I think it’s interesting that 2 Ministry albums have been featured. Neither of them being Relapse.

I think Rio Grande Blood is one Ministry’s best. It’s a pure metal album, but I think it’s great. Know most people hate that one.

Otherwise, I will admit I like Korn. Can’t explain it, just dig them.

I’ve recently thought about revisiting Blackacidevil. When it came out, it sounded like he was copping a NIN sound and it turned me off.

How does it hold up all these years later?

And Relapse blows.

I find there’s very little music that i have an outright “allegiance” to, meaning i care deeply about it as a representation of my culture and a vision of the kind of world i want to see born.

So beyond that sliver of available music that I revere, there is a ton of stuff that merely amuses me or that interests me on a “documentarian” level. I think the mistake made by many people is that, if you bother to listen to music in any capacity, it’s because you’re supposed to “see something of yourself” in it, and this is where defending of taste has to happen.

I must have written before about my enjoyment of sickly-sweet, superficial, “Shibuya-kei” music like Pizzicato Five, and eccentric goofy songstresses like Jun Togawa. I don’t know why, but this style of music causes more pure rage in other people I encounter than just about anything I own. And by other people I do mean a pretty broad swath of other people, not just extreme music afficionadoes who have a different Deathspell Omega shirt for every day of the week.

I gave it a second chance last year.
I thought I remembered liking it more than I did.
I rated it 6/10, and I think I was just very surprised at the time that I liked as much as I did because 20 years ago I thought it was the worst thing ever and proceeded to never listen to it again and pretend it had never been made.

I like Rio Grande Blood as well - I’d like it even more if the lyrics didn’t make it so dated already.

As for Blackacidevil, I think that album could really benefit from a rearranged tracklisting. It starts right out the gate with the distorted Rob Zombie voice and clanging metal drums. Some of the later tracks are more traditionally Danzig, and if they’d appeared earlier in the record folks would be able to ease better into the sound and accept it more.
