aka John Lowery .was watching his dvd i have the devil knows my name today.
out of curiosity what do you guys think of his guitar talent.
i think the boy can jam his shit…
Only know of his contributions to Holy Wood and TGAOG. Still wouldn’t be able to name what riffs were his. He always seemed more of an auxiliary musician than a real songwriting partner.
I just love that dumb live vid on youtube where Manson has the stupid Mickey Mouse ears on and starts to taunt John 5 by pushing him…and John5 throws his guitar down and puts up his dukes in true Little Rascals/Three Stooges fashion…he looked like the biggest sissy on earth.hahahahaha…but I digress…
The dude obviously has super chops and can shred his ass off…clearly talented…but I won’t be rushing out to buy any solo albums…

This x 1000. I put John 5 in the same category as say a Gene Hoglan or James Murphy (not the LCD Soundsystem guy). Talented dudes but ultimately session players without a huge creative stamp.
I only know him from Marilyn Manson and though he’s a great technical guitarist and can “shred”, creatively I don’t care for him or his songwriting. I like Holy Wood but there was nothing about any of the riffs that stood out on it. Where as Zim Zum’s stuff on Mechanical Animals is quite memorable and creative.

Hahaha, John 5 looked like a sissy? I thought Manson did. John 5 was ready to throw-down like a crazed person: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fyvtxh1w0do
It’s funny how Manson taunts John 5 like, “Come on! You wanna go?” Then puts his hands up to his chest and backs away while talking shit and pointing to the guitar. You can tell the big, dumb asshole has no idea how to fight despite acting like a tough guy.
I have a feeling John was already sick of being treated like shit and this, though it seemed to be an accident, just set him off. god, I wish he would’ve laid Manson out. Imagine the satisfaction of knocking out some dickhead who’s wearing motherfucking Mickey Mouse ears in front of all of those people?
I thought both kinda looked like sissies. Difference, John probably would’ve whipped Manson. Didn’t take long after, I think, that John quit or was fired. Depends on who you ask I guess. Very good guitarist. Probably the best technical guitarist that band has ever seen.
He’s still tearing it up with Zombie though, along with Ginger Fish. Wonder how that tour went. I’d assume there’s some bad blood between Ginger/John and Manson.
Yeah,I should have included in my post that they both looked like total sissies…didn’t mean to exclude Mr Warner…

Not very well…

Did he name himself after the robot from Short Circuit?

I love Manson’s older stuff pre-GAOG (I actually really like “Eat Me, Drink Me” too) but he has no right to be such a prima donna anymore. He’s a drunk, fat, irrelevant, jackass, who tries way too hard now days (smoke bombs, writing “fuck you” on his face to supposedly prevent paparazzi photos even though it spawned more photos and attention than if he’d not done it in the first place, winded during concerts, no longer has a chin, vocals ruining albums now, future resident on some VH1 celebrity addict show, etc.).
Like anyone would notice that his shit setlist was cut short had he not mentioned it. Bummer all those people missed out on some shit cover songs and predictable singles.
He used to at least come off as intelligent regardless of how you felt about his music. That was his redeeming quality even amongst people who hated him. Now he’s a moron who’s music has turned to shite. He’s got nothing going for him anymore.
EDIT: And I don’t even like Rob Zombie’s music.
i think marilyn manson (the band) named him like that because, well, his name is John, and he was 5th member (at that time the band was twiggy, pogo, fish and manson). i guess after that the name got kinda stuck to him.
I like this one:

Lame. I would have had a reason to like him if he was named for the Short Circuit robot.
Does his solo stuff have singers, or is it just a bunch of instrumental wanking? I might give it a try if he’s got vocalists.
I heard a clip of him a while back and he seemed like a great player but he’s never been on my radar because he only plays with jackasses whom I don’t give a rat’s ass about (Manson, Zombie, David Lee Roth . . .).
That “kicked-by-Mickey” clip is a favorite of mine. He reminds me of one of those punching puppets (either the nun or the Notre Dame leprechaun - take your pick). I always laugh at the video because it looks exactly like a scene that was repeated MANY times growing up. There’s the little pipsqueak bastard that just hangs around and you can’t help but torture endlessly and then one day there’s that episode where he snaps and gets all feisty. Everyone is taken aback for about 5 seconds before laughing hysterically.
Yes! DJ knows what’s up!
Everything said in this thread so far is spot on. Talented, zero creativity, etc.
Ditto for the appraisals of Manson.
Has anyone heard the 2wo album he did with Rob Halford, produced by Trent Reznor? It’s pretty interesting attempt at a crossover.

I was one of the handful of people that actually liked the 2wo album…really good catchy songs with strong hooks and chorus’…and Halford sounded great on it…never understood the bashing it received…

I’m guessing it wasn’t “metal” enough for his fans and nobody outside of them ever really gave it a chance…

Yeah it was kind of on an island unto itself…I don’t think it had the best of promotional campaign’s either…
Pretty sure John 5 is a section out of the bible.
