It's Always Christmas Time

I’m not sure the song itself was a tribute to Raven. They just previewed it on the anniversary of his death as a a tribute. I doubt they put a whole lot of thought into any details beyond that.

I don’t think it’s meant to be the song so much that’s a tribute to Raven but the fact that both people involved worked with him in different capacities and love and miss him that’s the tribute.

you could dedicate your song to your dog.
who cares. if it’s a good song, so be it. if it’s something someone wants to hear again without thinking of the obvious rip offs, well. that’s something in a slightly… slightly…different …hm.
class.

Raven liked getting presents at christmas. this song was 13th planets present to all . . . on the anniversary of raven’s death.

come on guys, it’s ALWAYS christmas time

Gunnar, where did you hear that?

As for the song, I didn’t think it was so bad. Give Al some credit; it’s something different, and it’s good to see him doing something a little out of the ordinary compared to his output in recent years.

The song was nice, but that’s what it was; nice. Not much more. To me, it sort of sounded unfinished. Listening to it, I was expecting a bridge, or sort of big climax. Think about it, all the great pop songs in history have had one of those things, or both… the sort of point in the song where everything consolidates, then it goes back to the chorus. This didn’t have that. Verse, chorus, verse, chorus, fade out. They could’ve done more with that, and also more with the instrumentation. The guitars were nice, but some more prominent synths or other instrumentation would’ve been cool.

And the screaming? Mmm… not horrible, but really incongruous to the rest of the song. I reckon female vocals singing the same notes in place of it would’ve been GREAT. But… no.

It’s a good sign, but nothing more. If it’s the tip of the iceberg, great, but… hopefully he expands upon it. As far as pop and songwriting goes, it’s not the greatest ever thing, but it’s not bad. I get the feeling it was rushed on the net in time for the ‘anniversary’, and given that more could’ve been done with the song… I don’t think I’m far from being right.

As for the whole ‘tribute’ thing… I think Raven’s death hit Al hard because it reminded him of death. Raven was the same age, and had lived the same life. Remember, his heart attack wasn’t directly caused by a coke binge or whatever, but was in actual fact brought on by years of drug abuse.

Al would be shitting himself, and I don’t blame him. I can’t remember the exact biological explanation for it, but stroke is highly prevalent in a lot of heavy heroin users, irrespective of how long they’ve been off it. I know, I know people will shout, ‘BUT BURROUGHS and KEEF!!!’, but I honestly think they are the rare exceptions that just evade it somehow.

For anyone to witness a close friend of the same age die, it’s a massive wake up call. And that’s why I think it hit Al hard. Paul, at the time, was someone he was working with every day, and probably appreciated any friendship in light of all the bullshit that’s happened with the other Paul.

I can relate to this, because something similar happened to me. A guy I knew killed himself this year, and he was my age. It pretty much messes with you, and I’m sure everyone has a tale they can relate it to. It really screwed my best friend up, and eventually led to the downfall of our relationship. For 7 months, we still don’t speak to each other after having caught up nearly every day. It hit me hard, because I’d had a massive falling out with two guys I was in a band with just before the suicide, and it just reminds you how one minute you’re gone and there’s nothing you can do about it if you’ve burnt your bridges with that people.

To be honest, it’s not my place to say… but maybe instead of writing songs about this death, Al would be better off patching shit up with his old cronies. One minute, you’re hating someone, the next, that person is dead and you just spend your days regretting it and feeling like shit.

I think that’s a very fair assessment of the situation Evil Dildo. Sorry to hear about your loss.
