Interpol

Is anyone here aware of the beautiful music this band makes?
I can count on both hands the bands/artists that have really affected me this century, and Interpol is very close to the top. I’ve never seen any love here for these guys. It’s really easy to see the Joy Division and Echo and the Bunnymen influence, so I would think there would be some fans on this board.

I tried listening to them a few times but never managed to see them as more than Comsat Angels, The Sound, Chameleons (and the other two bands you mentioned) rip-offs, but with terrible emo mascara.

Maybe I should give them another chance but honestly, I find this whole post-punk revival to be a huge disappointment and nothing compared to the classics.

Their first album really took hold of me, and the 2nd and 3rd less so.

Very much agree with this.

As regards Interpol, they’re ok. There’s a few good tracks from the first album, the 2nd album I thought was boring and haven’t heard any of their stuff since. I saw them live a few years ago and they were good so I’ll give them that.

But all these skinny guys wearing their guitars up really high and trying to sing like Ian Curtis these days are, more often than not, second rate. See Bloc Party for example, they are terrible.

They never impressed me. There’s other bands from this lot that I prefer.

i like them. i think their drummer is amazing. reminds me of joy division more than anything else.

I’m a huge Interpol fan. Love almost everything I’ve heard by them (which is most of their stuff). Love the drums and the guitars. Bass is pretty nice too. Not terribly up on their vocals or lyrics but they don’t bother me so that’s a plus.

I’ve got a few Interpol songs in my iTunes. I tend to prefer their remixes than the originals as that makes them sound like a techno Joy Division rather than just a Joy Division Joy Division.

It’s funny… I got into Interpol before I got into Joy Division, and when I listened to JD, I cracked, “Hey, sounds just like Interpol!” That’s when my friend slapped me.

I like Editors the best of the newer post-punk bands, but Turn On The Bright Lights was a really good album, and Interpol’s live performance at Curiosa in '04 was great (better than The Cure’s that night). I haven’t really kept up with their newer material.

I prefer ‘The National’.

I prefer ‘The National’.

Good call, I like this band as well. They certainly also have this post-punk revival vibe going but they sound nothing like the 80s bands and have pretty good lyrics.

I haven’t heard anything by The National. I’ll have to check them out.

Yep, the National is the real deal.

The National is definitely rad.
For Interpol, I enjoy Turn on the Bright Lights a whole lot, and Antics isn’t too bad. I didn’t bother picking up Our Love to Admire.
But with The National, I think Boxer is a strong contender for best album of the decade.

I’ve heard good things about The National but am not familiar with their music. I know someone who is big on them so I’ll get a loanski and see what the fuss is about.

Great band. Love the first album, second not so much, and their third was a step up from the prior. Basically a less-angsty, perverted of Joy Division (for today). So I approve. Not many people have written about threesomes and have a really nice chilled melody to it, heh.

ha, i actually think albums 2 and 3 are better than TOTBL.

The National are sweet too, and also check out Calla.

Dood… I so love the Editors. Great stuff. Turned onto them by listening to “Interpol” radio on Pandora and they kept popping up and with songs I liked so I had to snag some.

the lead singer has a side project coming out called Julien Plenti. The cd’s called skyscraper august 4th.
I haven’t heard any clip yet though
