ok first thing first.
Jesu vinyl had been added to the section so I picked up Jesu/Eluvium yellow vinyl 15 bucks they had the black one too still sealed for 15 as well but i figured if it’s the same price I’m going for color!!
I also picked up Conqueror used for 8 bucks, Oh man Conqueror is the shit!! definitely in the vein of silver. I dug it instantly and shot me back to Silver. I gotta admit i kept getting s/t and conqueror mixed up because at a quick glance the covers are similar. but the sound is miles apart! Conqueror is certainly going to be in the player for awhile!
Picked up Earth legacy of dissolution for 10 bucks. gotta say… sorry Peligro, upon first spin I’m not hearing it. we listened to justin’s track first and then started it at track one. One song sounded like they recorded it in their car and happened to have left their blinker going!!! I’ll give it another spin some other time but right now it’s going on the bottom of the stack
now, thanks to that socialist program known as the postal service, I have in my hot little hands ill at ease, still shrink wrapped as well as endless summer still shrink wrapped, so I’m pretty stoked. although kinda sad cause I’m not really gonna be able to check them out until sunday, gonna be with my inlaws all day saturday.
btw the fennesz live japan was gone. but these were all of the titles in the section:
hotel paraliel, venice, plus 47 degrees minus 16 degrees, live at geneva cathedral, dawn, black sea, field records, touch 2001, mega 054, cendra, big cloud, sala santa cecilia, live at the revolver, warraped island, magic and the return of fen oberg.

Well, what can I say - other than you have pudding for brains.
The Jim O’Rourke track on that album is one of my top 10 tracks of ALL TIME.

That’s alot of Fennesz. More than I would know what to do with. We have nothing like Amoeba Records in Melbourne. Well…there is Missing Link, but that’s turned to shit since a couple of key store clerks left. Now all the dumbasses are left and they rarely order anything good. It’s all fucking college radio indie puke rock.
There is one other good store called Heartland but it’s not quite avant garde enough for my tastes, though they do have a cool soundtrack section and the industrial and goth sections are decent. Next time I go there I need to remind myself to pick up some more Current 93. Am going through a bit of a Current 93 phase as of late.
I have no idea what else to recommend you. Maybe start with convincing yrself that not every band out there want to sound like Slash’s Snakepit.
If you like Jesu SO MUCH you might want to check out some of the early 90s shoegazer bands, like Ride or My Bloody Valentine.
I listened to the whole Earth discography too, mostly the album I thought was the best was Pentastar. The others were okay, imo. But Pentastar, hoo boy!

Oh I hear ya!
Pentastar is killer - absolutely hands down a desert island disc for me. As indifferent as I am to pot - it makes me want to light up a big fat joint everytime I whack it on. Bees Made Honey In The Lion’s Skull is also pretty damn sweet.
Grmpy, I cannot believe you didn’t like Legacy Of Dissolution. Your revelation has me lost for words. It’s an absolute killer of an album. Apart from the Sunn O))) mix there’s not a dud on it. It’s such a great ‘late nite’ record. If you had trouble getting into that, you’d probably find it difficult to get into more…difficult music - like the stuff Peligro recommended you. I’d say Fennesz is more diffult than Earth. But who knows…maybe you’ll like it.

Still can’t get over your denial of Legacy…
perhaps it was the environment we were listening to it in. going down sunset blvd headed to ther 101 fwy in heavy traffic. It’s not all lost, I didn’t care for silver upon first listen either, but when played in the proper setting, holy shit that Album comes alive. perhaps thats why conqueror was so easy to get into I kinda already had the recipe for Jesu
Don’t get me wrong I’m not completely denying Earth, it’s just upon first listen it wasn’t there…gonna give it another go some time when I can just spin it in the background (at night) and just kinda chill doing something else… I’ll let you know again.

very solid record! this one’s gonna get heavy rotation in the coming days as well BUT you are crazy if you think Rollins did little else but hit the record button! Rollins’ fingerprints are all over this cd! either that or these guys were such mega fans of his that they paid tribute very well. their songs sound like they could’ve been slipped into any Rollins cd (minus the vox of course however the vocal delivery follows the same rhythms as henry usually does)
but none of that matters to solid ear candy so let me tip my hat to you again sir, very solid recommendation.
Peligro
“pudding for brains”… surely you can be bothered to think of a funnier insult than that I mean come on we got a History together… Of course not all bands need to sound like Slash’s snakepit because only ONE person is Slash and anyone that attempted to do so would be “pish!”
but onward to endless summer I plan on giving this a nice solid spin tomorrow.
As far as earth goes I can assure you it will get a second look hell I owe it to my debit card seeing as how I spent 10 bucks on it!

Yeah, Conqueror is a solid record. Seems to get a bad rap over at the Avalanchers forum but who needs to listen to public opinion all the time…
Only track that doesn’t do anything for me is “Brighteyes”. Awesome intro and then it gets unmemorable. “Medicine” is a good song, people! The guitars build and build and keep building into this epic swell with one of his best vocal melodies I think. I don’t really hear a lot of love these days for “Weightless and Horizontal”. The message of that song is kinda ambiguous. Is he trying to tell us not to disappear into a void of reckless apathy before it’s too late or does he genuinely care for the person getting lost? Makes me wonder.
I saw that Earth remix album in a used bin around here and now I really want it. The Bees Made Honey and Hibernaculum are amazing records each and I’m warming up to their earlier sub-pop era stuff too (it’s no challenge to hear the influences they’ve had on everyone)
Fennesz is great! It was his remix of NIN’s “In This Twilight” that sold me on the guy. Went out and found a copy of Venice right away and keep meaning to hear more of his music. One of the best albums to drift to, until David Sylvian begins whispering sweet LOUD nothings into your ears
I really gotta thank the board for opening up “sound” to me. Even those whose personal politics i completely loathe and detest (bitter, music snob Aussies, I’m looking at you [;)]) gotta say thanks. with the exception of a few industrial metal/industrial Dance groups I have, the majority of my music has been very generic 1/4/5 blues rock chord progressions. Although, I have quite a few bands that have beautiful, interesting, and slick interperations of that structure, it really took Silver to paint a musical picture of some place I’d never been, to get me interested in non traditional music enough to really spend a bit of money on recommendations from people whose words I only know and that are located on the other side of the world.
It’s funny cause I put off listening to Jesu for probably a good year because of the mighty Wad’s obnoxious assholeness to nearly everyone on the board but it was also his descritpion of walking home from work or somewhere one snowy night while listening to silver that got me to try it out.
gotta admit I bought S/T cause it was cheap and I kinda wanted to prove to myself that this would be asshole music cause tht asshole liked it and as far as I was concerned I was right but only for S/T.
I like the idea that sound can manipulate images in your minds eye and tell stories with out any lyrics I more completely understand Pink Anvil now. I called it a music collage before but that was really just the tip Of the ice berg and to be honest it even seems a bit juvenile compared to the Jesu releases that seem rather like profesional paintings compared to the stick art that is Pink Anvil. Pink Anvil just seems like a Knock Knock joke. It’s very “thin” for lack of a better word.
anway enough waxing I suppose … all that just to say, Yeah buddy Conqueror is bad ass!!

Actually more like the other way around as Mark Of Cain have been around longer than Rollins and that’s very much THEIR sound.
Justin Broadrick did a filthy remix of “You Let Me Down” Smurfy. It’s on the “Rock’n’Roll” cd which is extremely rare and hard to find sadly. I lost my copy a number of years back and would LOVE to get hold of that Broadrick remix again.
i have some jesu vinyl, it’s amazing to hear it on a proper system too. i also like having large versions of the album art, i’m gonna copy someone’s idea and hang them all on a wall one of these days.

At best it’s it’s a nice soundtrack to a coming of age movie with 3 friends lazily hanging around a lake that’s hidden in a forest.
at worst it’s this guy laughing at people who bought this cd of him twisting frequency knobs and sporadically inserting white noise [laugh]
fortunately, there’s more of the former than the latter and oddly enough a lot of the white noise sounds very pretty in most of the tracks because it comes across like rain. I like rain [:)]
the worst “song” if you can call it that is “before I leave” what a shitty piece of noise that is! is that a joke? flame me all you like, that song is an exercise in patience or a test to see if you are an audio epelectic! Blegh!
btw i listened to this proper with big ass dj head phones and at roughly midnight, pulling big ass weeds in my front yard!

Well…there is Missing Link, but that’s turned to shit since a couple of key store clerks left.
Shit yeah Peligro, the selection has gone to buggery. Last time I went in, it was dominated by a bunch of no name BM local bands (some of which seemed to be little more than demos), and didn’t even have any sunn0))) or Anal Cunt. Sigh. Sigh. Sigh. Sad.
Try metropolis records, on swanston. Oren Ambarchi works/ed there. Some decent stuff. Limited selection.
Ah, the chronicles of Peligro and grmpysmrf.
Someone should really copy and paste all of their little ‘exchanges’ into one big locked thread for all of us to admire.

Yeah, well…what can you do?

I have been a good friend of Oren’s since the mid 90s, ever since he was in Menstruation Sisters. As far as I last heard, he had closed the store down.
I’ve been involved in the Melbourne noise ‘scene’ since you were a pup. Makes me feel so old - I remember buying Godflesh’s ‘Streetcleaner’ when it was a new release at Metal For Melbourne. Now that’s OLD.

Grmpy, you sound like you’d be more at home listening to Warrant’s ‘Cherry Pie’ or some half baked Black Crowes styled contemporary bourboun soaked southern ‘rawk’ than anything by a laptop artist such as Fennesz.
I’m surprised you were ever talked into checking him out.
