I aim to please, Peligro aims for… not getting any on the toliet seat! [:)]
Late,
grmpysmrf
Grmpy, you sound like you’d be more at home listening to Warrant’s ‘Cherry Pie’ or some half baked Black Crowes styled contemporary bourboun soaked southern ‘rawk’ than anything by a laptop artist such as Fennesz.
I don’t care for either of those bands but I do like the intro into “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” By warrant but that’s where my care of Warrant ends.
I didn’t “hate” all of it, just that one “Song” I posted about.
Personally I don’t see what you guys see in alot of it other than the thought manipulation involved in the sound. At one point during a specific track Of endless summer I found myself thinking about a summer in Brookln in the 70’s where the urban kids would bust open a fire hydrant and play in the water… What brought that on I have no idea. I’ve never been to New York, Never lived in the ghetto, and was a toddler in the late 70’s.
So that aspect is pretty cool, just don’t think I’d call it music because as someone else posted on this subject a while back, I tend to like melody harmony and other structures that make up “song”
I’m surprised you were ever talked into checking him out
That’s kind of a dick thing to write, huh? I’d like to think I’m one of the more open minded people on the board.
In All honesty I think some of these “experimental” Artists are very “the emperor wears no clothes.”
Like it some how makes you cooler when you pretend you can understand their music when in fact there is no music. It sounds like a data cd put into a cd player… bzzzzz irk bzzzz bzzzz bromp bromp bromp bzzz irk…
What’s even more fascinating to me is that some one could try and convince me that this “musician” sat down and thought about what bzzzs and irks go where and seriously how would they know if one was out of place?
Maybe it’s cause I don’t smoke weed anymore maybe you gotta be high.

It’s not a question of being ‘better’ or measuring the size of my cock, you merely expressed an interest in the guy and I gave you a few pointers. It’s abstract music and like any kind of abstract art it’s best left open to interpretation. And I like that. It doesn’t force a story or an opinion down your throat and doesn’t treat you like an imbecile. It reveals itself over time and, yes, even takes some effort on your behalf to try and connect with the artist’s narrative or vision. It’s no pissing contest. I “banged my head” in jest because you seemed so dismissive of it after one listen.
It may sound ‘wanky’ but as someone once said of this type of music…“It allows you to create landscapes in your mind”.
And ‘Emperor’s New Clothes’…oh come on. How juvenile. That’s the kind of thing I’d expect from an MTV radio shock jock. It comes across as boorish and ignorant. Music isn’t all ego and catchy choruses and ear splitting guitar solos…nor is it always about discernible melody. If your initial impressions of abstract soundscape artists amounts to little more than “Oooh look at me I’m super intellectual because I’m making a beeping noise” than I suggest maybe you stick to Aerosmith,
dude.
No offense but…
you merely expressed an interest in the guy and I gave you a few pointers.
I don’t know about pointers but you certainly gave a nice suggestion as to where to start with him and I can certainly see why you compared it (if but loosely) to the silver Album. I got alot of “happy lonliness” out of it
I didn’t dismiss Endless summer, I really meant the coming of age summer lake remark… that’s what it made me think of. for the most part the only “Song” I couldn’t get into and I thought was a complete waste was the one I mentioned… I just kept waiting for the voice to come on and tell me that this track was a test of the emergency boradcast system and only a test and in the event of a real emergency…
As far as you calling it “abstract art” I’m comfortable with that label. While music is art, not all art is music. I think Fennesz and other such artists are closer to “artists” more than musicians (with the distinction made)
I understand it on an artistic label because as I said before (earlier in this thread even) I think it’s thought manipulation and that’s cool, because that’s what good art does is manipulate your thoughts, take you to places you’ve never been, have you experience things that you’ve never thought or felt.
I just don’t think it’s anything to gush over, and I certainly wouldn’t call it music. I’ll give you art (Only because you do get some pretty vivid images based on series of beeps) but you’re still gonna have a hard sell trying to convince me it’s music.
I see Broadrick meshing this type of art with music, because while there are certainly big airy noises, white noise and what not there is also melody that you can pick up within his sound textures.
it’s fantastic because while you have the noise manipulation you have a melody that compliments the noise some times it’s beautiful like Silver and Conqueror and other times it’s a gigantic box of FAIL (see s/t)
It’s abstract music and like any kind of abstract art it’s best left open to interpretation. And I like that. It doesn’t force a story or an opinion down your throat and doesn’t treat you like an imbecile.
Can’t blame you for that. aint nothing wrong with that. I completely understand why that appeals to you. But can’t you get the same thing from a classical composer? hell even Yanni or philip glass doesn’t force a story or an opinion.
someone once said of this type of music…“It allows you to create landscapes in your mind”.
DIdn’t I say that about Silver and Pink Anvil? I wasn’t kidding either about Pink anvil and endless summer. Pink ANvil seems so thin compared to Endless Summer. I got more vivid visuals based on endless than I did Pink.
And ‘Emperor’s New Clothes’…oh come on. How juvenile. That’s the kind of thing I’d expect from an MTV radio shock jock…
I said that because I thought that you were trying to make more out of it than you were. You introduce it as art, ok i can handle that, but dress it up in a cd and tell me it’s music? I’m gonna call bullshit.
good talk dad! glad we had this father son time!
Late,

I’ve been involved in the Melbourne noise ‘scene’ since you were a pup. Makes me feel so old - I remember buying Godflesh’s ‘Streetcleaner’ when it was a new release at Metal For Melbourne. Now that’s OLD.
Hey Peligro, sorry if I came across like a know-all or whatever recommending Metropolis records… dunno, I feel like a bit of retard recommending that given yer history. Certainly didn’t get the vibe you were annoyed, just apologising of my own accord because I hate people who point out the obvious… which is what I did.
Fuck, my mother raised me well.
Do you go to many noise gigs? I reckon there’s a good chance we’ve seen each other at these gigs… I go all the time, and see all the ‘regulars’, but never bother saying hello. That is because I’m a misanthrophe who listens to black metal all day whilst sponging off my parents, whilst writing letters to Varg Vikernes.
JOKE.
But yeah, it’s cool that you know Oren. I’ve only met him once, and he’s really approachable. I’m not great at saying hello, but he was pretty cool. Were you a musician or artist by any chance? It seems that you hang around these circles a lot, you mentioned a friend of yours knowing Bar McKinnon if I recall correctly…
as for the ongoing saga that is the Chronicles of Peligro and grmpysmrf…
what was I saying just before this shit blew up all over again?
I love this forum
Do you go to many noise gigs?
Not any more. Up until about 2005 I went to loads. Last gig I went to was an Anthony Pateras gig at The Toff.
That is because I’m a misanthrophe who listens to black metal all day whilst sponging off my parents, whilst writing letters to Varg Vikernes.
You sound like me. I used to write letters to William Bennett and Peter Sotos (Whitehouse) from time to time. I even got a few replies.

He’s ok. I hung around with him for a while in the late 90s then didn’t see him for about 5 or 6 years. His wife had a baby recently so…don’t see him much anymore. He’s also busy with Sunn O))).
Were you a musician or artist by any chance? It seems that you hang around these circles a lot
Not…exactly.

Yep.

There is no saga. Nor is there shit.
I love this forum
Me too. But you’ll more than likely find me hanging out at ihatekevinrudd.com/forums.
rofl… K RUDD is not THAT bad is he?
Not that I am politically minded at all really - why do you hate him so Peligro?

I like when Neil Gaiman had the serial killers murder a Peter Sotos analog in Sandman.

You’re missing out. There’s been some fucking great noise gigs since then. Wolf Eyes, Pentemple (basically sunno))) and pals at the toff), Defektro are the first that spring to mind. I was wanting to go see Pateras’ other project this Saturday night, Pivixki, it’s the best shit he’s done in my opinion. But I have a fucking 21st. I hate being loyal.
Nice work with the replies from Sotos and Bennett. I believe one of the members of Whitehouse is playing in Collapsed Toilet Vietnam, some Melbourne noise project I haven’t bothered to check out by sheer merit of the fact I’m not really into Whitehouse.
I’ve never bothered writing a letter to anyone I admired. Sort of makes me wish I had… or had started.

Not…exactly.
Aw, c’mon. Triple R radio? PBS? I’ve got no idea what else. Um. Jet and Wolfmother’s manager? Kyle Sandiland’s wife? I give up. [mad]
Back to Oren…
it genuinely suprised me he partook in a project with Skitz Sanders, given rumblings I’ve heard regarding Sanders’ tendency to deny the holocaust, amongst other things, and the fact that Oren’s a Jew.
Then again, said rumblings were mainly picked up off youtube comments and Jamie Ludbrooke shooting his mouth off on metal forums.

I saw Wolf Eyes. I saw Pentemple. I didn’t mean that I hadn’t been to ANY gigs since 2005.
Sheesh.
Do you like Acid Mothers Temple???
Legacy Of Dissolution

Oceanic remixes

Becuase John Howard was so fantastic.

Please don’t remind me of how I missed the Acid Mother/Guru Guru show at Toff in Town in favour of a dismal game of indoor soccer, please.
In short, yes. Was it a good show? You’re just as much of a boner as me if you didn’t go.
[Please don’t remind me of how I missed the Acid Mother/Guru Guru show at Toff in Town in favour of a dismal game of indoor soccer, please.
Indoor soccer??!!
What a big sissy!
Nothing sissy about indoor soccer at all!
Dammit, I HATE it when people refer to soccer as a fags sport. No, it isn’t! Try mix it with a bunch of hooligans at a game and see how many of us are sissies! Go on, ask Chris Connelly if he pops in here next time about the Old Firm games and the fun of sectarian violence!
Indoor soccer isn’t much better! We play surrounded by brick walls (great for… um… running into?) and with a bunch of, ‘undesirables’, to put it nicely. The sort of people that those ‘indoor sports centres’ attract tend to be fucked in the head to some degree.
BUT IF YOU WANT A REAL TOUGH SPORT,
you should try,
Dammit, I HATE it when people refer to soccer as a fags sport.
I didn’t refer to it as a “fags” sport. I refered to it as a “sissy” sport…even though 90% of the top players are closet homosexuals.
Sectarianism is for sissy folk.
Celtic & Rangers are raging sissy boys.
Curling rules!
Football (or soccer) is the greatest sport ever, regardless of how many sissy boys play it. And there have been some hard men play the sport. You don’t fuck with the likes of Paul McGrath or he’ll have you for breakfast
And this guy is a living legend, possibly the greatest & coolest sports person ever:
And indoor footie is great fun (and great exercise).
The ultimate in sissy-dom.
